    Abundance, distribution, and habitat of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) off California, 1990−2003

    Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are regularly seen off the U.S. West Coast, where they forage on jellyfish (Scyphomedusae) during summer and fall. Aerial line-transect surveys were conducted in neritic waters (<92 m depth) off central and northern California during 1990−2003, providing the first foraging population estimates for Pacific leatherback turtles. Males and females of about 1.1 to 2.1 m length were observed. Estimated abundance was linked to the Northern Oscillation Index and ranged from 12 (coefficient of variation [CV] =0.75) in 1995 to 379 (CV= 0.23) in 1990, averaging 178 (CV= 0.15). Greatest densities were found off central California, where oceanographic retention areas or upwelling shadows created favorable habitat for leatherback turtle prey. Results from independent telemetry studies have linked leatherback turtles off the U.S. West Coast to one of the two largest remaining Pacific breeding populations, at Jamursba Medi, Indonesia. Nearshore waters off California thus represent an important foraging region for the critically endangered Pacific leatherback turtle

    Relic Neutrinos and Z-Resonance Mechanism for Highest-Energy Cosmic Rays

    The origin of the highest-energy cosmic rays remains elusive. The decay of a superheavy particle (X) into an ultra-energetic neutrino which scatters from a relic (anti-)neutrino at the Z-resonance has attractive features. Given the necessary X mass of 10141510^{14\sim15} GeV, the required lifetime, 10151610^{15\sim16} y, renders model-building a serious challenge but three logical possibilities are considered: (i) X is a Higgs scalar in SU(15) belonging to high-rank representation, leading to {\it power}-enhanced lifetime; (ii) a global X quantum number has {\it exponentially}-suppressed symmetry-breaking by instantons; and (iii) with additional space dimension(s) localisation of X within the real-world brane leads to {\it gaussian} decay suppression, the most efficient of the suppression mechanisms considered.Comment: 10 page LaTeX and one postscript figure.     Prediction of LDEF ionizing radiation environment

    The Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) spacecraft flew in a 28.5 deg inclination circular orbit with an altitude in the range from 172 to 258.5 nautical miles. For this orbital altitude and inclination two components contribute most of the penetrating charge particle radiation encountered - the galactic cosmic rays and the geomagnetically trapped Van Allen protons. Where shielding is less than 1.0 g/sq cm geomagnetically trapped electrons make a significant contribution. The 'Vette' models together with the associated magnetic filed models were used to obtain the trapped electron and proton fluences. The mission proton doses were obtained from the fluence using the Burrell proton dose program. For the electron and bremsstrahlung dose we used the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) electron dose program. The predicted doses were in general agreement with those measured with on-board thermoluminescent detector (TLD) dosimeters. The NRL package of programs, Cosmic Ray Effects on MicroElectronics (CREME), was used to calculate the linear energy transfer (LET) spectrum due to galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and trapped protons for comparison with LDEF measurements

    Nonlinear coupling of continuous variables at the single quantum level

    We experimentally investigate nonlinear couplings between vibrational modes of strings of cold ions stored in linear ion traps. The nonlinearity is caused by the ions' Coulomb interaction and gives rise to a Kerr-type interaction Hamiltonian H = n_r*n_s, where n_r,n_s are phonon number operators of two interacting vibrational modes. We precisely measure the resulting oscillation frequency shift and observe a collapse and revival of the contrast in a Ramsey experiment. Implications for ion trap experiments aiming at high-fidelity quantum gate operations are discussed

    Motivated by recent experimental progress in the critical regime of high-TcT_c superconductors we show how the tricritical point in a superconductor can be derived from the Ginzburg-Landau theory as a consequence of vortex fluctuations.     Scattering from Electroweak Strings

    The scattering of a charged fermion from an electroweak string is studied. Owing to an amplification of the wave function at the core radius, the cross sections for helicity flip processes can be largely enhanced. For 0<sin2θw<1/20 <\sin^2 \theta_w < 1/2 (where θw\theta_w is the Weinberg angle), ωkme\omega \sim k \sim m_e and kR1kR \ll 1, we show that the helicity flip differential cross section for electrons is of the order me1m_e^{-1} and is independent of angle. We compare our results with those obtained in calculations of rates for baryon number violating processes in the core of a cosmic string. In that case, while the enhancement is a general phenomenon, its actual magnitude is extremely sensitive to the fractional flux carried by the string core. Apart from showing the existence of a similar enhancement effect for non-topological strings, our results indicate that in some models the magnitude of enhancement can be rendered much less sensitive to the value of the parameters in the theories.
