Interaction of vortices in superconductors with kappa close to 2^(-1/2)
Using a perturbative approach to the infinitely degenerate Bogomolnyi vortex
state for a superconductor with kappa = 2^(-1/2), T -> T_c, we calculate the
interaction of vortices in a superconductor with kappa close to 2^(-1/2). We
find, numerically and analytically, that depending on the material the
interaction potential between the vortices varies with decreasing kappa from
purely repulsive (as in a type-II superconductor) to purely attractive (as in a
type-I superconductor) in two different ways: either vortices form a bound
state and the distance between them changes gradually from infinity to zero, or
this transition occurs in a discontinuous way as a result of a competition
between minima at infinity and zero. We study the discontinuous transition
between the vortex and Meissner states caused by the non-monotonous vortex

Static intervortex forces
A point particle approximation to the classical dynamics of well separated
vortices of the abelian Higgs model is developed. A static vortex is
asymptotically identical to a solution of the linearized field theory (a
Klein-Gordon/Proca theory) in the presence of a singular point source at the
vortex centre. It is shown that this source is a composite scalar monopole and
magnetic dipole, and the respective charges are determined numerically for
various values of the coupling constant. The interaction potential of two well
separated vortices is computed by calculating the interaction Lagrangian of two
such point sources in the linear theory. The potential is used to model type II

In vivo antitrypanosomal evaluation of some medicinal plant extracts from Ogun state, Nigeria
Aqueous extracts of 5 medicinal plants comprising of the root bark of Morinda morindiodes and leaves of Tithonia diversifolia, Lippia multiflora, Ocimum gratissimum and Acalypha wilkesiana were investigated for antitrypanosomal activities in albino rats infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei. The plant extracts at 400mg/kg body weight (of rats) were administered once daily for 7 days in an established infection of 5 x 106 parasitaemia before starting treatment. There was significant reduction in parasitaemia (P< 0.05) on the 3rd day of treatment in rats treated with Morinda morindiodes, Tithonia diversifolia and Acalypha wilkesiana but parasitaemia later increased till survival time. Morinda morindiodes, a plant well known for its potents antimalarial effect, has it root bark extracts exhibiting the highest value of mean survival time (12.6+0.7) days this study. The result may probably suggest reduction in parasite virulence by Morinda morindiodes root bark extract.

A dual point description of mesoscopic superconductors
We present an analysis of the magnetic response of a mesoscopic
superconductor, i.e. a system of sizes comparable to the coherence length and
to the London penetration depth. Our approach is based on special properties of
the two dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations, satisfied at the dual point
Closed expressions for the free energy and the
magnetization of the superconductor are derived. A perturbative analysis in the
vicinity of the dual point allows us to take into account vortex interactions,
using a new scaling result for the free energy. In order to characterize the
vortex/current interactions, we study vortex configurations that are out of
thermodynamical equilibrium. Our predictions agree with the results of recent
experiments performed on mesoscopic aluminium disks.Comment: revtex, 20 pages, 9 figure
Expansion for the solutions of the Bogomolny equations on the torus
We show that the solutions of the Bogomolny equations for the Abelian Higgs
model on a two-dimensional torus, can be expanded in powers of a quantity
epsilon measuring the departure of the area from the critical area. This allows
a precise determination of the shape of the solutions for all magnetic fluxes
and arbitrary position of the Higgs field zeroes. The expansion is carried out
to 51 orders for a couple of representative cases, including the unit flux
case. We analyse the behaviour of the expansion in the limit of large areas, in
which case the solutions approach those on the plane. Our results suggest

A vortex description of the first-order phase transition in type-I superconductors
Using both analytical arguments and detailed numerical evidence we show that
the first order transition in the type-I 2D Abelian Higgs model can be
understood in terms of the statistical mechanics of vortices, which behave in
this regime as an ensemble of attractive particles. The well-known
instabilities of such ensembles are shown to be connected to the process of
phase nucleation. By characterizing the equation of state for the vortex
ensemble we show that the temperature for the onset of a clustering instability
is in qualitative agreement with the critical temperature. Below this point the
vortex ensemble collapses to a single cluster, which is a non-extensive phase,
and disappears in the absence of net topological charge. The vortex description
provides a detailed mechanism for the first order transition, which applies at
arbitrarily weak type-I and is gauge invariant unlike the usual field-theoretic

Non-Abelian, Self-Dual Chern-Simons Vortices Coupled to Gravity
In this article we consider Chern-Simons/Higgs theory coupled to
gravity in three-dimensions. It is shown that for a cylindrically symmetric
vortex both the Einstein equations and the field equations can be reduced to a
set of first-order Bogomol'nyi equations provided that we choose a specific

Vortex Interactions and Thermally Induced Crossover from Type-I to Type-II Superconductivity
We have computed the effective interaction between vortices in the
Ginzburg-Landau model from large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations, taking thermal
fluctuations of matter fields and gauge fields fully into account close to the
critical temperature. We find a change, in the form of a crossover, from
attractive to repulsive effective vortex interactions in an intermediate range
of Ginzburg-Landau parameters upon increasing
the temperature in the superconducting state. This corresponds to a thermally
induced crossover from \typeI to \typeII superconductivity around a temperature
, which we map out in the vicinity of the
metal-to-superconductor transition. In order to see this crossover, it is
essential to include amplitude fluctuations of the matter field, in addition to
phase-fluctuations and gauge-field fluctuations. We present a simple physical
picture of the crossover, and relate it to observations in \metal{Ta} and
\metal{Nb} elemental superconductors which have low-temperature values of

Ownership and control in a competitive industry
We study a differentiated product market in which an investor initially owns a controlling stake in one of two competing firms and may acquire a non-controlling or a controlling stake in a competitor, either directly using her own assets, or indirectly via the controlled firm. While industry profits are maximized within a symmetric two product monopoly, the investor attains this only in exceptional cases. Instead, she sometimes acquires a noncontrolling stake. Or she invests asymmetrically rather than pursuing a full takeover if she acquires a controlling one. On the role of the upper part of words in lexical access : evidence with masked priming
More than 100 years ago, Huey (1908) indicated that the upper part of words was more relevant for perception than the lower part. Here we examined whether mutilated words, in their upper/lower portions (e.g., , , , ), can automatically access their word units in the mental lexicon. To that end, we conducted four masked repetition priming experiments with the lexical decision task. Results showed that mutilated primes produced a sizeable masked repetition priming effect. Furthermore, the magnitude of the masked repetition priming effect was greater when the upper part of the primes was preserved than when the lower portion was preserved âthis was the case not only when the mutilated words were presented in lowercase but also when the mutilated words were presented in uppercase.
