Exposure to boat noise in the field yields minimal stress response in wild reef fish
Aquatic anthropogenic noise is on the rise, with growing concern about its impact on species that are sensitive to low-frequency sounds (e.g. most fish and invertebrates). We investigated whether the reef fish Halichoeres bivittatus living in both noisy and quiet areas had differing levels of baseline stress (measured as whole-body cortisol) and whether they would exhibit a physiological stress response when exposed to boat noise playbacks. While the playback experiments significantly increased cortisol levels in fish from our experiment compared to baseline levels, there were minimal pairwise differences across treatments and no difference in baseline stress for fish living in noisy vs. quiet areas. These results may be explained by low overall auditory sensitivity, habituation to a fairly noisy environment (due to biological sounds), or that boat noise simply may not represent an immediate threat to survival in this species. These findings contrast recent studies that have shown elevated stress responses in fishes when exposed to boat noise and highlights that inter-specific differences must be considered when evaluating potential impacts of anthropogenic noise on marine life
Multiresolution analysis of active region magnetic structure and its correlation with the Mt. Wilson classification and flaring activity
Two different multi-resolution analyses are used to decompose the structure
of active region magnetic flux into concentrations of different size scales.
Lines separating these opposite polarity regions of flux at each size scale are
found. These lines are used as a mask on a map of the magnetic field gradient
to sample the local gradient between opposite polarity regions of given scale
sizes. It is shown that the maximum, average and standard deviation of the
magnetic flux gradient for alpha, beta, beta-gamma and beta-gamma-delta active
regions increase in the order listed, and that the order is maintained over all
length-scales. This study demonstrates that, on average, the Mt. Wilson
classification encodes the notion of activity over all length-scales in the
active region, and not just those length-scales at which the strongest flux
gradients are found. Further, it is also shown that the average gradients in
the field, and the average length-scale at which they occur, also increase in
the same order. Finally, there are significant differences in the gradient
distribution, between flaring and non-flaring active regions, which are
maintained over all length-scales. It is also shown that the average gradient
content of active regions that have large flares (GOES class 'M' and above) is
larger than that for active regions containing flares of all flare sizes; this
difference is also maintained at all length-scales.Comment: Accepted for publication in Solar Physic
Control of lysozyme gene expression in differentiating HL-60 cells
We have investigated the control of lysozyme gene expression in HL-60 cells induced to differentiate into macrophage-like cells with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). Differentiation, as evidenced by cellular adherence, and morphological changes corresponded temporally to an increase in nonspecific esterase activity. The lysozyme concentration in the medium of uninduced HL-60 cells was 10 Μg/10 7 cells. increasing to a maximum of 46 Μg/10 7 cells after 48 h incubation with PMA (16 nm). At 72 h the lysozyme concentration decreased to 16 Μg/10 7 cells. Intracellular lysozyme activity remained constant throughout differentiation. If HL-60 cells were exposed to PMA for 24 h, washed, then maintained in normal medium, they differentiated normally, confirming their irreversible commitment to differentiate. The increase in lysozyme secretion by these cells, however, is markedly blunted suggesting that continued PMA treatment of differentiated cells is required for their secretion of lysozyme. There is no change in the rate of extracellular degradation of lysozyme during differentiation. The level of lysozyme mRNA does not correlate directly with the amount of lysozyme secreted into the medium. Hybridization of uninduced HL-60 cell RNA with a chicken lysozyme cDNA probe demonstrates moderate hybridization. There is a modest (five-fold) increase in lysozyme mRNA between 0 and 36 h of exposure to PMA, corresponding to the burst of lysozyme secretion by these cells. The lysozyme mRNA decreases to a level which is lower than the original baseline by 72 h, when the cells are still secreting substantial amounts of lysozyme. These data suggest that both transcriptional and post-transcriptional controls are operative in the control of lysozyme gene expression during the differentiation of HL-60 cells. Sex disparities in enrolment and reporting of outcomes by sex in contemporary clinical trials of atrial fibrillation
Background:Underrepresentation of females in randomized controlled trials (RCTs)limits generalizability and quality of the evidence guiding treatment of females. This study aimed to measure the sex disparities in participants' recruitment in RCTs of atrial fibrillation (AF) and determine associated factors, and to describe the frequency of outcomes reported by sex. Methods:MEDLINE was searched to identify RCTs of AF published between January 1, 2011, and November 20, 2021, in 12 top‐tier journals. We measured the enrollment of females using the enrollment disparity difference (EDD) which is the difference between the proportion of females in the trial and the proportion of females with AF in the underlying general population (obtained from the Global Burden of Disease). Random‐effects meta‐analyses of the EDD were performed, and multivariable meta‐regression was used to explore factors associated with disparity estimates. We also determined the proportion of trials that included sex‐stratified results. Results:Out of 1133 records screened, 142 trials were included, reporting on a total of 133 532 participants. The random‐effects summary EDD was−0.125 (95%confidence interval [CI] =−0.143 to−0.108), indicating that females were under‐enrolled by 12.5 percentage points. Female enrollment was higher in trials with higher sample size (750, adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.065, 95% CI:1.008–1.125), higher mean participants' age (aOR: 1.006, 95% CI: 1.002–1.009), and lower in trials conducted in North America compared to Europe (aOR: 0.945, 95% CI:0.898–0.995). Only 36 trials (25.4%) reported outcomes by sex, and of these 29(80.6%) performed statistical testing of the sex‐by‐treatment interaction. Conclusion:Females remain substantially less represented in RCTs of AF, and sex‐stratified reporting of primary outcomes is infrequent. Search for the Proton Decay Mode proton to neutrino K+ in Soudan 2
We have searched for the proton decay mode proton to neutrino K+ using the
one-kiloton Soudan 2 high resolution calorimeter. Contained events obtained
from a 3.56 kiloton-year fiducial exposure through June 1997 are examined for
occurrence of a visible K+ track which decays at rest into mu+ nu or pi+ pi0.
We found one candidate event consistent with background, yielding a limit,

Identical transitions in the strongly deformed Sr-99 and Sr-100
The decay of the very neutron-rich nucleus Rb-100 has been studied by
gamma-spectroscopy of on-line mass-separated samples. Schemes for beta-decay to
Sr-100 and beta-n-decay to Sr-99 are presented. New sets of transitions in
Sr-99 and Sr-100 with identical energies are observed. All identical bands so
far observed in neutron-rich Sr isotopes obey a simple energy rule valid for

Extreme Ultra-Violet Spectroscopy of the Lower Solar Atmosphere During Solar Flares
The extreme ultraviolet portion of the solar spectrum contains a wealth of
diagnostic tools for probing the lower solar atmosphere in response to an
injection of energy, particularly during the impulsive phase of solar flares.
These include temperature and density sensitive line ratios, Doppler shifted
emission lines and nonthermal broadening, abundance measurements, differential
emission measure profiles, and continuum temperatures and energetics, among
others. In this paper I shall review some of the advances made in recent years
using these techniques, focusing primarily on studies that have utilized data
from Hinode/EIS and SDO/EVE, while also providing some historical background

Large-scale Bright Fronts in the Solar Corona: A Review of "EIT waves"
``EIT waves" are large-scale coronal bright fronts (CBFs) that were first
observed in 195 \AA\ images obtained using the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging
Telescope (EIT) onboard the \emph{Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)}.
Commonly called ``EIT waves", CBFs typically appear as diffuse fronts that
propagate pseudo-radially across the solar disk at velocities of 100--700 km
s with front widths of 50-100 Mm. As their speed is greater than the
quiet coronal sound speed (200 km s) and comparable to the
local Alfv\'{e}n speed (1000 km s), they were initially
interpreted as fast-mode magnetoacoustic waves ().
Their propagation is now known to be modified by regions where the magnetosonic
sound speed varies, such as active regions and coronal holes, but there is also
evidence for stationary CBFs at coronal hole boundaries. The latter has led to
the suggestion that they may be a manifestation of a processes such as Joule
heating or magnetic reconnection, rather than a wave-related phenomena. While
the general morphological and kinematic properties of CBFs and their
association with coronal mass ejections have now been well described, there are
many questions regarding their excitation and propagation. In particular, the
theoretical interpretation of these enigmatic events as magnetohydrodynamic
waves or due to changes in magnetic topology remains the topic of much debate.Comment: 34 pages, 19 figure
Spectral analysis-based risk score enables early prediction of mortality and cerebral performance in patients undergoing therapeutic hypothermia for ventricular fibrillation and comatose status
Background: Early prognosis in comatose survivors after cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation (VF) is unreliable, especially in patients undergoing mild hypothermia. We aimed at developing a reliable risk-score to enable early prediction of cerebral performance and survival.
Methods: Sixty-one out of 239 consecutive patients undergoing mild hypothermia after cardiac arrest, with eventual return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), and comatose status on admission fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Background clinical variables, VF time and frequency domain fundamental variables were considered. The primary and secondary outcomes were a favorable neurological performance (FNP) during hospitalization and survival to hospital discharge, respectively. The predictive model was developed in a retrospective cohort (n = 32; September 2006 September 2011, 48.5 ± 10.5 months of follow-up) and further validated in a prospective cohort (n = 29; October 2011 July 2013, 5 ± 1.8 months of follow-up).
Results: FNP was present in 16 (50.0%) and 21 patients (72.4%) in the retrospective and prospective cohorts, respectively. Seventeen (53.1%) and 21 patients (72.4%), respectively, survived to hospital discharge. Both outcomes were significantly associated (p < 0.001). Retrospective multivariate analysis provided a prediction model (sensitivity = 0.94, specificity = 1) that included spectral dominant frequency, derived power density and peak ratios between high and low frequency bands, and the number of shocks delivered before ROSC. Validation on the prospective cohort showed sensitivity = 0.88 and specificity = 0.91. A model-derived risk-score properly predicted 93% of FNP. Testing the model on follow-up showed a c-statistic ≥ 0.89.
