Yangian in the Twistor String
We study symmetries of the quantized open twistor string. In addition to
global PSL(4|4) symmetry, we find non-local conserved currents. The associated
non-local charges lead to Ward identities which show that these charges
annihilate the string gluon tree amplitudes, and have the same form as
symmetries of amplitudes in N=4 super conformal Yang Mills theory. We describe
how states of the open twistor string form a realization of the PSL(4|4)
Yangian superalgebra.Comment: 37 pages, 4 figure
The Grassmannian and the Twistor String: Connecting All Trees in N=4 SYM
We present a new, explicit formula for all tree-level amplitudes in N=4 super
Yang-Mills. The formula is written as a certain contour integral of the
connected prescription of Witten's twistor string, expressed in link variables.
A very simple deformation of the integrand gives directly the Grassmannian
integrand proposed by Arkani-Hamed et al. together with the explicit contour of
integration. The integral is derived by iteratively adding particles to the
Grassmannian integral, one particle at a time, and makes manifest both parity
and soft limits. The formula is shown to be related to those given by Dolan and
Goddard, and generalizes the results of earlier work for NMHV and N^2MHV to all
N^(k-2)MHV tree amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills.Comment: 26 page
More Holography from Conformal Field Theory
We extend the work of [4] to support the conjecture that any conformal field
theory with a large N expansion and a large gap in the spectrum of anomalous
dimensions has a local bulk dual. We count to O(1/N^2) the solutions to the
crossing constraints in conformal field theory for a completely general scalar
four-point function and show that, to this order, the counting matches the
number of independent interactions in a general scalar theory on Anti-de Sitter
space. We introduce parity odd conformal blocks for this purpose.Comment: 19 page
Unification of Residues and Grassmannian Dualities
The conjectured duality relating all-loop leading singularities of n-particle
N^(k-2)MHV scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM to a simple contour integral over
the Grassmannian G(k,n) makes all the symmetries of the theory manifest. Every
residue is individually Yangian invariant, but does not have a local space-time
interpretation--only a special sum over residues gives physical amplitudes. In
this paper we show that the sum over residues giving tree amplitudes can be
unified into a single algebraic variety, which we explicitly construct for all
NMHV and N^2MHV amplitudes. Remarkably, this allows the contour integral to
have a "particle interpretation" in the Grassmannian, where higher-point
amplitudes can be constructed from lower-point ones by adding one particle at a
time, with soft limits manifest. We move on to show that the connected
prescription for tree amplitudes in Witten's twistor string theory also admits
a Grassmannian particle interpretation, where the integral over the
Grassmannian localizes over the Veronese map from G(2,n) to G(k,n). These
apparently very different theories are related by a natural deformation with a
parameter t that smoothly interpolates between them. For NMHV amplitudes, we
use a simple residue theorem to prove t-independence of the result, thus
establishing a novel kind of duality between these theories.Comment: 56 pages, 11 figures; v2: typos corrected, minor improvement
General Split Helicity Gluon Tree Amplitudes in Open Twistor String Theory
We evaluate all split helicity gluon tree amplitudes in open twistor string
theory. We show that these amplitudes satisfy the BCFW recurrence relations
restricted to the split helicity case and, hence, that these amplitudes agree
with those of gauge theory. To do this we make a particular choice of the
sextic constraints in the link variables that determine the poles contributing
to the contour integral expression for the amplitudes. Using the residue
theorem to re-express this integral in terms of contributions from poles at
rational values of the link variables, which we determine, we evaluate the
amplitudes explicitly, regaining the gauge theory results of Britto et al.Comment: 30 pages, minor misprints correcte
The Yangian origin of the Grassmannian integral
In this paper we analyse formulas which reproduce different contributions to
scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory through a Grassmannian
integral. Recently their Yangian invariance has been proved directly by using
the explicit expression of the Yangian level-one generators. The specific
cyclic structure of the form integrated over the Grassmannian enters in a
crucial way in demonstrating the symmetry. Here we show that the Yangian
symmetry fixes this structure uniquely.Comment: 26 pages. v2: typos corrected, published versio
The All-Loop Integrand For Scattering Amplitudes in Planar N=4 SYM
We give an explicit recursive formula for the all L-loop integrand for
scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM in the planar limit, manifesting the full
Yangian symmetry of the theory. This generalizes the BCFW recursion relation
for tree amplitudes to all loop orders, and extends the Grassmannian duality
for leading singularities to the full amplitude. It also provides a new
physical picture for the meaning of loops, associated with canonical operations
for removing particles in a Yangian-invariant way. Loop amplitudes arise from
the "entangled" removal of pairs of particles, and are naturally presented as
an integral over lines in momentum-twistor space. As expected from manifest
Yangian-invariance, the integrand is given as a sum over non-local terms,
rather than the familiar decomposition in terms of local scalar integrals with
rational coefficients. Knowing the integrands explicitly, it is straightforward
to express them in local forms if desired; this turns out to be done most
naturally using a novel basis of chiral, tensor integrals written in
momentum-twistor space, each of which has unit leading singularities. As simple
illustrative examples, we present a number of new multi-loop results written in
local form, including the 6- and 7-point 2-loop NMHV amplitudes. Very concise
expressions are presented for all 2-loop MHV amplitudes, as well as the 5-point
3-loop MHV amplitude. The structure of the loop integrand strongly suggests
that the integrals yielding the physical amplitudes are "simple", and
determined by IR-anomalies. We briefly comment on extending these ideas to more
general planar theories.Comment: 46 pages; v2: minor changes, references adde
The partition bundle of type A_{N-1} (2, 0) theory
Six-dimensional (2, 0) theory can be defined on a large class of
six-manifolds endowed with some additional topological and geometric data (i.e.
an orientation, a spin structure, a conformal structure, and an R-symmetry
bundle with connection). We discuss the nature of the object that generalizes
the partition function of a more conventional quantum theory. This object takes
its values in a certain complex vector space, which fits together into the
total space of a complex vector bundle (the `partition bundle') as the data on
the six-manifold is varied in its infinite-dimensional parameter space. In this
context, an important role is played by the middle-dimensional intermediate
Jacobian of the six-manifold endowed with some additional data (i.e. a
symplectic structure, a quadratic form, and a complex structure). We define a
certain hermitian vector bundle over this finite-dimensional parameter space.
The partition bundle is then given by the pullback of the latter bundle by the
map from the parameter space related to the six-manifold to the parameter space
related to the intermediate Jacobian.Comment: 15 pages. Minor changes, added reference
Anomalous Dimensions of Non-Chiral Operators from AdS/CFT
Non-chiral operators with positive anomalous dimensions can have interesting
applications to supersymmetric model building. Motivated by this, we develop a
new method for obtaining the anomalous dimensions of non-chiral double-trace
operators in N=1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with weakly-coupled AdS
duals. Via the Hamiltonian formulation of AdS/CFT, we show how to directly
compute the anomalous dimension as a bound state energy in the gravity dual.
This simplifies previous approaches based on the four-point function and the
OPE. We apply our method to a class of effective AdS5 supergravity models, and
we find that the binding energy can have either sign. If such models can be UV
completed, they will provide the first calculable examples of SCFTs with
positive anomalous dimensions.Comment: 38 pages, 2 figures, refs adde
Massless particles on supergroups and AdS3 x S3 supergravity
Firstly, we study the state space of a massless particle on a supergroup with
a reparameterization invariant action. After gauge fixing the
reparameterization invariance, we compute the physical state space through the
BRST cohomology and show that the quadratic Casimir Hamiltonian becomes
diagonalizable in cohomology. We illustrate the general mechanism in detail in
the example of a supergroup target GL(1|1). The space of physical states
remains an indecomposable infinite dimensional representation of the space-time
supersymmetry algebra. Secondly, we show how the full string BRST cohomology in
the particle limit of string theory on AdS3 x S3 renders the quadratic Casimir
diagonalizable, and reduces the Hilbert space to finite dimensional
representations of the space-time supersymmetry algebra (after analytic
continuation). Our analysis provides an efficient way to calculate the
Kaluza-Klein spectrum for supergravity on AdS3 x S3. It may also be a step
towards the identification of an interesting and simpler subsector of
logarithmic supergroup conformal field theories, relevant to string theory.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure
