Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)This study reports the use of different inducing agents (olive, soybean, and used frying oils) and culture mediums [synthetic medium (SM), whey protein, and corn steep liqueur (SL)] to optimize the production of lipase by Fusarium oxysporum. A relationship among the inoculum size, presence of a fat source, fungal growth, and lipase production was evident during the fermentation. The best results were achieved when the inoculum was grown in SM or SL and the fermentation was developed in SM with frying oil as the inducing agent. The maximum activity (about 15 U/mL) was obtained after a 72 hr cultivation.18615191522Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

In this study, it was shown that the enzyme responsible for the latter process is enantioselective and enantiospecific for the biotransformation of R-(+)-limonene into R-(+)-alpha-terpineol, has an intracellular nature and acts in anaerobic conditions. Also, it was demonstrated that the biomass stored in frozen or lyophilised forms could be used for alpha-terpineol production, where the reaction rate was significantly increased in the first case. Finally, an integrated process for the co-production of lipase and a-terpineol was proposed and, although the maximal alpha-terpineol concentration (similar to 2gl(-1)) was similar to 50% lower than the conventional process (similar to 4 gl(-1)), this is an interesting methodology from an industrial point of view and encourages future research in this field. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)alpha-Terpineol is a relatively cheap and abundant aroma compound. It is widely used in food, cosmetics, and household products. Many of its monoterpene counterparts have been applied in antiproliferative assays, leading to promising results in the prevention or even treatment of cancers. However, despite its theoretic potential, no paper reports the evaluation of antiproliferative capacity of this alcohol. Thus, antioxidant potential of three monoterpenoids (carvone, perillyl alcohol, and alpha-terpineol) was measured using two methods: DPPH and ORAC. Also, the antiproliferative effect of these monoterpenoids against nine cancerous cell lines were performed and compared to limonene and doxorubicin. Results showed that all samples tested had very low antioxidant activity in the DPPH assay, but alpha-terpineol (2.72 mu mol Trolox equiv/mu mol) could be compared to commercial antioxidants in the ORAC assay. The antiproliferative results obtained encourage future in vivo studies for alpha-terpineol, since this monoterpenoid presented cytostatic effect against six cell lines, especially for breast adenocarcinoma and chronic myeloid leukemia, in a range of 181-5881 mu M.
