Thermodynamical Consistent Modeling and Analysis of Nematic Liquid Crystal Flows
The general Ericksen-Leslie system for the flow of nematic liquid crystals is
reconsidered in the non-isothermal case aiming for thermodynamically consistent
models. The non-isothermal model is then investigated analytically. A fairly
complete dynamic theory is developed by analyzing these systems as quasilinear
parabolic evolution equations in an -setting. First, the existence of
a unique, local strong solution is proved. It is then shown that this solution
extends to a global strong solution provided the initial data are close to an
equilibrium or the solution is eventually bounded in the natural norm of the
underlying state space. In these cases, the solution converges exponentially to
an equilibrium in the natural state manifold
The -boundedness of a family of integral operators on UMD Banach function spaces
We prove the -boundedness of a family of integral operators with an
operator-valued kernel on UMD Banach function spaces. This generalizes and
simplifies earlier work by Gallarati, Veraar and the author, where the
-boundedness of this family of integral operators was shown on Lebesgue
spaces. The proof is based on a characterization of -boundedness as
weighted boundedness by Rubio de Francia.Comment: 13 pages. Generalization of arXiv:1410.665
FOLFOXIRI (folinic acid, 5-fluorouracil, oxaliplatin and irinotecan) vs FOLFIRI (folinic acid, 5-fluorouracil and irinotecan) as first-line treatment in metastatic colorectal cancer (MCC): a multicentre randomised phase III trial from the Hellenic Oncology Research Group (HORG)
To compare the efficacy and toxicity of oxaliplatin (L-OHP) in combination with irinotecan (CPT-11), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin (LV) (FOLFOXIRI) vs irinotecan and 5-FU/LV (FOLFIRI) as first-line treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (MCC). A total of 283 chemotherapy-naïve patients with MCC were enrolled (FOLFIRI arm: n=146; FOLFOXIRI arm: n=137). In the FOLFOXIRI arm, CPT-11 (150 mg m−2) was given on d1, L-OHP (65 mg m−2) on d2, LV (200 mg m−2) on days 2 and 3 and 5-FU (400 mg m−2 as i.v. bolus and 600 mg m−2 as 22 h i.v. continuous infusion) on days 2 and 3. In the FOLFIRI arm, CPT-11 (180 mg m−2) was given on d1 whereas LV and 5-FU were administered in the same way as in the FOLFOXIRI regimen. Both regimens were administered every 2 weeks. There was no difference in terms of overall survival (median OS: 19.5 and 21.5 months, for FOLFIRI and FOLFOXIRI, respectively; P=0.337), median time to disease progression (FOLFIRI: 6.9 and FOLFOXIRI: 8.4 months; P=0.17), response rates (33.6 and 43% for FOLFIRI and FOLFOXIRI, respectively; P=0.168). Patients treated with FOLFOXIRI had a significantly higher incidence of alopecia (P=0.0001), diarrhoea (P=0.0001) and neurosensory toxicity (P=0.001) compared with patients treated with FOLFIRI. The present study failed to demonstrate any superiority of the FOLFOXIRI combination compared with the FOLFIRI regimen, although the observed median OS is one of the best ever reported in the literature

Blaufuss, F. Halzen, C. Kopper (Changed to add one missing author, no other changes from initial version.)The recent observation by the IceCube neutrino observatory of an astrophysical flux of neutrinos represents the "first light" in the nascent field of neutrino astronomy. The observed diffuse neutrino flux seems to suggest a much larger level of hadronic activity in the non-thermal universe than previously thought and suggests a rich discovery potential for a larger neutrino observatory. This document presents a vision for an substantial expansion of the current IceCube detector, IceCube-Gen2, including the aim of instrumenting a volume of clear glacial ice at the South Pole to deliver substantial increases in the astrophysical neutrino sample for all flavors. A detector of this size would have a rich physics program with the goal to resolve the sources of these astrophysical neutrinos, discover GZK neutrinos, and be a leading observatory in future multi-messenger astronomy programs

Probability and timing of succession or closure in family firms: a switching regression analysis of farm households in Germany
In a two-step econometric approach that corrects for selectivity bias, we analyse the determinants of the probability of succession and the timing of succession or closure in a unique sample of 233 North-German family farms. We set up the succession decision as an intertemporal optimization problem. The empirical results show that larger and more profitable farms, which are specialized in dairy production are significantly more likely to have an intra-family successor. We find that a nonagricultural education of the current manager or the successor delay succession. When the family decided to stop farming operations, nonagricultural education of the owner delays closure of the farm. Closure occurs earlier if the manager is able to lease out the land in the process of retirement. Although farm households react to incentives originating from tax and pension regulations, many important determinants of succession are beyond the control of policymakers.
The ℓ s-boundedness of a family of integral operators on UMD banach function spaces
