Prompt Beta Spectroscopy as a Diagnostic for Mix in Ignited NIF Capsules
The National Ignition Facility (NIF) technology is designed to drive
deuterium-tritium (DT) internal confinement fusion (ICF) targets to ignition
using indirect radiation from laser beam energy captured in a hohlraum.
Hydrodynamical instabilities at interfaces in the ICF capsule leading to mix
between the DT fue l and the ablator shell material are of fundamental physical
interest and can affect the performance characteristics of the capsule. In this
Letter we describe new radiochemical diagnostics for mix processes in ICF
capsules with plastic or Be (0.9%Cu) ablator shells. Reactions of high-energy
tritons with shell material produce high-energy -emitters.
We show that mix between the DT fuel and the shell material enhances
high-energy prompt beta emission from these reactions by more than an order of
magnitude over that expected in the absence of mix
The Cosmological Gene Project: cluster analysis of the atmospheric fluctuations on arcmin-scale imaging of the Cosmic Microwave Background
We discuss some aspects of the Cosmological Gene Project started at the
Special Astrophysical Observatory (Russia) in 1999. The goal of the project is
to measure the anisotropy and polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background
(CMB) and investigation of atmospheric fluctuations and foreground on
arcmin-scales using the radio-telescope RATAN-600. We develop the cluster
analysis of one-dimensional random fields for the application to the RATAN-600
scans. We analyze the specific properties of peak clusterisation in the
RATAN-600 scans which to separate the primordial CMB signal from noise.Comment: Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysic
A New Model-Independent Method for Extracting Spin-Dependent Cross Section Limits from Dark Matter Searches
A new method is proposed for extracting limits on spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon
interaction cross sections from direct detection dark matter experiments. The
new method has the advantage that the limits on individual WIMP-proton and
WIMP-neutron cross sections for a given WIMP mass can be combined in a simple
way to give a model-independent limit on the properties of WIMPs scattering
from both protons and neutrons in the target nucleus. Extension of the
technique to the case of a target material consisting of several different
species of nuclei is discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 6 Encapsulated Postscript figure
Phenomenology of non-universal gaugino masses and implications for the Higgs boson decay
Grand unified theories (GUTs) can lead to non-universal gaugino masses at the
unification scale. We study the implications of such non-universal gaugino
masses for the composition of the lightest neutralino in supersymmetric (SUSY)
theories based on SU(5) gauge group. We also consider the phenomenological
implications of non-universal gaugino masses for the phenomenology of Higgs
bosons in the context of Large Hadron Collider.Comment: 4 pages, 8 eps figures, style files included, Talk at LCWS06,

Detecting an Invisibly Decaying Higgs Boson at a Hadron Supercollider
We demonstrate that an invisibly decaying Higgs boson with Standard Model
coupling strength to top--anti-top can be detected at the LHC for masses up to
about 250 GeV.Comment: 7 pages, requires phyzzx.tex and tables.tex, revised to convert
results from SSC to LHC and include additional top quark mass cases, full

Kinetic decoupling of neutralino dark matter
After neutralinos cease annihilating in the early Universe, they may still
scatter elastically from other particles in the primordial plasma. At some
point in time, however, they will eventually stop scattering. We calculate the
cross sections for neutralino elastic scattering from standard-model particles
to determine the time at which this kinetic decoupling occurs. We show that
kinetic decoupling occurs above a temperature MeV. Thereafter,
neutralinos act as collisionless cold dark matter.Comment: Replaced with revised version, new references adde
Using the acoustic peak to measure cosmological parameters
Recent measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation by the
Boomerang experiment indicate that the universe is spatially flat. Here some
simple back-of-the-envelope calculations are used to explain their result. The
main result is a simple formula for the angular scale of the acoustic peak in
terms of the standard cosmological parameters:
l=193*[1+3(1-Omega_0)/5+(1-h)/5+Omega_Lambda/35].Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Explanations have been clarifie
Model-Independent Comparison of Direct vs. Indirect Detection of Supersymmetric Dark Matter
We compare the rate for elastic scattering of neutralinos from various nuclei
with the flux of upward muons induced by energetic neutrinos from neutralino
annihilation in the Sun and Earth. We consider both scalar and axial-vector
interactions of neutralinos with nuclei. We find that the event rate in a kg of
germanium is roughly equivalent to that in a - to -m muon
detector for a neutralino with primarily scalar coupling to nuclei. For an
axially coupled neutralino, the event rate in a 50-gram hydrogen detector is
roughly the same as that in a 10- to 500-m muon detector. Expected
experimental backgrounds favor forthcoming elastic-scattering detectors for
scalar couplings while the neutrino detectors have the advantage for
axial-vector couplings.Comment: 10 pages, self-unpacking uuencoded PostScript fil
Direct Signature of Evolving Gravitational Potential from Cosmic Microwave Background
We show that time dependent gravitational potential can be directly detected
from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. The signature can be
measured by cross-correlating the CMB with the projected density field
reconstructed from the weak lensing distortions of the CMB itself. The
cross-correlation gives a signal whenever there is a time dependent
gravitational potential. This method traces dark matter directly and has a well
defined redshift distribution of the window projecting over the density
perturbations, thereby avoiding the problems plaguing other proposed
cross-correlations. We show that both MAP and Planck will be able to probe this
effect for observationally relevant curvature and cosmological constant models,
which will provide additional constraints on the cosmological parameters.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Submitted to PR
