    Interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in a near-threshold resonance

    We investigate the interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in a physical state representing a near-threshold resonance for the case of a single continuum channel. We demonstrate that such a near-threshold resonance may possess quite peculiar properties if both quark and meson dynamics generate weakly coupled near-threshold poles in the S-matrix. In particular, the scattering t-matrix may possess zeros in this case.     Diffractive Meson Production and the Quark-Pomeron Coupling

    Diffractive meson production at HERA offers interesting possibilities to investigate diffractive processes and thus to learn something about the properties of the pomeron. The most succesful phenomenological description of the pomeron so far assumes it to couple like a C=+1C = +1 isoscalar photon to single quarks. This coupling leads, however, to problems for exclusive diffractive reactions.     The BFKL and the unified angular-ordered equations are solved to determine the gluon distribution at small xx. The impact of kinematic constraints is investigated. Predictions are made for observables sensitive to the gluon at small xx. In particular comparison is made with measurements at the HERA electron-proton collider of the proton structure function F2(x,Q2)F_2 (x, Q^2) as a function of lnQ2\ln Q^2, the charm component, F2c(x,Q2)F_2^c(x,Q^2) and diffractive J/ψJ/\psi photoproduction.Comment: 17 LaTeX pages and 9 postscript figure

    The extraction of nuclear sea quark distribution and energy loss effect in Drell-Yan experiment

    The next-to-leading order and leading order analysis are performed on the differential cross section ratio from Drell-Yan process. It is found that the effect of next-to-leading order corrections can be negligible on the differential cross section ratios as a function of the quark momentum fraction in the beam proton and the target nuclei for the current Fermilab and future lower beam proton energy. The nuclear Drell-Yan reaction is an ideal tool to study the energy loss of the fast quark moving through cold nuclei. In the leading order analysis, the theoretical results with quark energy loss are in good agreement with the Fermilab E866 experimental data on the Drell-Yan differential cross section ratios as a function of the momentum fraction of the target parton. It is shown that the quark energy loss effect has significant impact on the Drell-Yan differential cross section ratios. The nuclear Drell-Yan experiment at current Fermilab and future lower energy proton beam can not provide us with more information on the nuclear sea quark distribution.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Structure Functions of the Nucleon in a Statistical Model

    Deep inelastic scattering is considered in a statistical model of the nucleon. This incorporates certain features which are absent in the standard parton model such as quantum statistical correlations which play a role in the propagation of particles when considering Feynman diagrams containing internal lines. The inclusion of the O(αs){\cal O}(\alpha_{s}) corrections in our numerical calculations allows a good fit to the data for x0.25x\geq 0.25. The fit corresponds to values of temperature and chemical potential of approximately T=0.067T=0.067 GeV and μ=0.133\mu=0.133 GeV. The latter values of parameters, however, give rise, for all xx, to a large value for R=σL/σTR=\sigma_{L}/\sigma_{T}.Comment: 16 pages TeX, 11 figures available as Postscript files, University of Bielefeld preprint BI-TP 93/3

    This white paper summarizes the scientific opportunities for utilization of the upgraded 12 GeV Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) and associated experimental equipment at Jefferson Lab. It is based on the 52 proposals recommended for approval by the Jefferson Lab Program Advisory Committee.The upgraded facility will enable a new experimental program with substantial discovery potential to address important topics in nuclear, hadronic, and electroweak physics.Comment: 64 page

    Resummation of nuclear enhanced higher twist in the Drell Yan process

    We investigate higher twist contributions to the transverse momentum broadening of Drell Yan pairs in proton nucleus collisions. We revisit the contribution of matrix elements of twist-4 and generalize this to matrix elements of arbitrary twist. An estimate of the maximal nuclear broadening effect is derived. A model for nuclear enhanced matrix elements of arbitrary twist allows us to give the result of a resummation of all twists in closed form.     A systematic study of J/psi suppression in cold nuclear matter

    Based on a Glauber model, a statistical analysis of all mid-rapidity J/psi hadroproduction and leptoproduction data on nuclear targets is carried out. This allows us to determine the J/psi-nucleon inelastic cross section, whose knowledge is crucial to interpret the J/psi suppression observed in heavy-ion collisions, at SPS and at RHIC. The values of sigma are extracted from each experiment. A clear tension between the different data sets is reported. The global fit of all data gives sigma=3.4+/-0.2 mb, which is significantly smaller than previous estimates. A similar value, sigma=3.5+/-0.2 mb, is obtained when the nDS nuclear parton densities are included in the analysis, although we emphasize that the present uncertainties on gluon (anti)shadowing do not allow for a precise determination of sigma. Finally, no significant energy dependence of the J/psi-N interaction is observed, unless strong nuclear modifications of the parton densities are assumed.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure

    Q**2-dependence of deep inelastic lepton scattering off nuclear targets

    Deep inelastic scattering of leptons off nuclear targets is analized within the convolution model taking into account nucleon-nucleon correlations. We show that in the nuclear medium nucleons are distributed according to a function that exhibits a sizeable Q**2-dependence and reduces to the ordinary light-cone distribution in the Bjorken limit. At Q**2 1 this Q**2-dependence turns out to be stronger than the one associated with the nucleon structure function, predicted by pertubative quantum chromodynamics.Comment: 11 pages including figs.
