The Relationship Between HR Practices and Firm Performance: Examining Causal Order
Significant research attention has been devoted to examining the relationship between HR practices and firm performance, and the research support has assumed HR as the causal variable. Using data from 45 business units (with 62 data points), this study examines how measures of HR practices correlate with past, concurrent, and future operational performance measures. The results indicate that correlations with performance measures at all three times are both high and invariant, and that controlling for past or concurrent performance virtually eliminates the correlation of HR with future performance. Education: Risk Enhancing or Insurance Mechanism?
In the first chapter, I examine the returns to education for both males and females with a particular
focus on the effect of wage risk and periods of non-employment. I also account for
selection in to the labour market using a Heckman selection equation and decompose earnings
in to permanent and transitory components in an effort to understand the components
of wage risk. My results suggest that failure to account for periods of non-employment,
wage risk and selection in to the labour market when calculating returns to education leads
to biased estimates.
In the second chapter, along with my co-author, Paul Devereux, we look at the causal
effect of education on earnings uncertainty and volatility and the effect of education on
sheltering workers from the adverse effects of recessions. We use the 1973 change in compulsory
schooling law to provide exogenous variation in education. Our regression discontinuity
estimates suggest that men whose education was increased by the law subsequently
had lower earnings volatility, less pro-cyclical earnings, and were less likely to experience
real pay cuts.
In the third chapter, I analyse the role of risk, family background, cognitive and noncognitive
skills in determining college attendance. I use a structural life cycle model explicitly
capturing the decision to go to college and incorporating important features which
impact the returns to college such as savings, labour supply, human capital accumulation
and depreciation, wage risk and employment risk. It is estimated that grants, parental background,
non-cognitive skills and risk significantly impact the decision to go to college.
However, the biggest factor in determining college attendance is cognitive skills. This is
driven both by differences in returns to college conditional on cognitive skills and by the
larger psychic costs faced by those with low cognitive skills
Galactic and Extragalactic Samples of Supernova Remnants: How They Are Identified and What They Tell Us
Supernova remnants (SNRs) arise from the interaction between the ejecta of a
supernova (SN) explosion and the surrounding circumstellar and interstellar
medium. Some SNRs, mostly nearby SNRs, can be studied in great detail. However,
to understand SNRs as a whole, large samples of SNRs must be assembled and
studied. Here, we describe the radio, optical, and X-ray techniques which have
been used to identify and characterize almost 300 Galactic SNRs and more than
1200 extragalactic SNRs. We then discuss which types of SNRs are being found
and which are not. We examine the degree to which the luminosity functions,
surface-brightness distributions and multi-wavelength comparisons of the
samples can be interpreted to determine the class properties of SNRs and
describe efforts to establish the type of SN explosion associated with a SNR.
We conclude that in order to better understand the class properties of SNRs, it
is more important to study (and obtain additional data on) the SNRs in galaxies
with extant samples at multiple wavelength bands than it is to obtain samples

MHD models of Pulsar Wind Nebulae
Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe) are bubbles or relativistic plasma that form when
the pulsar wind is confined by the SNR or the ISM. Recent observations have
shown a richness of emission features that has driven a renewed interest in the
theoretical modeling of these objects. In recent years a MHD paradigm has been
developed, capable of reproducing almost all of the observed properties of
PWNe, shedding new light on many old issues. Given that PWNe are perhaps the
nearest systems where processes related to relativistic dynamics can be
investigated with high accuracy, a reliable model of their behavior is
paramount for a correct understanding of high energy astrophysics in general. I
will review the present status of MHD models: what are the key ingredients,

The Faces in Infant-Perspective Scenes Change over the First Year of Life
Mature face perception has its origins in the face experiences of infants. However, little is known about the basic statistics of faces in early visual environments. We used head cameras to capture and analyze over 72,000 infant-perspective scenes from 22 infants aged 1-11 months as they engaged in daily activities. The frequency of faces in these scenes declined markedly with age: for the youngest infants, faces were present 15 minutes in every waking hour but only 5 minutes for the oldest infants. In general, the available faces were well characterized by three properties: (1) they belonged to relatively few individuals; (2) they were close and visually large; and (3) they presented views showing both eyes. These three properties most strongly characterized the face corpora of our youngest infants and constitute environmental constraints on the early development of the visual system
Intricate macrophage-colorectal cancer cell communication in response to radiation
Both cancer and tumour-associated host cells are exposed to ionizing radiation when a tumour is subjected to radiotherapy. Macrophages frequently constitute the most abundant tumour-associated immune population, playing a role in tumour progression and response to therapy. The present work aimed to evaluate the importance of macrophage-cancer cell communication in the cellular response to radiation. To address this question, we established monocultures and indirect co-cultures of human monocyte-derived macrophages with RKO or SW1463 colorectal cancer cells, which exhibit higher and lower radiation sensitivity, respectively. Mono- and co-cultures were then irradiated with 5 cumulative doses, in a similar fractionated scheme to that used during cancer patients' treatment (2 Gy/fraction/day). Our results demonstrated that macrophages sensitize RKO to radiation-induced apoptosis, while protecting SW1463 cells. Additionally, the co-culture with macrophages increased the mRNA expression of metabolism- and survival-related genes more in SW1463 than in RKO. The presence of macrophages also upregulated glucose transporter 1 expression in irradiated SW1463, but not in RKO cells. In addition, the influence of cancer cells on the expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory macrophage markers, upon radiation exposure, was also evaluated. In the presence of RKO or SW1463, irradiated macrophages exhibit higher levels of pro-inflammatory TNF, IL6, CCL2 and CCR7, and of anti-inflammatory CCL18. However, RKO cells induce an increase of macrophage pro-inflammatory IL1B, while SW1463 cells promote higher pro-inflammatory CXCL8 and CD80, and also anti-inflammatory VCAN and IL10 levels. Thus, our data demonstrated that macrophages and cancer cells mutually influence their response to radiation. Notably, conditioned medium from irradiated co-cultures increased non-irradiated RKO cell migration and invasion and did not impact on angiogenesis in a chicken embryo chorioallantoic membrane assay. Overall, the establishment of primary human macrophage-cancer cell co-cultures revealed an intricate cell communication in response to ionizing radiation, which should be considered when developing therapies adjuvant to radiotherapy
Early influences on cardiovascular and renal development
The hypothesis that a developmental component plays a role in subsequent disease initially arose from epidemiological studies relating birth size to both risk factors for cardiovascular disease and actual cardiovascular disease prevalence in later life. The findings that small size at birth is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease have led to concerns about the effect size and the causality of the associations. However, recent studies have overcome most methodological flaws and suggested small effect sizes for these associations for the individual, but an potential important effect size on a population level. Various mechanisms underlying these associations have been hypothesized, including fetal undernutrition, genetic susceptibility and postnatal accelerated growth. The specific adverse exposures in fetal and early postnatal life leading to cardiovascular disease in adult life are not yet fully understood. Current studies suggest that both environmental and genetic factors in various periods of life may underlie the complex associations of fetal growth retardation and low birth weight with cardiovascular disease in later life. To estimate the population effect size and to identify the underlying mechanisms, well-designed epidemiological studies are needed. Incremental dialysis for preserving residual kidney function-Does one size fit all when initiating dialysis?
While many patients have substantial residual kidney function (RKF) when initiating hemodialysis (HD), most patients with end stage renal disease in the United States are initiated on 3-times per week conventional HD regimen, with little regard to RKF or patient preference. RKF is associated with many benefits including survival, volume control, solute clearance, and reduced inflammation. Several strategies have been recommended to preserve RKF after HD initiation, including an incremental approach to HD initiation. Incremental HD prescriptions are personalized to achieve adequate volume control and solute clearance with consideration to a patient's endogenous renal function. This allows the initial use of less frequent and/or shorter HD treatment sessions. Regular measurement of RKF is important because HD frequency needs to be increased as RKF inevitably declines. We narratively review the results of 12 observational cohort studies of twice-weekly compared to thrice-weekly HD. Incremental HD is associated with several benefits including preservation of RKF as well as extending the event-free life of arteriovenous fistulas and grafts. Patient survival and quality of life, however, has been variably associated with incremental HD. Serious risks must also be considered, including increased hospitalization and mortality perhaps related to fluid and electrolyte shifts after a long interdialytic interval. On the basis of the above literature review, and our clinical experience, we suggest patient characteristics which may predict favorable outcomes with an incremental approach to HD. These include substantial RKF, adequate volume control, lack of significant anemia/electrolyte imbalance, satisfactory health-related quality of life, low comorbid disease burden, and good nutritional status without evidence of hypercatabolism. Clinicians should engage patients in on-going conversations to prepare for incremental HD initiation and to ensure a smooth transition to thrice-weekly HD when needed

Analysis of the prostate cancer cell line LNCaP transcriptome using a sequencing-by-synthesis approach
BACKGROUND: High throughput sequencing-by-synthesis is an emerging technology that allows the rapid production of millions of bases of data. Although the sequence reads are short, they can readily be used for re-sequencing. By re-sequencing the mRNA products of a cell, one may rapidly discover polymorphisms and splice variants particular to that cell. RESULTS: We present the utility of massively parallel sequencing by synthesis for profiling the transcriptome of a human prostate cancer cell-line, LNCaP, that has been treated with the synthetic androgen, R1881. Through the generation of approximately 20 megabases (MB) of EST data, we detect transcription from over 10,000 gene loci, 25 previously undescribed alternative splicing events involving known exons, and over 1,500 high quality single nucleotide discrepancies with the reference human sequence. Further, we map nearly 10,000 ESTs to positions on the genome where no transcription is currently predicted to occur. We also characterize various obstacles with using sequencing by synthesis for transcriptome analysis and propose solutions to these problems. CONCLUSION: The use of high-throughput sequencing-by-synthesis methods for transcript profiling allows the specific and sensitive detection of many of a cell's transcripts, and also allows the discovery of high quality base discrepancies, and alternative splice variants.
