A Generic Agent Organisation Framework For Autonomic Systems
Autonomic computing is being advocated as a tool for managing large, complex computing systems. Specifically, self-organisation provides a suitable approach for developing such autonomic systems by incorporating self-management and adaptation properties into large-scale distributed systems. To aid in this development, this paper details a generic problem-solving agent organisation framework that can act as a modelling and simulation platform for autonomic systems. Our framework describes a set of service-providing agents accomplishing tasks through social interactions in dynamically changing organisations. We particularly focus on the organisational structure as it can be used as the basis for the design, development and evaluation of generic algorithms for self-organisation and other approaches towards autonomic systems
Controlled release strategies for bone, cartilage, and osteochondral engineering: part I: recapitulation of native tissue healing and variables for the design of delivery systems
The potential of growth factors to stimulate tissue healing through the enhancement of cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation is undeniable. However, critical parameters on the design of adequate carriers, such as uncontrolled spatiotemporal presence of bioactive factors, inadequate release profiles, and supraphysiological dosages of growth factors, have impaired the translation of these systems onto clinical practice. This review describes the healing cascades for bone, cartilage, and osteochondral interface, highlighting the role of specific growth factors for triggering the reactions leading to tissue regeneration. Critical criteria on the design of carriersfor controlled release of bioactive factors are also reported, focusing on the need to provide a spatiotemporal control over the delivery and presentation of these molecules.The authors thank Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia for V.E.Santo's PhD grant (SFRH/BD/39486/2007). The Political Economy of US Military Spending
The causes of the dramatic rise in military spending in the post-war era have been the subject of much political and academic controversy. No extant formulation seems to provide a compelling explanation of the dynamics involved in the levels of, and rates of change in, such spending. In light of this, the authors develop a new model, based mainly on a political-business cycle argument, to account for these dynamics. The basic proposition in this model is that variations in national defense spending arise from political considerations which are related to real and desired conditions within the national economy. Applying this model to the experience of the United States 1948-1976, the authors show that it has a large measure of empirical validity. If one removes the effects of war-time mobilization, it is clear that for the United States the principal driving forces in military spending dynamics were (1) the perceived utility of such spending in stabilizing aggregate demand, (2) the political or electoral value of the perceived economic effects arising out of such spending, and (3) the pressures of institutional-constituency demands.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68958/2/10.1177_002234337901600202.pd
Performance Issues in U.S.–China Joint Ventures
Based on an in-depth study of U.S.-China joint ventures, this article offers some insights into the performance of such international business relationships. While the conventional literature treats government as an amorphous aspea of the political-legal environment, in this case government is an active participant and influence in the performance of international joint ventures (UVs). It has both a constraining and enabling effect on LJV structure, strategy, and performance. For example, limits can be placed on ownership shares of joint ventures and on prices of the output. At the same time, government can cooperate with LJVs and foreign parent companies by creating partners for foreign parent companies, acting as major customers, and improving financial performance by lowering taxes
The Generationing of Power: A Comparison of Child-Parent and Sibling Relations in Scotland
The paper concentrates on an exploration of power relations within families. The paper discusses parental power in relation to legitimacy, household resources and children’s anticipated reactions of adult discipline. The nature of sibling power is highlighted before exploring the reciprocal expectations of sibling and child-parent interactions. The paper ends by suggesting that the generationing of power relations can lead to differing degrees of backstage and frontstage performances within the home

Near-surface moisture and biomass influences on the reliability of aerial radiometric surveys as a measure of natural radioelement concentrations
Significant differences in aerial radiometric system calibration constants in humid-forested (Portland quadrangle) and desert (Lake Mead test strip) regions indicated the probability of substantial gamma-ray absorption by soil moisture in humid areas. A set of test quadrangles was selected to investigate relationships among a group of environmental variables and ratios of whole-quadrangle mean (X) stream sediment uranium (U) and thorium (Th) contents to corresponding mean aerial radiometric uranium and thorium measurements. It was assumed that stream sediment values might be sufficiently representative of the average surface radioelement concentrations to be used in ground-calibrating the aerial systems. Preliminary testing established strong statistical correlations between the radioelement ratios and moisture and biomass variables. However, it is recognized that moisture and biomass relationships represent a variety of variables affecting the aerial gamma-ray measurements, such as soil formation, including weathering effects. Also, the data suggested that in certain very humid areas placering effects caused the mean thorium and uranium content of stream sediments to be much greater than actual concentrations in the average surface rocks. These effects appeared to be minimal in the arid regions, where the stream sediment data were more representative of the surface materials in general. These observations prompted a follow-up study using surface-to-aerial ratios based on analyses of surface samples in humid regions and including the stream sediment-to-aerial data ratios only for the relatively arid areas. Multiple linear regression analyses of the data indicated two-variable models would provide reasonable correction factors for aerial data obtained in humid environments
