A preliminary study on the interaction between the parasitic barnacle Loxothylacus texanus and two of its host species, the blue crab Callinectes sapidus and the dark blue crab C. rathbunae, in the Gulf of Mexico is presented. Data were obtained from 923 crabs, 162 C. sapidus and 761 C. rathbunae, deposited in the Colección de Crustáceos, Instituto de Biologia, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), that were collected in 14 coastal lagoons and sites along the Mexican coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The distribution of L. texanus parasitizing each one of the host species, mean host size variation, distribution of number of parasite externae per host, and morphological modifications of the abdomen of the hosts are analyzed

Measuring Photosynthesis to Evaluate Photoprotection by Anthocyanins in Malosma laurina

    Get PDF
The purpose of this investigation was to observe the differences between the photosynthetic rates and photo-protection of young, red, juvenile leaves of Malosma laurina, and compare it to young, green leaves. To accomplish this, the open-system of Li-6400 XT was brought out into the field to a shrub of Malosma laurina that was flourishing and had both red and green leaves present. Then, data of fluorescence, photosynthetic rate, and conductance was taken from both red leaves and green leaves, and the photosynthetic rates were compared. Through this investigation, we were able to quantify that in young, red leaves, which had anthocyanin, the photosynthetic rate was lower when compared to the young, green leaves on the same plant

Regional determinants of the export maquiladora industry in the Northern Border states of Mexico

    Get PDF
The article focuses on the analysis of pooled labor markets in the maquiladora industry. It studies the regional factors affecting the assymetric distribution of maquiladoras in the Mexican economy. It also estimates the impact of concentration and agglommeration on the employment growth of the maquiladora industry.Localization; external economies; maquiladora

Regional impacts of remittances on the economic growth of Mexico

    Get PDF
The study relates the economic liberalization of the Mexican economy and the expansion of remittances inflows with regional economic growth in Mexico. A convergence non-linear econometric model was specified using the degree of economic openness and remittances as the conditional variables. The results showed that some regions have experienced a rapid growth of per capita remittances. However this variable does not presented a statistically significant coefficient. On the other hand, variables reflecting economic liberalization exhibited a positive effect on regional growth.International Migration; remittances; regional economic growth

Parasitization of Callinectes rathbunae and Callinectes sapidus by the Rhizocephalan Barnacle Loxothylacus texanus in Alvarado Lagoon, Veracruz, Mexico

    Get PDF
Callinectes rathbunae and CalIinectes sapidus in Alvarado Lagoon, Mexico, were sampled monthly for one year to determine the extent of parasitization by the rhizocephalan cirripede Loxothylacus texanus. Prevalence levels. host sex ratio, carapace width-weight variation, and distribution of the number of parasites among hosts were analyzed. Loxothylacus texanus was present almost exclusively in C. rathbunae with a mean prevalence of 7.58%, while less than 1% of all C. sapidus were parasitized. Callinectes rathbunae constitutes a new host record for this parasite. A study of infection revealed significant variation in prevalence and host size throughout the study period. The sex ratio of parasitized crabs differed from that of the total sample with mares being parasitized more often, and the comparison of carapace width-weight relationships revealed lower weights of parasitized crabs
