Procedural and declarative knowledge: an evolutionary perspective
It appears that there are resemblances in the organization of
memory and the visual system, although the functions of these faculties
differ considerably. In this article, the principles behind this organization
are discussed. One important principle regards the distinction between
declarative and procedural knowledge, between knowing that and knowing
how. Declarative knowledge is considered here not as an alternative kind of
knowledge, as is usually the case in theories of memory, but as part of
procedural knowledge. In our view this leads to another approach with
respect to the distinction. Declarative knowledge has occupied more
attention in (cognitive) psychological research than can be justified on the
basis of the importance of procedural knowledge for behavior. We also
discuss the question whether there are other brain faculties that reflect the
same organizational characteristics. We conclude with some speculations
about the consequent role of consciousness in such a tentative model
Measurement of the longitudinal diffusion of ionization electrons in the MicroBooNE detector
Abstract: Accurate knowledge of electron transport properties is vital to understanding the information provided by liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). Ionization electron drift-lifetime, local electric field distortions caused by positive ion accumulation, and electron diffusion can all significantly impact the measured signal waveforms. This paper presents a measurement of the effective longitudinal electron diffusion coefficient, DL, in MicroBooNE at the nominal electric field strength of 273.9 V/cm. Historically, this measurement has been made in LArTPC prototype detectors. This represents the first measurement in a large-scale (85 tonne active volume) LArTPC operating in a neutrino beam. This is the largest dataset ever used for this measurement. Using a sample of ∼70,000 through-going cosmic ray muon tracks tagged with MicroBooNE's cosmic ray tagger system, we measure DL = 3.74+0.28 -0.29 cm2/s
From Black-Box Learning Objects to Glass-Box Learning Objects
Abstract. In the field of e-learning, a popular solution to make teaching material reusable is to represent it as learning object (LO). However, building better adaptive educational software also takes an explicit model of the learner’s cognitive process related to LOs. This paper presents a three layers model that explicitly connect the description of learners ’ cognitive processes to LOs. The first layer describes the knowledge from a logical perspective. The second describes cognitive processes. The third builds LOs upon the two first layers. The proposed model has been successfully implemented in an intelligent tutoring system for teaching Boolean reduction that provides highly tailored instruction thanks to the model.
