    Towards non-parametric fiber-specific T1T_1 relaxometry in the human brain

    Purpose: To estimate fiber-specific T1T_1 values, i.e. proxies for myelin content, in heterogeneous brain tissue. Methods: A diffusion-T1T_1 correlation experiment was carried out on an in vivo human brain using tensor-valued diffusion encoding and multiple repetition times. The acquired data was inverted using a Monte-Carlo inversion algorithm that retrieves non-parametric distributions P(D,R1)\mathcal{P}(\mathbf{D},R_1) of diffusion tensors and longitudinal relaxation rates R1=1/T1R_1 = 1/T_1. Orientation distribution functions (ODFs) of the highly anisotropic components of P(D,R1)\mathcal{P}(\mathbf{D},R_1) were defined to visualize orientation-specific diffusion-relaxation properties. Finally, Monte-Carlo density-peak clustering (MC-DPC) was performed to quantify fiber-specific features and investigate microstructural differences between white-matter fiber bundles. Results: Parameter maps corresponding to P(D,R1)\mathcal{P}(\mathbf{D},R_1)'s statistical descriptors were obtained, exhibiting the expected R1R_1 contrast between brain-tissue types. Our ODFs recovered local orientations consistent with the known anatomy and indicated possible differences in T1T_1 relaxation between major fiber bundles. These differences, confirmed by MC-DPC, were in qualitative agreement with previous model-based works but seem biased by the limitations of our current experimental setup. Conclusions: Our Monte-Carlo framework enables the non-parametric estimation of fiber-specific diffusion-T1T_1 features, thereby showing potential for characterizing developmental or pathological changes in T1T_1 within a given fiber bundle, and for investigating inter-bundle T1T_1 differences.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (MRM) on the 14th of June 202

    Addressing drinking water salinity due to sea water intrusion in Praia de Leste, Parana, by a brackish water desalination pilot plant

    Seawater intrusion into the Pombas River, source of freshwater to Praia de Leste on the coast of Parana in Brazil presents a problem to the water utility as most water treatment plants in Brazil are conventional. To find a solution to this problem, a pilot plant (1 m3 /h) consisting of ultrafiltration (UF) followed by reverse osmosis (RO) was developed and evaluated. For testing, brackish water was produced with a concentration of 1,500 ± 100 mg/L of total dissolved solids (TDS), mixing seawater and fresh water. To evaluate the water quality, TDS, electrical conductivity, pH, temperature, apparent color, turbidity, alkalinity, total hardness, calcium, chloride and sulfate were monitored. For operational performance, flowrates, osmotic pressure, filtration rate, recovery rate and mass balance were analyzed. On average, the UF system removed 96.4% of turbidity and 98.6% of apparent color; whereas the RO system removed 99.4% of TDS. The overall average recovery (UF and RO) was 45.81% with average osmotic pressure of 8.21 bar, filtration rate of 30.7 L/h/m2 in the UF system and 21.7 L/h/m2 in the RO system.     A Practical Algorithm for the Management of Superficial Folliculitis of the Scalp: 10 Years of Clinical and Dermoscopy Experience

    Introduction: Superficial folliculitis of the scalp (SFS) is a common complaint in clinical practice, and initial presentation may be difficult to differentiate as they may appear very similar to each other. Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to describe the pathologies that occur clinically as folliculitis of the scalp, identify their causes and characteristics and create a standardized classification. Methods: This is a retrospective clinical, dermoscopic and histopathological study over 10 years of dermatologic consultations. Only individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of SFS (updated diagnostic criteria or biopsy) were included. Results: In this review, we describe the various clinical features of different causes of SFS in ninety-nine cases and divided into infectious due to fungus, bacteria, or virus and inflammatory conditions such as rosacea, acneiform eruption and Ofuji syndrome. Conclusions: The clinician must differentiate SFS from other underlying scarring disorders to prevent poorer outcomes. We created an algorithm to help the clinician reach a proper diagnosis

    Patient survival after D 1 and D 2 resections for gastric cancer: long-term results of the MRC randomized surgical trial

    Controversy still exists on the optimal surgical resection for potentially curable gastric cancer. Much better long-term survival has been reported in retrospective/non-randomized studies with D 2 resections that involve a radical extended regional lymphadenectomy than with the standard D 1 resections. In this paper we report the long-term survival of patients entered into a randomized study, with follow-up to death or 3 years in 96% of patients and a median follow-up of 6.5 years. In this prospective trial D 1 resection (removal of regional perigastric nodes) was compared with D 2 resection (extended lymphadenectomy to include level 1 and 2 regional nodes).     Top Quarks as a Window to String Resonances

    We study the discovery potential of string resonances decaying to ttˉt\bar{t} final state at the LHC. We point out that top quark pair production is a promising and an advantageous channel for studying such resonances, due to their low Standard Model background and unique kinematics. We study the invariant mass distribution and angular dependence of the top pair production cross section via exchanges of string resonances. The mass ratios of these resonances and the unusual angular distribution may help identify their fundamental properties and distinguish them from other new physics. We find that string resonances for a string scale below 4 TeV can be detected via the ttˉt\bar{t} channel, either from reconstructing the ttˉt\bar{t} semi-leptonic decay or recent techniques in identifying highly boosted tops.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
