    Theory of ac electrokinetic behavior of spheroidal cell suspensions with an intrinsic dispersion

    The dielectric dispersion, dielectrophoretic (DEP) and electrorotational (ER) spectra of spheroidal biological cell suspensions with an intrinsic dispersion in the constituent dielectric constants are investigated. By means of the spectral representation method, we express analytically the characteristic frequencies and dispersion strengths both for the effective dielectric constant and the Clausius-Mossotti factor (CMF). We identify four and six characteristic frequencies for the effective dielectric spectra and CMF respectively, all of them being dependent on the depolarization factor (or the cell shape). The analytical results allow us to examine the effects of the cell shape, the dispersion strength and the intrinsic frequency on the dielectric dispersion, DEP and ER spectra. Furthermore, we include the local-field effects due to the mutual interactions between cells in a dense suspension, and study the dependence of co-field or anti-field dispersion peaks on the volume fractions.Comment: accepted by Phys.     Impact of CIR Storms on Thermosphere Density Variability during the Solar Minimum of 2008

    The solar minimum of 2008 was exceptionally quiet, with sunspot numbers at their lowest in 75 years. During this unique solar minimum epoch, however, solar wind high - speed streams emanating from near-equatorial coronal holes occurred frequently and were the primary contributor to the recurrent geomagnetic activity at Earth. These conditions enabled the isolation of forcing by geomagnetic activity on the preconditioned solar minimum state of the upper atmosphere caused by Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs). Thermosphere density observations around 400 km from the CHAMP satellite are used to study the thermosphere density response to solar wind high - speed streams/CIRs. Superposed epoch results show that thermosphere density responds to high - speed streams globally, and the density at 400 km changes by 75% on average. The relative changes of neutral density are comparable at different latitudes, although its variability is largest at high latitudes. In addition, the response of thermosphere density to high - speed streams is larger at night than in daytime, indicating the preconditioning effect of the thermosphere response to storms. Finally, the thermosphere density variations at the periods of 9 and 13.5 days associated with CIRs are linked to the spatial distribution of low - middle latitude coronal holes on the basis of the EUVI observations from the STEREO.Comment: Solar Physics, accepted, April 2010, and the final version of this paper will appear in the website of Solar Physics soon

    Phase transitions and noise crosscorrelations in a model of directed polymers in a disordered medium

    We show that effective interactions mediated by disorder between two directed polymers can be modelled as the crosscorrelation of noises in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equations satisfied by the respective free energies of these polymers. When there are two polymers, disorder introduces attractive interactions between them. We analyze the phase diagram in details and show that these interactions lead to new phases in the phase diagram. We show that, even in dimension d=1d=1, the two directed polymers see the attraction only if the strength of the disorder potential exceeds a threshold value. We extend our calculations to show that if there are mm polymers in the system then mm-body interactions are generated in the disorder averaged effective free energy.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.     Dielectrophoresis of charged colloidal suspensions

    We present a theoretical study of dielectrophoretic (DEP) crossover spectrum of two polarizable particles under the action of a nonuniform AC electric field. For two approaching particles, the mutual polarization interaction yields a change in their respective dipole moments, and hence, in the DEP crossover spectrum. The induced polarization effects are captured by the multiple image method. Using spectral representation theory, an analytic expression for the DEP force is derived. We find that the mutual polarization effects can change the crossover frequency at which the DEP force changes sign. The results are found to be in agreement with recent experimental observation and as they go beyond the standard theory, they help to clarify the important question of the underlying polarization mechanisms

    All‐optical three‐input logic minterms generation using semiconductor optical amplifier‐based Sagnac interferometer

    All-optical three-input logic minterms are generated at 42 Gbit/s with a Sagnac interferometer by using cross-phase modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first time that high-speed logic operations with more than two inputs have been experimentally demonstrated in a Sagnac interferometer. Correct and clear temporal waveforms are successfully observed. Bit error ratios and optical signal-to-noise ratios are measured to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. As the basic units of combinational logic operations, logic minterms are promising candidates to construct reconfigurable and programmable logic functions

    A Stochastic Broadcast Pi-Calculus

    In this paper we propose a stochastic broadcast PI-calculus which can be used to model server-client based systems where synchronization is always governed by only one participant. Therefore, there is no need to determine the joint synchronization rates. We also take immediate transitions into account which is useful to model behaviors with no impact on the temporal properties of a system. Since immediate transitions may introduce non-determinism, we will show how these non-determinism can be resolved, and as result a valid CTMC will be obtained finally.     Rediscovery of the Threatened River Sharks, Glyphis garricki and G. glyphis, in Papua New Guinea

    Recent surveys of the shark and ray catches of artisanal fishers in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG) resulted in the rediscovery of the threatened river sharks, Glyphis garricki and Glyphis glyphis. These represent the first records of both species in PNG since the 1960s and 1970s and highlight the lack of studies of shark biodiversity in PNG. Two individuals of G. garricki and three individuals of G. glyphis were recorded from coastal marine waters of the Daru region of PNG in October and November 2014. The two G. garricki specimens were small individuals estimated to be 100–105 cm and ~113 cm total length (TL). The three G. glyphis specimens were all mature, one a pregnant female and two adult males. These are the first adults of G. glyphis recorded to date providing a more accurate maximum size for this species, i.e. ~260 cm TL. A single pup which was released from the pregnant female G. glyphis, was estimated to be ~65 cm TL. Anecdotal information from the fishers of pregnant females of G. glyphis containing 6 or 7 pups provides the first estimate of litter size for this species. The jaws of the pregnant female G. glyphis were retained and a detailed description of the dentition is provided, since adult dentition has not been previously documented for this species. Genetic analyses confirmed the two species cluster well within samples from these species collected in northern Australia

    ASC-dependent RIP2 Kinase Regulates Reduced PGE 2 Production in Chronic Periodontitis

    Levels of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and its processing enzyme, prostaglandin-endoperoxide-synthase-2/ cyclooxygenase-2 (PTGS2/COX-2), are elevated in actively progressing periodontal lesions, but suppressed in chronic disease. COX-2 expression is regulated through inflammatory signaling that converges on the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Emerging evidence suggests a role for the inflammatory adaptor protein, ASC/Pycard, in MAPK activation. We postulated that ASC may represent a mediator of the MAPK-mediated regulatory network of PGE2 production. Using RNAi-mediated gene slicing, we demonstrated that ASC regulates COX-2 expression and PGE2 production in THP1 monocytic cells following infection with Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg). Production of PGE2 did not require the inflammasome adaptor function of ASC, but was dependent on MAPK activation. Furthermore, the MAP kinase kinase kinase CARD domain-containing protein RIPK2 was induced by Pg in an ASC-dependent manner. Reduced ASC and RIPK2 levels were revealed by orthogonal comparison of the expression of the RIPK family in ASC-deficient THP1 cells with that in chronic periodontitis patients. We show that pharmacological inhibition of RIPK2 represses PGE2 secretion, and RNAi-mediated silencing of RIPK2 leads to diminished MAPK activation and PGE2 secretion. These findings identify a novel ASC-RIPK2 axis in the generation of PGE2 that is repressed in patients diagnosed with chronic adult periodontitis

    Abstract Geant4 is a toolkit for simulating the passage of particles through matter. It includes a complete range of functionality including tracking, geometry, physics models and hits. The physics processes offered cover a comprehensive range, including electromagnetic, hadronic and optical processes, a large set of long-lived particles, materials and elements, over a wide energy range starting, in some cases, from 250 eV and extending in others to the TeV energy range. It has been designed and constructed to expose the physics models utilised, to handle complex geometries, and to enable its easy adaptation for optimal use in different sets of applications. The toolkit is the result of a worldwide collaboration of physicists and software engineers. It has been created exploiting software engineering and object-oriented technology and implemented in the C++ programming language.     Partial Wave Analysis of J/Ïˆâ†’Îł(K+K−π+π−)J/\psi \to \gamma (K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-)

    BES data on J/Ïˆâ†’Îł(K+K−π+π−)J/\psi \to \gamma (K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-) are presented. The K∗Kˉ∗K^*\bar K^* contribution peaks strongly near threshold. It is fitted with a broad 0−+0^{-+} resonance with mass M=1800±100M = 1800 \pm 100 MeV, width Γ=500±200\Gamma = 500 \pm 200 MeV. A broad 2++2^{++} resonance peaking at 2020 MeV is also required with width ∌500\sim 500 MeV. There is further evidence for a 2−+2^{-+} component peaking at 2.55 GeV. The non-K∗Kˉ∗K^*\bar K^* contribution is close to phase space; it peaks at 2.6 GeV and is very different from K∗K∗ˉK^{*}\bar{K^{*}}.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, Submitted to PL
