Activity and side effects of imatinib in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors: data from a german multicenter trial
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are mesenchymal tumors that in the past were classified as leiomyosarcomas or leiomyomas not responding to standard sarcoma chemotherapy. In several phase I and II trials the efficacy and safety of imatinib was shown before the largest trial ever performed in a single sarcoma entity revealed response rates (CR/PR) of 52%. This multicenter phase II trial presented here was performed to open access to imatinib for patients with unresectable or metastastatic GIST when the EORTC 62005 trial had been closed before imatinib was approved in Germany. It was designed to follow the best clinical response and to assess the efficacy, safety and tolerability of imatinib 400 mg/d in patients with unresectable or metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor
Simvastatin pre-treatment improves survival and mitochondrial function in a 3-day fluid-resuscitated rat model of sepsis
Statins may offer protective effects in sepsis through anti-inflammatory, mitochondrial protection and other actions. We thus evaluated the effects of simvastatin on survival, organ and mitochondrial function, tissue and plasma ubiquinone levels and liver transcriptomics in a 3-day rat model of sepsis. Comparisons of rat plasma simvastatin and ubiquinone levels were made against levels sampled in blood from patients with acute lung injury (ALI) enrolled into a trial of statin therapy. Animals received simvastatin by gavage either pre- or post-induction of faecal peritonitis. Control septic animals received vehicle alone. Seventy-two-hour survival was significantly greater in statin pre-treated animals (43.7%) compared with their statin post-treated (12.5%) and control septic (25%) counterparts (P<0.05). Sepsis-induced biochemical derangements in liver and kidney improved with statin therapy, particularly when given pre-insult. Both simvastatin pre- and post-treatment prevented the fall in mitochondrial oxygen consumption in muscle fibres taken from septic animals at 24 h. This beneficial effect was paralleled by recovery of genes related to fatty acid metabolism. Simvastatin pre-treatment resulted in a significant decrease in myocardial ubiquinone. Patients with ALI had a marked variation in plasma simvastatin acid levels; however, their ubiquinone/low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ratio did not differ regardless of whether they were receiving statin or placebo. In summary, despite protective effects seen with statin treatment given both pre- and post-insult, survival benefit was only seen with pre-treatment, reflecting experiences in patient studies
Lepton Jets in (Supersymmetric) Electroweak Processes
We consider some of the recent proposals in which weak-scale dark matter is
accompanied by a GeV scale dark sector that could produce spectacular
lepton-rich events at the LHC. Since much of the collider phenomenology is only
weakly model dependent it is possible to arrive at generic predictions for the
discovery potential of future experimental searches. We concentrate on the
production of dark states through bosons and electroweak-inos at the
Tevatron or LHC, which are the cleanest channels for probing the dark sector.
We properly take into account the effects of dark radiation and dark cascades
on the formation of lepton jets. Finally, we present a concrete definition of a

A topological classification of convex bodies
The shape of homogeneous, generic, smooth convex bodies as described by the
Euclidean distance with nondegenerate critical points, measured from the center
of mass represents a rather restricted class M_C of Morse-Smale functions on
S^2. Here we show that even M_C exhibits the complexity known for general
Morse-Smale functions on S^2 by exhausting all combinatorial possibilities:
every 2-colored quadrangulation of the sphere is isomorphic to a suitably
represented Morse-Smale complex associated with a function in M_C (and vice
versa). We prove our claim by an inductive algorithm, starting from the path
graph P_2 and generating convex bodies corresponding to quadrangulations with
increasing number of vertices by performing each combinatorially possible
vertex splitting by a convexity-preserving local manipulation of the surface.
Since convex bodies carrying Morse-Smale complexes isomorphic to P_2 exist,
this algorithm not only proves our claim but also generalizes the known
classification scheme in [36]. Our expansion algorithm is essentially the dual
procedure to the algorithm presented by Edelsbrunner et al. in [21], producing
a hierarchy of increasingly coarse Morse-Smale complexes. We point out

Social representations and the politics of participation
Recent work has called for the integration of different perspectives into the field of political psychology (Haste, 2012). This chapter suggests that one possible direction that such efforts can take is studying the role that social representations theory (SRT) can play in understanding political participation and social change. Social representations are systems of common-sense knowledge and social practice; they provide the lens through which to view and create social and political realities, mediate people's relations with these sociopolitical worlds and defend cultural and political identities. Social representations are therefore key for conceptualising participation as the activity that locates individuals and social groups in their sociopolitical world. Political participation is generally seen as conditional to membership of sociopolitical groups and therefore is often linked to citizenship. To be a citizen of a society or a member of any social group one has to participate as such. Often political participation is defined as the ability to communicate one's views to the political elite or to the political establishment (Uhlaner, 2001), or simply explicit involvement in politics and electoral processes (Milbrath, 1965). However, following scholars on ideology (Eagleton, 1991; Thompson, 1990) and social knowledge (Jovchelovitch, 2007), we extend our understanding of political participation to all social relations and also develop a more agentic model where individuals and groups construct, develop and resist their own views, ideas and beliefs. We thus adopt a broader approach to participation in comparison to other political-psychological approaches, such as personality approaches (e.g. Mondak and Halperin, 2008) and cognitive approaches or, more recently, neuropsychological approaches (Hatemi and McDermott, 2012). We move away from a focus on the individual's political behaviour and its antecedents and outline an approach that focuses on the interaction between psychological and political phenomena (Deutsch and Kinnvall, 2002) through examining the politics of social knowledge
Exploring New Physics in the C7-C7' plane
The Wilson coefficient C7 governing the radiative electromagnetic decays of B
meson has been calculated to a very high accuracy in the Standard Model, but
experimental bounds on either the magnitude or the sign of C7 are often
model-dependent. In the present paper, we attempt at constraining both the
magnitude and sign of C7 using a systematic approach. We consider already
measured observables like the branching ratios of B \rightarrow Xs mu+ mu- and
B \rightarrow Xs gamma, the isospin and CP asymmetries in B \rightarrow K*
gamma, as well as AFB and FL in B \rightarrow K*l+l-. We also discuss the
transverse observable AT2 which, once measured, may help to disentangle some of
the scenarios considered. We explore the constraints on C7, C9, C10 as well as
their chirality-flipped counterparts. Within our framework, we find that we
need to extend the constraints up to 1.6 sigma to allow for the "flipped-sign
solution" of C7. The SM solution for C7 exhibits a very mild tension if New
Physics is allowed in dipole operators only. We provide semi-numerical
expressions for all these observables as functions of the relevant Wilson

An improved observable for the forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K* l+ l- and Bs -> phi l+ l-
We study the decay B -> K* l+ l- in the QCD factorization approach and
propose a new integrated observable whose dependence on the form factors is
almost negligible, consequently the non--perturbative error is significantly
reduced and indeed its overall theoretical error is dominated by perturbative
scale uncertainties. The new observable we propose is the ratio between the
integrated forward--backward asymmetry in the [4,6] GeV^2 and [1,4] GeV^2
dilepton invariant mass bins. This new observable is particularly interesting
because, when compared to the location of the zero of the FBA spectrum, it is
experimentally easier to measure and its theoretical uncertainties are almost
as small; moreover it displays a very strong dependence on the phase of the
Wilson coefficient C_10 that is otherwise only accessible through complicated
CP violating asymmetries. We illustrate the new physics sensitivity of this
observable within the context of few extensions of the Standard Model, namely
the SM with four generations, an MSSM with non--vanishing source of flavor
changing neutral currents in the down squark sector and a Z' model with tree
level flavor changing couplings.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
Neutral Gauge Boson Contributions to the Dimuon Charge Asymmetry in B Decays
Recently, the D0 Collaboration measured the CP-violating like-sign dimuon
charge asymmetry in neutral B decays, finding a 3.2sigma difference from the
standard-model (SM) prediction. A non-SM charge asymmetry a_sl^s suggests a
new-physics (NP) contribution to Bs-Bsbar mixing. In this case, in order to
explain the measured value of a_sl^s within its 1sigma range, NP must be
present in Gamma_12^s, the absorptive part of the mixing. In this paper, we
examine whether such an explanation is possible in models with flavor-changing
Z (ZFCNC) or Z' (Z'FCNC) gauge bosons. The models must also reproduce the
measured values of the indirect CP asymmetry S_psi-phi in Bs -> J/psi phi, and
Delta Gamma_s, the Bs-Bsbar width difference. We find that the ZFCNC model
cannot reproduce the present measured values of S_psi-phi and a_sl^s within
their 1sigma ranges. On the other hand, in the Z'FCNC model, the values of all
