Baryonic coherent state formation from small domain disoriented chiral condensates
Rare hyperon yields such as the Omega and AntiOmega in heavy ion collision
experiments are hard to be reproduced by numerical models. This, in combination
with the thermal fit to SPS data, seems to call for a new production mechanism
beyond the usual ones. Small domain disoriented chiral condensates (DCC) were
proposed to be such a source of rare hyperons through skyrmion formation at the
chiral phase transition. Here skyrmions are treated as coherent states of
baryons on a compact manifold so that the distribution of baryons produced from
a skyrmion can be known. From this more refined treatment, the number of
topological defects produced are more than doubled to 30 or more and the domain
size at the SPS is found to be even smaller than before at 1.1--1.5 fm. IT IS
IMPERATIVE THEREFORE NOT TO USE ONLY PION DISTRIBUTION BUT OTHER MEANS FOR
OBSERVING DCC.Comment: Talk presented at Quark Matter 2002, Nantes, France, July 2002, to

Weak force detection using a double Bose-Einstein condensate
A Bose-Einstein condensate may be used to make precise measurements of weak
forces, utilizing the macroscopic occupation of a single quantum state. We
present a scheme which uses a condensate in a double well potential to do this.
The required initial state of the condensate is discussed, and the limitations
on the sensitivity due to atom collisions and external coupling are analyzed.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, Eq.(41) has been correcte
Quantum gates with neutral atoms: Controlling collisional interactions in time dependent traps
We theoretically study specific schemes for performing a fundamental
two-qubit quantum gate via controlled atomic collisions by switching
microscopic potentials. In particular we calculate the fidelity of a gate
operation for a configuration where a potential barrier between two atoms is
instantaneously removed and restored after a certain time. Possible
implementations could be based on microtraps created by magnetic and electric
fields, or potentials induced by laser light.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Efficient magneto-optical trapping of Yb atoms with a violet laser diode
We report the first efficient trapping of rare-earth Yb atoms with a
high-power violet laser diode (LD). An injection-locked violet LD with a 25 mW
frequency-stabilized output was used for the magneto-optical trapping (MOT) of
fermionic as well as bosonic Yb isotopes. A typical number of
atoms for Yb with a trap density of cm was
obtained. A 10 mW violet external-cavity LD (ECLD) was used for the
one-dimensional (1D) slowing of an effusive Yb atomic beam without a Zeeman
slower resulting in a 35-fold increase in the number of trapped atoms. The
overall characteristics of our compact violet MOT, e.g., the loss time of 1 s,
the loading time of 400 ms, and the cloud temperature of 0.7 mK, are comparable
to those in previously reported violet Yb MOTs, yet with a greatly reduced cost
and complexity of the experiment.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, Phys. Rev. A (to be published
Decoherence in Bose-Einstein Condensates: towards Bigger and Better Schroedinger Cats
We consider a quantum superposition of Bose-Einstein condensates in two
immiscible internal states. A decoherence rate for the resulting Schroedinger
cat is calculated and shown to be a significant threat to this macroscopic
quantum superposition of BEC's. An experimental scenario is outlined where the
decoherence rate due to the thermal cloud is dramatically reduced thanks to
trap engineering and "symmetrization" of the environment which allow for the
Schroedinger cat to be an approximate pointer states.Comment: 12 pages in RevTex; improved presentation; a new comment on
decoherence-free pointer subspaces in BEC; accepted in Phys.Rev.
Improved Limits on Spin-Dependent WIMP-Proton Interactions from a Two Liter CFI Bubble Chamber
Data from the operation of a bubble chamber filled with 3.5 kg of CFI
in a shallow underground site are reported. An analysis of ultrasound signals
accompanying bubble nucleations confirms that alpha decays generate a
significantly louder acoustic emission than single nuclear recoils, leading to
an efficient background discrimination. Three dark matter candidate events were
observed during an effective exposure of 28.1 kg-day, consistent with a neutron
background. This observation provides the strongest direct detection constraint
to date on WIMP-proton spin-dependent scattering for WIMP masses
GeV/c.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures V2 submitted to match journal versio
Macroscopic Quantum Fluctuations in the Josephson Dynamics of Two Weakly Linked Bose-Einstein Condensates
We study the quantum corrections to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for two
weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates. The goals are: 1) to investigate
dynamical regimes at the borderline between the classical and quantum behaviour
of the bosonic field; 2) to search for new macroscopic quantum coherence
phenomena not observable with other superfluid/superconducting systems. Quantum
fluctuations renormalize the classical Josephson oscillation frequencies. Large
amplitude phase oscillations are modulated, exhibiting collapses and revivals.
We describe a new inter-well oscillation mode, with a vanishing (ensemble
averaged) mean value of the observables, but with oscillating mean square
fluctuations. Increasing the number of condensate atoms, we recover the
classical Gross-Pitaevskii (Josephson) dynamics, without invoking the
symmetry-breaking of the Gauge invariance.Comment: Submitte
Many particle entanglement in two-component Bose-Einstein Condensates
We investigate schemes to dynamically create many particle entangled states
of a two component Bose-Einstein condensate in a very short time proportional
to 1/N where is the number of condensate particles. For small we
compare exact numerical calculations with analytical semiclassical estimates
and find very good agreement for . We also estimate the effect of
decoherence on our scheme, study possible scenarios for measuring the entangled
states, and investigate experimental imperfections.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
