Deciphering the Atmospheric Composition of WASP-12b: A Comprehensive Analysis of its Dayside Emission
WASP-12b was the first planet reported to have a carbon-to-oxygen ratio (C/O)
greater than one in its dayside atmosphere. However, recent work to further
characterize its atmosphere and confirm its composition has led to incompatible
measurements and divergent conclusions. Additionally, the recent discovery of
stellar binary companions ~1" from WASP-12 further complicates the analyses and
subsequent interpretations. We present a uniform analysis of all available
Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope secondary-eclipse data, including
previously-unpublished Spitzer measurements at 3.6 and 4.5 microns. The primary
controversy in the literature has centered on the value and interpretation of
the eclipse depth at 4.5 microns. Our new measurements and analyses confirm the
shallow eclipse depth in this channel, as first reported by Campo and
collaborators and used by Madhusudhan and collaborators to infer a carbon-rich
composition. To explain WASP-12b's observed dayside emission spectrum, we
implemented several recent retrieval approaches. We find that when we exclude
absorption due to C2H2 and HCN, which are not universally considered in the
literature, our models require implausibly large atmospheric CO2 abundances,
regardless of the C/O. By including C2H2 and HCN in our models, we find that a
physically-plausible carbon-rich solution achieves the best fit to the
available photometric and spectroscopic data. In comparison, the best-fit
oxygen-rich models have abundances that are inconsistent with the chemical
equilibrium expectations for hydrogen-dominated atmospheres and are 670 times
less probable. Our best-fit solution is also 7.3*10^{6} times more probable

The role of demography in long-run economic growth has been subject to increasing attention.
This paper questions the received wisdom that marital birth control was absent before the
nineteenth century. Using an extensive individual-level dataset covering 270,000 births from
80,000 families we show that higher national and sector-specific real wages reduced spacing
between births in England over more than three centuries, from 1540-1850. This effect is present
among both poor and rich families and is robust to a wide range of control variables accounting
for external factors influencing a couple’s fertility such as malnutrition, climate shocks and the
disease environment
Preservice Teacher Preparation in International Contexts: A Case-Study Examination of the International Student Teacher Programs
This article examines the teacher preparation experiences of preservice teachers in six international contexts: China, Fiji, Kiribati, Mexico, Samoa, and Tonga. More specifically, it looks at the value-added components in an international teacher education program, with an emphasis on effective teaching and employability. Theoretically the study is based on Straus and Corbin’s (1998a) substantive grounded theory and Patton’s (1997) Theory of Action Framework. Verbal and non-verbal forms of feedback were identified as essential aspects of the international preservice training experience. Cultural diversity, teaching English as a second language, collaboration, and exposure to a different educational system were identified among several components as advantages to individuals who conduct their preservice teacher training in international settings.</jats:p
New Analysis Indicates No Thermal Inversion in the Atmosphere of HD 209458b
An important focus of exoplanet research is the determination of the
atmospheric temperature structure of strongly irradiated gas giant planets, or
hot Jupiters. HD 209458b is the prototypical exoplanet for atmospheric thermal
inversions, but this assertion does not take into account recently obtained
data or newer data reduction techniques. We re-examine this claim by
investigating all publicly available Spitzer Space Telescope secondary-eclipse
photometric data of HD 209458b and performing a self-consistent analysis. We
employ data reduction techniques that minimize stellar centroid variations,
apply sophisticated models to known Spitzer systematics, and account for
time-correlated noise in the data. We derive new secondary-eclipse depths of
0.119 +/- 0.007%, 0.123 +/- 0.006%, 0.134 +/- 0.035%, and 0.215 +/- 0.008% in
the 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 micron bandpasses, respectively. We feed these
results into a Bayesian atmospheric retrieval analysis and determine that it is
unnecessary to invoke a thermal inversion to explain our secondary-eclipse
depths. The data are well-fitted by a temperature model that decreases
monotonically between pressure levels of 1 and 0.01 bars. We conclude that

Scaling of losses with size and wavelength in nanoplasmonics and metamaterials
We show that, for the resonant metal-dielectric structures with
sub-wavelength confinement of light in all three dimensions, the loss cannot be
reduced significantly below the loss of the metal itself unless one operates in
the far IR and THz regions of the spectrum or below. Such high losses cannot be
compensated by introducing gain due to Purcell-induced shortening of
recombination times. The only way low loss optical metamaterials can be
engineered is with as yet unknown low loss materials with negative

Rotational covariance and light-front current matrix elements
Light-front current matrix elements for elastic scattering from hadrons with
spin~1 or greater must satisfy a nontrivial constraint associated with the
requirement of rotational covariance for the current operator. Using a model
meson as a prototype for hadronic quark models, this constraint and its
implications are studied at both low and high momentum transfers. In the
kinematic region appropriate for asymptotic QCD, helicity rules, together with
the rotational covariance condition, yield an additional relation between the

A Search for Water in the Atmosphere of HAT-P-26b Using LDSS-3C
The characterization of a physically-diverse set of transiting exoplanets is
an important and necessary step towards establishing the physical properties
linked to the production of obscuring clouds or hazes. It is those planets with
identifiable spectroscopic features that can most effectively enhance our
understanding of atmospheric chemistry and metallicity. The newly-commissioned
LDSS-3C instrument on Magellan provides enhanced sensitivity and suppressed
fringing in the red optical, thus advancing the search for the spectroscopic
signature of water in exoplanetary atmospheres from the ground. Using data
acquired by LDSS-3C and the Spitzer Space Telescope, we search for evidence of
water vapor in the transmission spectrum of the Neptune-mass planet HAT-P-26b.
Our measured spectrum is best explained by the presence of water vapor, a lack
of potassium, and either a high-metallicity, cloud-free atmosphere or a
solar-metallicity atmosphere with a cloud deck at ~10 mbar. The emergence of
multi-scale-height spectral features in our data suggests that future
observations at higher precision could break this degeneracy and reveal the
planet's atmospheric chemical abundances. We also update HAT-P-26b's transit
ephemeris, t_0 = 2455304.65218(25) BJD_TDB, and orbital period, p =
