    Kowakare: A New Perspective on the Development of Early Mother–Offspring Relationship

    The mother–offspring relationship has components of both positivity and negativity. Kowakare is a new concept introduced to explain an adaptive function of the negativity in the early mother-offspring relationship. Kowakare is the psycho-somatic development of the relationship as the process of accumulation in the otherness of offspring. Early human Kowakare has two frameworks, biological inter-body antagonism and socio-cultural allomothering compensating the antagonism. Some features of feeding/weaning, parental aversion to offspring’s bodily products, and transition from dyad to triad relationship (proto–triad relationship) in tactile play are discussed. Early human Kowakare is promoted by allomothering with the nested systems of objects/persons/institutions as interfaces between mother and offspring. Kowakare makes mother–offspring relationship a mutually autonomous and cooperative companionship

    Habitat partitioning and vulnerability of sharks in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

    Sharks present a critical conservation challenge, but little is known about their spatial distribution and vulnerability, particularly in complex seascapes such as Australia's Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP). We review (1) the distribution of shark species among the primary habitats of the GBRMP (coral reefs, inshore/shelf, pelagic and deep-water habitats) (2) the relative exploitation of each species by fisheries, and (3) how current catch rates interact with their vulnerability and trophic index. Excluding rays and chimaeras, we identify a total of 82 shark species in the GBRMP. We find that shark research in the GBRMP has yielded little quantitative information on most species. Reef sharks are largely site-fidelic, but can move large distances and some regularly use non-reef habitats. Inshore and shelf sharks use coastal habitats either exclusively or during specific times in their life cycle (e.g. as nurseries). Virtually nothing is known about the distribution and habitat use of the GBRMP's pelagic and deep-water sharks. At least 46 species (53.5 %) are caught in one or more fisheries, but stock assessments are lacking for most. At least 17 of the sharks caught are considered highly vulnerable to exploitation. We argue that users of shark resources should be responsible for demonstrating that a fishery is sustainable before exploitation is allowed to commence or continue. This fundamental change in management principle will safeguard against stock collapses that have characterised many shark fisheries

    Effects of selenium on plant metabolism and implications for crops and consumers

    Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for many organisms including humans, while in plants it can trigger a variety of beneficial effects. Plants absorb Se mainly in the form of selenate using high affinity root sulfate transporters. Consequently, availability of sulfur (S) has a major impact on Se accumulation due to competition effects of the two oxyanions. In addition, Se has an impact on S uptake through interference with intrinsic regulatory mechanisms. Inside cells, selenate can access the sulfate assimilation pathway and influence the production of S-organic compounds that are of vital importance in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stress conditions. Selenium has been reported to mitigate stress in plants because of its capacity to induce the synthesis of S- and nitrogen (N) compounds, in addition to stimulating the activity of antioxidant enzymes and metabolites. Selenium can also alter the uptake of certain microelements like molybdenum, which functions as a cofactor for the enzyme nitrate reductase. Therefore, Se at high doses may interfere with N assimilation, causing a decrease in the level of N-compounds with structural and/or regulatory functions. Selenium interactions with multiple metabolic pathways in plants have relevant implications for plants and consumers that feed on them. Managing such interactions are useful to biofortify crops with organic forms of Se endowed with beneficial properties (selenomethionine and methylselenocysteine) and in other nutraceuticals like glucosinolates and antioxidants. Furthermore, Se at low doses may improve plant productivity or phytoremediation potential by enhancing photosynthesis and increasing the capacity of plants to tolerate stress

    Determinants of breastfeeding initiation among mothers in Sydney, Australia: findings from a birth cohort study

    Background: Breastfeeding has short-term and long-term benefits for both the infant and the mother. The objective of this study was to identify the incidence of breastfeeding initiation among women in South Western Sydney, and the factors associated with the initiation of breastfeeding. Methods: Child and Family Health Nurses recruited mother-infant dyads (n = 1035) to the Healthy Smiles Healthy Kids birth study in South Western Sydney, an ethnically and socio-economically diverse area, at the first post-natal home visit. A sample of 935 women completed a structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire at 8 weeks. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify those factors independently associated with the initiation of breastfeeding. Results: In total, 92% of women (n = 860) commenced breastfeeding in hospital. Women who completed a university degree were more likely to initiate breastfeeding compared to those who did not complete high school (AOR = 7.16, 95% CI 2.73, 18.79). Vietnamese women had lower odds of breastfeeding initiation compared to Australian born women (AOR = 0.34. 95% CI 0.13, 0.87). Women who had more than one child were less likely to breastfeed than those who had one child (AOR = 0.38, 95% CI 0.19, 0.79). Women who gave birth via a caesarean section were less likely to breastfeed their baby compared to those who had a vaginal delivery (AOR = 0.27, 95% CI 0.14, 0.52). Women who drank alcohol during pregnancy had 72% lower odds to breastfeed compared to those who did not drink alcohol during pregnancy (AOR = 0.28, 95% CI 0.11, 0.71). Women who reported that their partner preferred breastfeeding were more likely to initiate breastfeeding (AOR = 11.77, 95% CI 5.73, 24.15) and women who had chosen to breastfeed before pregnancy had more than 2.5 times the odds of breastfeeding their baby compared to those women who made their decision either during pregnancy or after labour (AOR = 2.80, 95% CI 1.31, 5.97). Conclusions: Women with lower levels of education, who consume alcohol during pregnancy, have more than one child, and make infant feeding decision after becoming pregnant, and those born in Vietnam should be targeted when implementing breastfeeding promotion programs. Further, women who deliver by caesarean section require additional breastfeeding support post-delivery and it is important to include fathers in breastfeeding related decisions and encourage them to participate in antenatal programs
