Evaluation of the Role of Self-Efficacy as a Retention Strategy in the Implementation of a Nurse Residency Program

    Get PDF
Newly licensed graduate nurses are transitioning to practice with low self-efficacy and competency gaps leading to poor patient outcomes and low retention rates within this population of nurses. These low rates of retention create an environment in which newly licensed graduate nurses have failed or are delayed in their transition from novice to expert. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the implementation of the Vizient/AACN nurse residency program on the first-year retention rate of newly licensed graduate nurses within an organization in central Texas. The program was evaluated utilizing newly licensed graduate nurse pre- and postimplementation data related to retention rates of the organization and the Casey Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey. The study design was a quantitative approach utilizing a cross-sectional survey. A convenience sample of newly licensed graduate nurses hired from November 2017 to September 2018 was used. All 48 residents enrolled in the nurse residency program were included in the study. Data were analyzed utilizing a power analysis and a paired- samples t test. The sample size was lower than 43, indicating a low confidence level. A strong correlation was noted for a standardized NRP and self-efficacy (r = .822), but there was no significant difference identified between pretest and posttest means (p \u3e .05). Retention rates improved by 11.65% following implementation of the NRP. Findings of this study can influence the development of standardized NRPs which could increase self-efficacy and reduce turnover rates among newly licensed graduate nurses

Afterschool Intervention Programsā€™ Impact Upon Select Variables Among 10th Grade Students In the Education Longitudinal Stu D Y (Els) 2002 Dataset

This researcher analyzed data from the database of the National Center for Educational Statistics: Education Longitudinal Studies (ELS) 2002. The study included responses from 743 principals in 752 schools and from 15,362 10th grade students from public, Catholic, and other private schools. The dissertation investigated if the percentage of school participation in afterschool/summer outreach programs could predict studentsā€™ perceptions of teachers, drug availability on campus, student misbehaviors and punishments, and attitudes toward school and grades. The independent variable was the percentage of students in afterschool/summer outreach programs as reported by principals. The dependent variables related to studentsā€™ responses to attitudes about teachers, if someone sold them drugs and if school and grades were important. Eight of the 10 variables were not statistically significant at p \u3c .05. The teachersā€™ praise of students was statistically significant at .009. Whether students were suspended or placed on probation was borderline significant at .057. The study revealed participation in afterschool/summer outreach programs could predict studentsā€™ attitudes toward the importance of teachers praise and could impact if students are suspended from school or placed on probation

A Pruritic Eruption Following Gastric Bypass Surgery

    Get PDF
Introduction: Prurigo pigmentosa is a rare inflammatory dermatosis characterized by pruritic erythematous papules and papulovesicles on the back, neck and chest. The cause is not well elucidated, but it has been associated with ketotic states. We present the second case of prurigo pigmentosa after gastric bypass surgery. Case: A 38 year-old African American female presented for evaluation of a rash on her neck, chest and back that initially began 2 weeks after gastric bypass surgery. It began with pruritus of the palms and small pruritic papules on her lower back. It spread to involve patchy areas of the lower back, chest, lateral neck and behind the ears. New lesions continued to appear every few days and old lesions would resolve with hyperpigmentation. On exam, indurated papules were noted in clusters behind both ears, on her right lateral neck, beneath the breasts, and in a linear band on the midline lower back. A punch biopsy showed superficial and deep lymphocytic inflammation and focal interface dermatitis. Endothelial cells were swollen, there was red cell extravasation and rare eosinophils were noted. She was started on minocycline 100 mg twice daily for two weeks. The eruption resolved and remained quiescent even after discontinuing minocycline, although she had residual hyperpigmentation. Conclusion: Prurigo pigmentosa is a rare inflammatory dermatosis that starts as crops of inflammatory lesions that undergo multiple stages. Lesions involute within a week and leave macular reticulated hyperpigmentation. It occurs more commonly in young adults, especially females. Traditionally, it had been described in the Japanese population, however recently there have been cases reported in the Middle East and Western Countries. The exact cause and pathogenesis is still unclear. However, it has been associated with ketotic states seen in dieting, diabetes mellitus, soft-drink ketosis and religious fasting. Studies have found elevated blood and urine ketones in patients with prurigo pigmentosa and noted clearance of skin lesions when ketosis resolved. There has been one prior report of prurigo pigmentosa following bariatric surgery, and we present the second. The histological features vary depending on the stage of the condition. Prurigo pigmentosa is believed to be mediated by neutrophils and patients respond well to medications that have an anti-neutrophil effect including tetracyclines and dapsone. Recurrence may occur after treatment cessation.https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/merf2019caserpt/1021/thumbnail.jp

Working together to achieve better work integrated learning outcomes: Improving productivity through better employer involvement

    Get PDF
The overarching aim of this twelve-month project, funded by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was to develop industry understanding of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) and assess the support needed by employers to better engage in WIL. Data gathered in a survey of Western Australian employers and industry focus groups prompted the establishment of a WIL Advisory Service (WAS). The service was founded by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia (CCIWA) to broker relationships between employers and universities, and provide support to improve WIL outcomes. In this study, student and employer users of WAS were asked to evaluate the support provided, to measure its success, and to assist in identifying strategies to improve WIL for all stakeholders..

Employer understanding of Work-Integrated Learning and the challenges of engaging in work placement opportunities

    Get PDF
This study examines employer understanding of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), reasons for participation and the challenges and barriers posed during the WIL process. This is important given the drive to grow WIL, augmented by the National Strategy for WIL, and the significant benefits it holds in preparing students for their transition to employment. The study was undertaken by the four publicly funded Western Australian universities, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia, and is focused on work placements among business students. Findings indicate employers had very little understanding of WIL offerings at the four Business Schools. While employers generally believed that student work placements are useful for their industry sectors, a number of issues impacted on their engagement in WIL. These included identifying suitable projects and tasks for students to complete; sourcing suitable students; concerns with student performance and capacity to mentor/supervise. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research tools were used with data gathered by an employer survey (N = 112) and focus group sessions (N = 17). The study recommends a number of ways to alleviate barriers and challenges to improve the WIL experience for all stakeholders and ensure the sustained growth of WIL in the higher education sector
