Persistent Currents and Dissipation in Narrow Bilayer Quantum Hall Bars
Bilayer quantum Hall states support a flow of nearly dissipationless
staggered current which can only decay through collective channels. We study
the dominant finite-temperature dissipation mechanism which in narrow bars is
driven by thermal nucleation of pseudospin solitons. We find the
finite-temperature resistivity, predict the resulting staggered current-voltage
characteristics, and calculate the associated zero-temperature critical
staggered current and gate voltage.Comment: 4 pgs. REVTeX, 3 eps figure
Probing the time dependence of dark energy
A new method to investigate a possible time-dependence of the dark energy
equation of state is proposed. We apply this methodology to two of the most
recent data sets of type Ia supernova (Union2 and SDSS) and the baryon acoustic
oscillation peak at . For some combinations of these data, we show
that there is a clear departure from the standard CDM model at
intermediary redshifts, although a non-evolving dark energy component () cannot be ruled out by these data. The approach developed here may be
useful to probe a possible evolving dark energy component when applied to
upcoming observational data.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, LaTe
Biofluorescence in Catsharks (Scyliorhinidae): Fundamental description and relevance for elasmobranch visual ecology
Biofluorescence has recently been found to be widespread in marine fishes, including sharks. Catsharks, such as the Swell Shark (Cephaloscyllium ventriosum) from the eastern Pacific and the Chain Catshark (Scyliorhinus retifer) from the western Atlantic, are known to exhibit bright green fluorescence. We examined the spectral sensitivity and visual characteristics of these reclusive sharks, while also considering the fluorescent properties of their skin. Spectral absorbance of the photoreceptor cells in these sharks revealed the presence of a single visual pigment in each species. Cephaloscyllium ventriosum exhibited a maximum absorbance of 484 +/- 3 nm and an absorbance range at half maximum (lambda(1/2max)) of 440-540 nm, whereas for S. retifer maximum absorbance was 488 +/- 3 nm with the same absorbance range. Using the photoreceptor properties derived here, a "shark eye" camera was designed and developed that yielded contrast information on areas where fluorescence is anatomically distributed on the shark, as seen from other sharks' eyes of these two species. Phylogenetic investigations indicate that biofluorescence has evolved at least three times in cartilaginous fishes. The repeated evolution of biofluorescence in elasmobranchs, coupled with a visual adaptation to detect it; and evidence that biofluorescence creates greater luminosity contrast with the surrounding background, highlights the potential importance of biofluorescence in elasmobranch behavior and biology
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and European Cystic Fibrosis Society Survey of cystic fibrosis mental health care delivery
Background: Psychological morbidity in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their caregivers is common. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) and European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS) Guidelines Committee on Mental Health sought the views of CF health care professionals concerning mental health care delivery.
Methods: An online survey which focused on the current provision and barriers to mental health care was distributed to CF health care professionals.
Results: Of the 1454 respondents, many did not have a colleague trained in mental health issues and 20% had no one on their team whose primary role was focused on assessing or treating these issues. Insufficient resources and a lack of competency were reported in relation to mental health referrals. Seventy-three percent of respondents had no experience with mental health screening. Of those who did, they utilized 48 different, validated scales.
Conclusions: These data have informed the decision-making, dissemination and implementation strategies of the Mental Health Guidelines Committee sponsored by the CFF and ECFS
Macroscopic limit of a solvable dynamical model
The interaction between an ultrarelativistic particle and a linear array made
up of two-level systems (^^ ^^ AgBr" molecules) is studied by making use of
a modified version of the Coleman-Hepp Hamiltonian. Energy-exchange processes
between the particle and the molecules are properly taken into account, and the
evolution of the total system is calculated exactly both when the array is
initially in the ground state and in a thermal state. In the macroscopic limit
(), the system remains solvable and leads to interesting
connections with the Jaynes-Cummings model, that describes the interaction of a
particle with a maser. The visibility of the interference pattern produced by
the two branch waves of the particle is computed, and the conditions under
which the spin array in the limit behaves as a ^^ ^^
detector" are investigated. The behavior of the visibility yields good insights
into the issue of quantum measurements: It is found that, in the
thermodynamical limit, a superselection-rule space appears in the description
of the (macroscopic) apparatus. In general, an initial thermal state of the ^^
^^ detector" provokes a more substantial loss of quantum coherence than an
initial ground state. It is argued that a system decoheres more as the
temperature of the detector increases. The problem of ^^ ^^ imperfect
measurements" is also shortly discussed.Comment: 30 pages, report BA-TH/93-13
A tachyonic scalar field with mutually interacting components
We investigate the tachyonic cosmological potential in two
different cases of the quasi-exponential expansion of universe and discuss
various forms of interaction between the two components---matter and the
cosmological constant--- of the tachyonic scalar field, which leads to the
viable solutions of their respective energy densities. The distinction among
the interaction forms is shown to appear in the diagnostic. Further,
the role of the high- and low-redshift observations of the Hubble parameter is
discussed to determine the proportionality constants and hence the correct form
of matter--cosmological constant interaction.Comment: 14 page
An quantum approach of measurement based on the Zurek's triple model
In a close form without referring the time-dependent Hamiltonian to the total
system, a consistent approach for quantum measurement is proposed based on
Zurek's triple model of quantum decoherence [W.Zurek, Phys. Rev. D 24, 1516
(1981)]. An exactly-solvable model based on the intracavity system is dealt
with in details to demonstrate the central idea in our approach: by peeling off
one collective variable of the measuring apparatus from its many degrees of
freedom, as the pointer of the apparatus, the collective variable de-couples
with the internal environment formed by the effective internal variables, but
still interacts with the measured system to form a triple entanglement among
the measured system, the pointer and the internal environment. As another
mechanism to cause decoherence, the uncertainty of relative phase and its
many-particle amplification can be summed up to an ideal entanglement or an
Shmidt decomposition with respect to the preferred basis.Comment: 22pages,3figure
Persistent Spin Currents in Helimagnets
We demonstrate that weak external magnetic fields generate dissipationless
spin currents in the ground state of systems with spiral magnetic order. Our
conclusions are based on phenomenological considerations and on microscopic
mean-field theory calculations for an illustrative toy model. We speculate on
possible applications of this effect in spintronic devices.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, updated version as published, Journal referenc
On the Background Field Method Beyond One Loop: A manifestly covariant derivative expansion in super Yang-Mills theories
There are currently many string inspired conjectures about the structure of
the low-energy effective action for super Yang-Mills theories which require
explicit multi-loop calculations. In this paper, we develop a manifestly
covariant derivative expansion of superspace heat kernels and present a scheme
to evaluate multi-loop contributions to the effective action in the framework
of the background field method. The crucial ingredient of the construction is a
detailed analysis of the properties of the parallel displacement propagators
associated with Yang-Mills supermultiples in N-extended superspace.Comment: 32 pages, latex, 7 EPS figures. v2: references, comments added, typos
