Computer Modeling of a Liquid Fuel Spray
This project was designed to find an accurate and convenient method of computing fuel spray parameters. The project centers around an experimental setup which basically fires a laser beam through a fuel spray mist. A concentric ring detector then measures energy from the scattered light.
A computer code was written which solves a governing equation to give computed values of the energy from scattered light. Comparison of the experimental energy and the computed energy tells how well the fuel parameters of the computer model matches those of the real spray of the experiment. An iteration technique then manipulates the computer model until the unknown parameters are solved for.
The computer code designed here works very well with calibration or known data. However, actual test data causes the computer code to crash. New techniques and approaches are currently being employed to salvage the code
State v. Pinkham: Erosion of Meaningful Forth Amendment Protection For Vehicle Stops In Maine?
In State v. Pinkham, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, held that a police officer\u27s stop of a motorist to inquire and advise about the motorist\u27s improper-but not illegal-lane usage did not necessarily violate the Fourth Amendment\u27s proscription against unreasonable seizures. The Pinkham decision is the first time that the Law Court has validated the stop of a moving vehicle in the absence of either a suspected violation of law or an imminent, ongoing threat to highway safety.
This Note considers whether the Law Court was correct in sustaining the police officer\u27s stop of Ronald Pinkham. After considering whether Pinkham fits into any of the established categories of legitimate vehicle stops, this Note contends that the standard promulgated in Pinkham is a departure from previous case law and substantially expands the authority of law enforcement officials to stop motorists
Regional Planning and Local Autonomy in Washington Zoning Law
The rapid urbanization of large areas of Washington call for effective land use planning and zoning. At present, regional and state land use plans are implemented, if at all, only by the grace of local zoning officials. This comment discusses the means available for adjusting the relationships between local zoning officials and extra-municipal planners so as to preserve local autonomy without destroying the effectiveness of state and regional plans. The authors conclude that the adoption of portions of the Model Land Development Code would accomplish this result
AI for Open Science: A Multi-Agent Perspective for Ethically Translating Data to Knowledge
AI for Science (AI4Science), particularly in the form of self-driving labs,
has the potential to sideline human involvement and hinder scientific discovery
within the broader community. While prior research has focused on ensuring the
responsible deployment of AI applications, enhancing security, and ensuring
interpretability, we also propose that promoting openness in AI4Science
discoveries should be carefully considered. In this paper, we introduce the
concept of AI for Open Science (AI4OS) as a multi-agent extension of AI4Science
with the core principle of maximizing open knowledge translation throughout the
scientific enterprise rather than a single organizational unit. We use the
established principles of Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) to
formalize a language around AI4OS. We then discuss three principle stages of
knowledge translation embedded in AI4Science systems and detail specific points
where openness can be applied to yield an AI4OS alternative. Lastly, we
formulate a theoretical metric to assess AI4OS with a supporting ethical
argument highlighting its importance. Our goal is that by drawing attention to
AI4OS we can ensure the natural consequence of AI4Science (e.g., self-driving
labs) is a benefit not only for its developers but for society as a whole.Comment: NeurIPS AI For Science Workshop 2023. 11 pages, 2 figure
