    The dynamical analog of the Kohn Anomaly image of the Fermi Surface is demonstrated for the response functions to the surface acoustic waves in Quantum Hall Systems near ν=1/2\nu = 1/2. Kinks appear in the velocity shift Deltas/sDelta s/s and attenuation coefficient Γ\Gamma.     Theory of Magneto--Acoustic Transport in Modulated Quantum Hall Systems Near ν=1/2\nu=1/2

    Motivated by the experimental results of Willett et al [Phys.Rev. Lett., {\bf 78}, 4478 (1997)] we develop a magneto-transport theory for the response of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime near Landau level filling factor ν=1/2\nu = 1/2 to the surface acoustic wave (SAW) in the presence of an added periodic density modulation. We assume there exists a Composite Fermion Fermi Surface (CF-FS) at ν=1/2\nu = 1/2, and we show that the deformation of the (CF-FS) due to the density modulation can be at the origin of the observed transport anomalies for the experimental conditions. Our analysis is carried out particularly for the non-local case which corresponds to the SAW experiments. We introduce a new model of a deformed CF-FS. The model permits us to explain anomalous features of the response of the modulated 2DEG to the SAW near ν=1/2:\nu = 1/2: namely the nonlinear wave vector dependence of the electron conductivity, the appearance of peaks in the SAW velocity shift and attenuation and the anisotropy of the effect, all of which originate from contributions to the conductivity tensor due to the regions of the CF-FS which are flattened by the applied modulation.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, the published versio

    Prevalence of malaria and geohelminth co-infection among antenatal women at the Federal Medical Centre and Specialist Hospital, Yola, Adamawa Sate, Nigeria

    Malaria and geohelminths are known to be associated with pregnancy within all age groups. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of malaria and geohelminths co-infection among pregnant women. The study was conducted on 252 pregnant women who came for antenatal visits at Federal Medical Center and Specialist Hospital within Yola metropolis from July to November 2015. Socio-demographic information of the pregnant women was collected. Capillary blood from finger prick was used for malaria screening by microscopy. Geohelminths were determined by stool examination using wet mount and formal ether concentration techniques. Malaria, geohelminths and co-infecion had 20.2%, 21.4%, and 6.3% prevalence, respectively. Those within 20-24 and 25-29year age group had high rate of coinfection of 2.4% each. The results show no association between age and coinfection p<0.05. Malaria was significant in this study at p<0.05.     Contaminant-induced immunotoxicity in harbour seals: Wildlife at risk?

    Persistent, lipophilic polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons (PHAHs) accumulate readily in the aquatic food chain and are found in high concentrations in seals and other marine mammals. Recent mass mortalities among several marine mammal populations have been attributed to infection by morbilliviruses, but a contributing role for immunotoxic PHAHs, including the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) was not ruled out. We addressed this issue by carrying out a semi-field study in which captive harbour seals were fed herring from either the relatively uncontaminated Atlantic Ocean or the contaminated Baltic Sea for 2 years. We present here an overview of results obtained during this study. An impairment of natural killer (NK) cell activity, in vitro T-lymphocyte function, antigen-specific in vitro lymphocyte proliferative responses, and in vivo delayed-type hypersensitivity and antibody responses to ovalbumin was observed in the seals fed the contaminated Baltic herring. Additional feeding studies in PVG rats using the same herring batches suggested that an effect at the level of the thymus may be responsible for changes in cellular immunity, that virus-specific immune responses may be impaired, and that perinatal exposure to environmental contaminants represents a greater immunotoxic threat than exposure as a juvenile or adult.     Suppression of natural killer cell activity in harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) fed Baltic Sea herring

    Mass mortalities among marine mammal populations in recent years have raised questions about a possible contributory role of contaminants accumulated through the marine food chain. While viruses were shown to be the primary cause of the outbreaks, an immunotoxic action by organochlorine chemicals in affected animals could not be ruled out. We carried out a 2 1/2 -year immunotoxicological experiment in which two groups of 11 harbour seals each were fed herring from either the relatively contaminated Baltic Sea or the relatively uncontaminated Atlantic Ocean. Seals in the Baltic Sea group accumulated 3-4 times higher levels of Ah-receptor-mediated 2,3,7,8-TCDD Toxic Equivalents in blubber than did their Atlantic counterparts following 2 years on the respective diets. Blood was sampled a total of 17 times during the course of the experiment for immunological evaluation, during which time the natural cytotoxic activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells isolated from seals fed Baltic Sea herring declined to a level approximately 2

    Large Nc and Chiral Dynamics

    We study the dependence on the number of colors of the leading pi pi scattering amplitude in chiral dynamics. We demonstrate the existence of a critical number of colors for and above which the low energy pi pi scattering amplitude computed from the simple sum of the current algebra and vector meson terms is crossing symmetric and unitary at leading order in a truncated and regularized 1/Nc expansion. The critical number of colors turns out to be Nc=6 and is insensitive to the explicit breaking of chiral symmetry. Below this critical value, an additional state is needed to enforce the unitarity bound; it is a broad one, most likely of "four quark" nature.Comment: RevTeX4, 6 fig., 5 page
