    The effect of decentralization and free trade agreements on regional disparity in a developing economy: the case of Indonesia, 1993–2005

    Since 1993, Indonesia has experienced both upward and downward restructuring of state power through the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) and fiscal decentralization, respectively. In this study, we investigate the impact of state restructuring on regional disparity. Indonesia is an interesting case because it is one of the few economies in which the upward and downward restructuring of state power occurred almost simultaneously. Based on a panel data analysis of micro-level firm data for the period 1993–2005, we find evidence of neoclassical convergence. Furthermore, decentralization was found to slow this convergence, while the AFTA had no statistically significant impact during the study period

    While the US, UK, France, Italy, and many other countries ended up implementing complete lockdown after tens of thousands of deaths from COVID-19, South Korea kept factories and offices running, flattened the curve, and maintained a low mortality rate. Extensive media coverage has focused on South Korea’s testing capacity as the primary reason, but there has been little discussion of the vital role of the smart city. In this paper, we describe how smart city technologies form a crucial part of disease control in South Korea, explain the social conditions for the extensive use of smart city technology, and offer critical insights into contemporary discussions on the issue of smart cities and surveillance

    Location Choice for Industrial Complexes in South Korea

    This chapter argues that two variables should be considered in deciding the location of an industrial hub: 1) whether the industries in the hub require heavy infrastructure; and 2) whether workers and their families need a full urban environment. The second is as important as the first because a hub without a living environment that fits the needs of the workers and their families will have trouble attracting and retaining workers. Focusing on these two variables, we propose a two-by-two matrix with four ideal types of industrial hubs. They are: 1) industrial annex of metropolis; 2) industrial town; 3) metropolitan-immersed industrial hub; and 4) new industrial city. For each of these types, a South Korean example is provided

    Geopolitics and economic geography: A commentary on Andy Pike’s geographical political economy

    The geographical political economy (GPE) proposed by Andy Pike (2020. Coping with deindustrialization in the global North and South. International Journal of Urban Sciences, 1–22. https://doi.org/10.1080/12265934.2020.1730225) and his colleagues offers room for a better understanding of the interaction between politics and industrialization of a region. In this commentary, we argue that the political dimension of GPE should be further emphasized and geopolitics should be taken more seriously. Incorporation of geopolitics can improve GPE in two ways: First, it will help GPE capture variegated pathways and institutions of regional economies, which in turn can help reduce the Anglo-American bias in GPE and economic geography. Secondly, attention to geopolitics is a way to achieve a multi-scalar understanding of the regional economy because geopolitical actions at international scale influences what happnes at national and local scales. With examples from East Asia, where the effects of geopolitics are highly visible, we claim there are at least three ways that geopolitics influence regional industrialization. First, geopolitics change the global economy, which can subsequently predispose regional industrialization; second, a superpower’s geopolitical strategy influences its international economic policy, which can afterwards predispose other nations’ regional industrialization; lastly, a national state sets a geopolitical strategy which then determines regional policy within the nation’s territory

    The structure and evolution of trade relations between countries along the Belt and Road

    Trade facilitation is one of the five main agendas of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Social network analysis has helped understand the complexity of trade networks, but existing studies tend to overlook the fact that not all bilateral trade relations are equally important to a country. To fill this gap in the literature, this paper focuses on the top 2 trade relations networks to illuminate the structure and evolution of B&R trade relations, the relative positions of different countries, and changes in the composition of trade communities (e.g., the community leaders) and the changing patterns of trade between them. We find rich dynamics over time both inter- and intra-communities. The overall international trade networks of B&R countries experienced a leadership change from Russia to China on one hand, some temporary communities experienced emergence, disappearance (e.g. the Kuwait- and Thailand-led communities) or reemergence (e.g. Poland-led community), and a community membership was generally consistent on the other hand. Since the future impacts of China’s BRI will depend on the degree of integration of the connected regions, some countries with stable and high centrality indices (e.g. Russia, Singapore, Serbia, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Poland, Hungary and Romania) could be selected by China as strategic regional partners, and countries with a strategically important geographical position but weak trade links (e.g. Myanmar, Pakistan, and Belarus) should be prioritized

    The Dropping of In-Medium Hadron Mass in Holographic QCD

    We study the baryon density dependence of the vector meson spectrum using the D4/D6 system together with the compact D4 baryon vertex. We find that the vector meson mass decreases almost linearly in density at low density for small quark mass, but saturates to a finite non-zero value for large density. We also compute the density dependence of the η\eta\prime mass and the η\eta\prime velocity. We find that in medium, our model is consistent with the GMOR relation up to a few times the normal nuclear density. We compare our hQCD predictions with predictions made based on hidden local gauge theory that is constructed to model QCD.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure

    A top-down creation of a cultural cluster for urban regeneration: The case of OCT Loft, Shenzhen

    Researchers of related topics agree that the large-scale top-down development of a creative cluster by a real estate developer may obstruct rather than facilitate creativity and creative entrepreneurialism. OCT Loft, a design industry park in Shenzhen, China, is being celebrated as an exception. Based on analyses of primary and secondary data, we find that the Loft’s success can be attributed to two factors. First, the choice of design as the target industry was appropriate. Design is a fast-growing industry and thus needs space for expansion. Second, the developer chose tenants with good reputations in the industry rather than those offering the highest rent. Both these factors are difficult to implement. First, a growing industry is hard to find in a city where urban regeneration is needed. Second, the majority of developers cannot pass up maximising rent for a good reputation as OCT did. Indeed, OCT was able to pursue the Loft’s creative success because giving a good impression to potential clients was expected to result in future opportunities that would raise profit further. In sum, a large-scale top-down development can facilitate creative entrepreneurialism but only when the developer is not hasty in demanding an immediate return on investment

    Microstructure-dependent DC set switching behaviors of Ge-Sb-Te-based phase-change random access memory devices accessed by in situ TEM

    Phase-change random access memory (PCRAM) is one of the most promising nonvolatile memory devices. However, inability to secure consistent and reliable switching operations in nanometer-scale programing volumes limits its practical use for highdensity applications. Here, we report in situ transmission electron microscopy investigation of the DC set switching of Ge-Sb-Te (GST)-based vertical PCRAM cells. We demonstrate that the microstructure of GST, particularly the passive component surrounding the dome-shaped active switching volume, plays a critical role in determining the local temperature distribution and is therefore responsible for inconsistent cell-to-cell switching behaviors. As demonstrated by a PCRAM cell with a highly crystallized GST matrix, the excessive Joule heat can cause melting and evaporation of the switching volume, resulting in device failure. The failure occurred via two-step void formation due to accelerated phase separation in the molten GST by the polaritydependent atomic migration of constituent elements. The presented real-time observations contribute to the understanding of inconsistent switching and premature failure of GST-based PCRAM cells and can guide future design of reliable PCRAM.1176Ysciescopu

    Estimating risk of C. difficile transmission from PCR positive but cytotoxin negative cases

    Background: The use of molecular methods to diagnose Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has improved diagnostic yield compared to conventional methods. However, PCR testing can detect colonization and has introduced several practical challenges pertaining to need for treatment and isolation of cases. Methods: For all new cases detected by real-time PCR, concurrent cytotoxin assay was performed and genetic characterization with MLVA (multi-locus variable number tandem repeat analysis) was done to determine relatedness. We used PCR cycle threshold (Ct) of detection as surrogate marker for bacterial burden in stool. Results: Overall, 54 cases of CDI were detected during the study period. 42 were concurrently tested by CYT and characterized by MLVA. MLVA analysis revealed marked genetic diversity with no ongoing outbreaks; four cases were due to NAP1 strain. CYT-/PCR + cases had a higher median Ct value of detection compared to CYT+/PCR + cases (28.2 vs 22.5; p = 0.01). Among 25 strains that were genetically related, 9/11 isolates in this dominant cluster were positive by CYT compared to 4/14 in non-dominant clusters (p = 0.02). Conclusion: CYT-/PCR+ cases contribute to hospital based transmission. However, the risk of transmission of C. difficile from CYT +/PCR+ cases may be higher than those that are CYT-/PCR+. © 2014 Kamboj et al
