    Control system for a superconducting rectifier using a microcomputer

    Within the scope of a research program of superconducting rectifiers software is being developed to take care of the control of such systems. The hard-ware architecture which interferes with the in and output signals is based on a LSI-11/2 microprocessor with sufficient mass storage for data logging, console and printer. The flexibility inherent to this hardware configuration is desired for optimalisation of the rectifier concerning maximum current, power, efficiency and quench stability. The paper describes the structure of the program and the interaction between both computer hardware and software and the superconducting rectifier. However, because the reliability of computersystems is unsatisfactory an additional hardware protection system still handles the most important alarms

    Closed-cycle gas flow system for cooling of high Tc d.c. SQUID magnetometers

    A high Tc.d.c SQUID based magnetometer for magnetocardiography is currently under development at the University of Twente. Since such a magnetometer should be simple to use, the cooling of the system can be realized most practically by means of a cryocooler. A closed-cycle gas flow cooling system incorporating such a cooler has been designed, constructed and tested. The aimed resolution of the magnetometer is 0.1 pT Hz−1/2. The required operating temperature for the SQUIDs is 30 to about 77 K with a stability of 2 × 10−4 K Hz−1/2. After a cool-down time of 1–2 h, a stationary cooling power of at least 0.2 W is required. In the design, helium gas is cooled by a Leybold Heraeus RG 210 cryocooler, transported through a gas line, and subsequently passed through a heat exchanger on which SQUIDs can be installed. The lowest obtainable SQUID heat exchanger temperature is 31 ± 2 K. This can be reached in roughly 2–3 h with an optimal mass flow with respect to the cooling power of 6 × 10−6 kg s−1. At this mass flow the cooling power at the SQUID heat exchanger is 0.2 W at 42 K and roughly 1.2 W at 77 K. A temperature stability of 0.05 K was measured at a SQUID heat exchanger temperature of 54 K and a mass flow of 3 × 10kg s−5. The experience gained with this large cooling system will be used in the design of a smaller configuration cooling system, incorporating miniature Stirling cryocoolers.     Amicable pairs : a survey

    In 1750, Euler [20, 21] published an extensive paper on amicable pairs, by which he added fifty-nine new amicable pairs to the three amicable pairs known thus far. In 1972, Lee and Madachy [45] published a historical survey of amicable pairs, with a list of the 1108 amicable pairs then known. In 1995, Pedersen [48] started to create and maintain an Internet site with lists of all the known amicable pairs. The current (February 2003) number of amicable pairs in these lists exceeds four million. The purpose of this paper is to update the 1972 paper of Lee and Madachy, in order to document the developments which have led to the explosion of known amicable pairs in the past thirty years. We hope that this may stimulate research in the direction of finding a proof that the number of amicable pairs is infinite

    Superconducting and structural properties of plasma sprayed YBaCuO layers deposited on metallic substrates

    The properties of plasma sprayed Y-Ba-Cu-O coatings deposited on metallic substrates are studied. Stainless steel, nickel steels and pure nickel are used as substrate. Y-Ba-Cu-O deposited on stainless steel and nickel steel reacts with the substrate. This interaction can be suppressed by using an yttria-stabilized zirconia (YsZ) diffusion barrier. However, after heat treatment the Y-Ba-Cu-O layers on YsZ show cracks perpendicular to the surface. As a result the critical current density is very low. The best results are obtained for Y-Ba-Cu-O deposited on pure nickel; here no cracks perpendicular to the surface are observed. The critical current increases with the anneal temperature but annealing for longer than 10 h does not seem to improve the superconducting properties any further

    Cooling a low noise amplifier with a micromachined cryogenic cooler

    The sensitivity of antenna systems increases with increasing active area, but decreases at higher noise figure of the low-noise amplifier (LNA). Cooling the LNA locally results in significant improvement in the gain and in lowering the noise figure of the LNA. Micromachined Joule-Thomson (JT) coolers can provide a cryogenic environment to the LNA. They are attractive because they have no cold moving parts and can be scaled down to match the size and the power consumption of LNAs. The performance of a LNA mounted on a JT microcooler with dimensions of 60.0 × 9.5 × 0.72 mm3 is reported in this paper. The microcooler is operated with nitrogen gas and the cold-end temperature is controlled at 115 K. The measured net cooling power of the microcooler is about 43 mW when the LNA is not operating. The power dissipation of the LNA is 26 mW, with a supply voltage of 2 V. At room temperature the noise figure of the LNA is 0.83 dB and the gain lies between 17.9 and 13.1 dB, in the frequency range of 0.65 and 1.05 GHz. Upon cooling to 115 K, the noise figure drops to 0.50 dB and the increase in gain varies in the range of 0.6–1.5 d

    Multiple deficiencies of mitochondrial DNA- and nuclear-encoded subunits of respiratory NADH dehydrogenase detected with peptide- and subunit-specific antibodies in mitochondrial myopathies

    AbstractAntibodies have been raised against synthetic peptides corresponding to several computer-predicted epitopes of three mtDNA-encoded subunits, ND4, ND5 and ND6, of the human respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I). Antibodies were characterized by a sensitive immunoblotting assay using proteins from human skeletal muscle mitochondria and by immunoprecipitation of radio-labeled HeLa cell mitochondrial translation products. Only antibodies against two of six selected peptides of the ND4 subunit, i.e., the C-terminal peptide and an internal peptide close to the C-terminus, reacted in both assays with the subunit. Antibodies raised against an internal peptide close to the N-terminus of the ND5 subunit and antibodies raised against an internal epitope of the ND6 subunit also reacted in both the immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation assays. The antibodies described above and other Complex I subunit- or holoenzyme-specific antibodies were used to investigate the subunit deficiencies of the respiratory NADH dehydrogenase in the skeletal muscle of patients affected by mitochondrial myopathies associated with Complex I defects. The reduction in enzyme activity correlated in an immunoblot assay with a decrease of four mtDNA-encoded subunits of the enzyme, as well as with a decrease of other subunits of Complex I encoded in the nDNA. The present work provides the first evidence of a decrease in NADH dehydrogenase subunits encoded in the mitochondrial genome in myopathy patients

    Bathyraja scaphiops, Cuphead Skate

    The Cuphead Skate (Bathyraja scaphiops) is a medium-sized (to 117 cm total length) skate that occurs in the Southwest Atlantic from off Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). It inhabits continental and insular shelves and slopes at depths of 30?925 m. It is targeted or captured as utilized bycatch in demersal trawl fisheries, including the southern Brazil otter trawl fishery, the Patagonian scallop and hake fisheries, and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) targeted multi-species skate fishery. At the northern extent of its range in southern Brazil, it is captured in the otter trawl fishery which is intense; reductions in the population are suspected there but there are no data. In the Argentina-Uruguay Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ), this species was captured frequently in commercial trawls between 1984 and 2009. On the shelf edge off Argentina between Buenos Aires and northern Santa Cruz, this species was present in 9% of research trawls in the area trawled by the Patagonian scallop fishery in 2010. In the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), this species made up an average of 3.5% of the catch in the multi-species skate fishery between 1993 and 2013, with no clear trend in catch-per-unit-effort over that time frame. Overall, although this species is subjected to substantial fishing pressure, it has remained common in catches and it may have refuge over rough substrates that are untrawlable. Although fisheries are likely leading to some reduction in population size, the level is not suspected to approach the thresholds for a threatened assessment.     Brane/Flux Annihilation and the String Dual of a Non-Supersymmetric Field Theory

    We consider the dynamics of p anti-D3 branes inside the Klebanov-Strassler geometry, the deformed conifold with M units of RR 3-form flux around the S^3. We find that for p<<M the system relaxes to a nonsupersymmetric NS 5-brane ``giant graviton'' configuration, which is classically stable, but quantum mechanically can tunnel to a nearby supersymmetric vacuum with M-p D3 branes. This decay mode is exponentially suppressed and proceeds via the nucleation of an NS 5-brane bubble wall. We propose a dual field theory interpretation of the decay as the transition between a nonsupersymmetric ``baryonic'' branch and a supersymmetric ``mesonic'' branch of the corresponding SU(2M-p)x SU(M-p) low energy gauge theory. The NS 5-brane tunneling process also provides a simple explanation of the geometric transition by which D3-branes can dissolve into 3-form flux.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, typo correcte

    Amblyraja georgiana, Antarctic Starry Skate

    The Antarctic Starry Skate (Amblyraja georgiana) is a medium-sized (to 115 cm total length) deepwater skate that occurs in the Southeast Pacific Ocean off southern Chile, in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean off southern Argentina and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), in the Atlantic and Pacific Antarctic Oceans from South Georgia Island and the Antarctic Peninsula to the Ross Sea, and in the Indian Antarctic off the Crozet Islands. It is demersal on continental and insular slopes at depths of 20?1,255 m, and is captured as bycatch in trawl and longline fisheries, particularly those targeting Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides). There are no population size estimates for this skate, and it is not clear what the current population trend is. Although estimates of bycatch around South Georgia and the Ross Sea are comprised of a low percentage of overall estimated stock biomass, the demographic consequences are unknown and require further research. Furthermore, catch levels in other areas are unknown, and some specimens previously referred to as this species may include cryptic individuals of a yet-to-be-described species. Overall, it is not clear what level of fishing mortality this species is exposed to across its range, and further research is needed on distribution, population size and trend, and threats.     Design and fabrication of a planar three-DOFs MEMS-based manipulator

    This paper presents the design, modeling, and fabrication of a planar three-degrees-of-freedom parallel kinematic manipulator, fabricated with a simple two-mask process in conventional highly doped single-crystalline silicon (SCS) wafers (100). The manipulator’s purpose is to provide accurate and stable positioning of a small sample (10 × 20 × 0.2 μm3), e.g., within a transmission electron microscope. The manipulator design is based on the principles of exact constraint design, resulting in a high actuation-compliance combined with a relatively high suspension stiffness. A modal analysis shows that the fourth vibration mode frequency is at least a factor 11 higher than the first three actuation-related mode frequencies. The comb-drive actuators are modeled in combination with the shuttle suspensions gaining insight into the side and rotational pull-in stability conditions. The two-mask fabrication process enables high-aspect-ratio structures, combined with electrical trench insulation. Trench insulation allows structures in conventional wafers to be mechanically connected while being electrically insulated from each other. Device characterization shows high linearity of displacement wrt voltage squared over ±10 μm stroke in the x- and y-directions and ±2◦ rotation at a maximum of 50 V driving voltage. Out-of-plane displacement crosstalk due to in-plane actuation in resonance is measured to be less than 20 pm. The hysteresis in SCS, measured using white light interferometry, is shown to be extremely small
