    Regression equation for Ar3 temperature for coarse grained as-cast steels

    A regression equation for the Ar3 temperature for as-cast ferrite/pearlite steels has been obtained. At these coarse grain sizes, very little influence of grain size on the Ar3 is observed. Out of all the elements examined, C, Mn and Nb had the major influence in decreasing the Ar3. A change in cooling rate from 10 to 200K/min results in only a small decrease of around 25oC. Of particular interest is the very marked effect of Nb in reducing the Ar3, an addition of 0.03%Nb causing a decrease in the Ar3 of 55oC

    We investigate the structure of hybrid stars based on two different constructions: one is based on the Gibbs condition for phase coexistence and considers the existence of a mixed phase (MP), and the other is based on the Maxwell construction and no mixed phase is obtained. The hadron phase is described by the non-linear Walecka model (NLW) and the quark phase by the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model (NJL). We conclude that the masses and radii obtained are model dependent but not significantly different for both constructions.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 3 table

    Microscopic theories of neutrino-^{12}C reactions

    In view of the recent experiments on neutrino oscillations performed by the LSND and KARMEN collaborations as well as of future experiments, we present new theoretical results of the flux averaged 12C(νe,e)12N^{12}C(\nu_e,e^-)^{12}N and 12C(νμ,μ)12N^{12}C(\nu_{\mu},{\mu}^-)^{12}N cross sections. The approaches used are charge-exchange RPA, charge-exchange RPA among quasi-particles (QRPA) and the Shell Model. With a large-scale shell model calculation the exclusive cross sections are in nice agreement with the experimental values for both reactions. The inclusive cross section for νμ\nu_{\mu} coming from the decay-in-flight of π+\pi^+ is 15.2×1040cm215.2 \times 10^{-40} cm^2 to be compared to the experimental value of 12.4±0.3±1.8×1040cm212.4 \pm 0.3 \pm 1.8 \times 10^{-40} cm^2, while the one due to νe\nu_{e} coming from the decay-at-rest of μ+\mu^+ is 16.4×1042cm216.4 \times 10^{-42} cm^2 which agrees within experimental error bars with the measured values. The shell model prediction for the decay-in-flight neutrino cross section is reduced compared to the RPA one. This is mainly due to the different kind of correlations taken into account in the calculation of the spin modes and partially due to the shell-model configuration basis which is not large enough, as we show using arguments based on sum-rules.Comment: 17 pages, latex, 5 figure

    Fluctuations, dissipation and the dynamical Casimir effect

    Vacuum fluctuations provide a fundamental source of dissipation for systems coupled to quantum fields by radiation pressure. In the dynamical Casimir effect, accelerating neutral bodies in free space give rise to the emission of real photons while experiencing a damping force which plays the role of a radiation reaction force. Analog models where non-stationary conditions for the electromagnetic field simulate the presence of moving plates are currently under experimental investigation. A dissipative force might also appear in the case of uniform relative motion between two bodies, thus leading to a new kind of friction mechanism without mechanical contact.     Scale issues in soil moisture modelling: problems and prospects

    Soil moisture storage is an important component of the hydrological cycle and plays a key role in land-surface-atmosphere interaction. The soil-moisture storage equation in this study considers precipitation as an input and soil moisture as a residual term for runoff and evapotranspiration. A number of models have been developed to estimate soil moisture storage and the components of the soil-moisture storage equation. A detailed discussion of the impli cation of the scale of application of these models reports that it is not possible to extrapolate processes and their estimates from the small to the large scale. It is also noted that physically based models for small-scale applications are sufficiently detailed to reproduce land-surface- atmosphere interactions. On the other hand, models for large-scale applications oversimplify the processes. Recently developed physically based models for large-scale applications can only be applied to limited uses because of data restrictions and the problems associated with land surface characterization.     Gluttony, excess, and the fall of the planter class in the British Caribbean

    Food and rituals around eating are a fundamental part of human existence. They can also be heavily politicized and socially significant. In the British Caribbean, white slaveholders were renowned for their hospitality towards one another and towards white visitors. This was no simple quirk of local character. Hospitality and sociability played a crucial role in binding the white minority together. This solidarity helped a small number of whites to dominate and control the enslaved majority. By the end of the eighteenth century, British metropolitan observers had an entrenched opinion of Caribbean whites as gluttons. Travelers reported on the sumptuous meals and excessive drinking of the planter class. Abolitionists associated these features of local society with the corrupting influences of slavery. Excessive consumption and lack of self-control were seen as symptoms of white creole failure. This article explores how local cuisine and white creole eating rituals developed as part of slave societies and examines the ways in which ideas about hospitality and gluttony fed into the debates over slavery that led to the dismantling of slavery and the fall of the planter class
