Experimental demonstration of multi-Gbps multi sub-bands FBMC transmission in mm-wave radio over a fiber system

The filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) modulation format is considered as a potential candidate for future wireless 5G due to its feature of high suppression for out-of-band emissions, which allows combining multiple sub-bands with very narrow band-gaps, and hence increases the overall wireless transmission capacity. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the generation of multi sub-bands FBMC signals at millimeter-wave (mm-wave) for radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. The designed multi sub-bands FBMC system consists of 5 sub-bands of 800 MHz with inter sub-band gaps of 781.25 kHz. The composite 5 sub-bands FBMC signal is generated with no band-gap between dc to the first sub-band to preserve the bandwidth of the system. Each FBMC sub-band consists of 1024 sub-carriers and is modulated with uncorrelated data sequences. The aggregate FBMC signal is carried optically by externally modulating a free running laser and is converted to millimeter waves (mm-waves) by photomixing with another free running laser at a frequency offset of 53 GHz. At the receiver, the received electrical mm-wave signal is down-converted to an intermediate frequency (IF) and then post-processed using digital signal processing (DSP) techniques. With the use of the simple recursive least square (RLS) equalizer in the DSP receiver, the achieved aggregate data rate is 8 Gbps and 12 Gbps for 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), and 64 QAM, respectively with a total bandwidth of 4.2 GHz. The system performance is evaluated by measuring error vector magnitude (EVM) and bit error rate (BER) calculations

Streaming Algorithm for Euler Characteristic Curves of Multidimensional Images

We present an efficient algorithm to compute Euler characteristic curves of gray scale images of arbitrary dimension. In various applications the Euler characteristic curve is used as a descriptor of an image. Our algorithm is the first streaming algorithm for Euler characteristic curves. The usage of streaming removes the necessity to store the entire image in RAM. Experiments show that our implementation handles terabyte scale images on commodity hardware. Due to lock-free parallelism, it scales well with the number of processor cores. Our software---CHUNKYEuler---is available as open source on Bitbucket. Additionally, we put the concept of the Euler characteristic curve in the wider context of computational topology. In particular, we explain the connection with persistence diagrams

On the value of the phenotypes in the genomic era

AbstractGenetic improvement programs around the world rely on the collection of accurate phenotypic data. These phenotypes have an inherent value that can be estimated as the contribution of an additional record to genetic gain. Here, the contribution of phenotypes to genetic gain was calculated using traditional progeny testing (PT) and 2 genomic selection (GS) strategies that, for simplicity, included either males or females in the reference population. A procedure to estimate the theoretical economic contribution of a phenotype to a breeding program is described for both GS and PT breeding programs through the increment in genetic gain per unit of increase in estimated breeding value reliability obtained when an additional phenotypic record is added. The main factors affecting the value of a phenotype were the economic value of the trait, the number of phenotypic records already available for the trait, and its heritability. Furthermore, the value of a phenotype was affected by several other factors, including the cost of establishing the breeding program and the cost of phenotyping and genotyping. The cost of achieving a reliability of 0.60 was assessed for different reference populations for GS. Genomic reference populations of more sires with small progeny group sizes (e.g., 20 equivalent daughters) had a lower cost than those reference populations with either large progeny group sizes for fewer genotyped sires, or female reference populations, unless the heritability was large and the cost of phenotyping exceeded a few hundred dollars; then, female reference populations were preferable from an economic perspective

Clasp knife in the gut: a case report

BACKGROUND: A wide range of foreign bodies has been retrieved from the gut and reported. The presentation may be in the form of complications like intestinal obstruction, perforation and formation of abscesses etc but there is no case report of a half open clasp knife being retrieved from the ileum, the patient having thrived, in spite of its presence for a period of eight months. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old administrative clerk had undergone emergency abdominal surgery eight months previously under mysterious circumstances at a remote district hospital and had recovered completely. Later the blade of a knife was accidentally detected when an X ray of the abdomen was done during a routine follow-up visit to his family physician. Surgery revealed a clasp knife in the ileum, which was retrieved. The presence of an entero-enteric fistula short circuiting the loop was the secret of his earlier survival. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our information this is the first case-report of a clasp knife in the gut and of the patient thriving in spite of its presence. We report here the dramatic sequence of events

Genetic origins of social networks in rhesus macaques

Yet the genetic basis of sociality remains unclear. Here we provide evidence that social network tendencies are heritable in a gregarious primate. The tendency for rhesus macaques, Macaca mulatta, to be tied affiliatively to others via connections mediated by their social partners - analogous to friends of friends in people - demonstrated additive genetic variance. Affiliative tendencies were predicted by genetic variation at two loci involved in serotonergic signalling, although this result did not withstand correction for multiple tests. Aggressive tendencies were also heritable and were related to reproductive output, a fitness proxy. Mechanical Systems with Symmetry, Variational Principles, and Integration Algorithms

This paper studies variational principles for mechanical systems with symmetry and their applications to integration algorithms. We recall some general features of how to reduce variational principles in the presence of a symmetry group along with general features of integration algorithms for mechanical systems. Then we describe some integration algorithms based directly on variational principles using a discretization technique of Veselov. The general idea for these variational integrators is to directly discretize Hamilton’s principle rather than the equations of motion in a way that preserves the original systems invariants, notably the symplectic form and, via a discrete version of Noether’s theorem, the momentum map. The resulting mechanical integrators are second-order accurate, implicit, symplectic-momentum algorithms. We apply these integrators to the rigid body and the double spherical pendulum to show that the techniques are competitive with existing integrators

Spectrally-efficient high-speed wireless bridge operating at 250 GHz

A photonic wireless bridge operating at 250 GHz is presented. Using a pilot tone-assisted phase noise compensation technique, a data rate of 40 Gbit/s is achieved using 16-quadrature amplitude modulation. Furthermore, the wireless bridge is also demonstrated in a wavelength division multiplexing scenario

Hmong Adults Self-Rated Oral Health: A Pilot Study

Since 1975, the Hmong refugee population in the U.S. has increased over 200%. However, little is known about their dental needs or self-rated oral health (SROH). The study aims were to: (1) describe the SROH, self-rated general health (SRGH), and use of dental/physician services; and (2) identify the factors associated with SROH among Hmong adults. A cross-sectional study design with locating sampling methodology was used. Oral health questionnaire was administered to assess SROH and SRGH, past dental and physician visits, and language preference. One hundred twenty adults aged 18–50+ were recruited and 118 had useable information. Of these, 49% rated their oral health as poor/fair and 30% rated their general health as poor/fair. Thirty-nine percent reported that they did not have a regular source of dental care, 46% rated their access to dental care as poor/fair, 43% visited a dentist and 66% visited a physician within the past 12 months. Bivariate analyses demonstrated that access to dental care, past dental visits, age and SRGH were significantly associated with SROH (P \u3c 0.05). Multivariate analyses demonstrated a strong association between access to dental care and good/excellent SROH. About half of Hmong adults rated their oral health and access to dental care as poor. Dental insurance, access to dental care, past preventive dental/physician visits and SRGH were associated with SROH
