    Document expansion for image retrieval

    Successful information retrieval requires eïżœective matching between the user's search request and the contents of relevant documents. Often the request entered by a user may not use the same topic relevant terms as the authors' of the documents. One potential approach to address problems of query-document term mismatch is document expansion to include additional topically relevant indexing terms in a document which may encourage its retrieval when relevant to queries which do not match its original contents well. We propose and evaluate a new document expansion method using external resources. While results of previous research have been inconclusive in determining the impact of document expansion on retrieval eïżœectiveness, our method is shown to work eïżœectively for text-based image retrieval of short image annotation documents. Our approach uses the Okapi query expansion algorithm as a method for document expansion. We further show improved performance can be achieved by using a \document reduction" approach to include only the signiïżœcant terms in a document in the expansion process. Our experiments on the WikipediaMM task at ImageCLEF 2008 show an increase of 16.5% in mean average precision (MAP) compared to a variation of Okapi BM25 retrieval model. To compare document expansion with query expansion, we also test query expansion from an external resource which leads an improvement by 9.84% in MAP over our baseline. Our conclusion is that the document expansion with document reduction and in combination with query expansion produces the overall best retrieval results for shortlength document retrieval. For this image retrieval task, we also concluded that query expansion from external resource does not outperform the document expansion method

    Applying digital content management to support localisation

    The retrieval and presentation of digital content such as that on the World Wide Web (WWW) is a substantial area of research. While recent years have seen huge expansion in the size of web-based archives that can be searched efficiently by commercial search engines, the presentation of potentially relevant content is still limited to ranked document lists represented by simple text snippets or image keyframe surrogates. There is expanding interest in techniques to personalise the presentation of content to improve the richness and effectiveness of the user experience. One of the most significant challenges to achieving this is the increasingly multilingual nature of this data, and the need to provide suitably localised responses to users based on this content. The Digital Content Management (DCM) track of the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) is seeking to develop technologies to support advanced personalised access and presentation of information by combining elements from the existing research areas of Adaptive Hypermedia and Information Retrieval. The combination of these technologies is intended to produce significant improvements in the way users access information. We review key features of these technologies and introduce early ideas for how these technologies can support localisation and localised content before concluding with some impressions of future directions in DCM

    Identifying common user behaviour in multilingual search logs

    The LADS (Log Analysis for Digital Societies) task at CLEF aims at investigating user actions in a multilingual setting. We carried out an analysis of search logs with the objectives of investigating how users from different linguistic or cultural backgrounds behave in search, and how the discovery of patterns in user actions could be used for community identification. The findings confirm that users from a different background behave differently, and that there are identifiable patterns in the user actions. The findings suggest that there is scope for further investigation of how search logs can be exploited to personalise and improve cross-language search as well as improve the TEL search system

    Multilingual adaptive search for digital libraries

    This paper describes a framework for Adaptive Multilingual Information Retrieval (AMIR) which allows multilingual resource discovery and delivery using on-the-ïŹ‚y machine translation of documents and queries. Result documents are presented to the user in a contextualised manner. Challenges and affordances of both Adaptive and Multilingual IR, with a particular focus on Digital Libraries, are detailed. The framework components are motivated by a series of results from experiments on query logs and documents from The European Library. We conclude that factoring adaptivity and multilinguality aspects into the search process can enhance the user’s experience with online Digital Libraries

    Stability of the Scalar Potential and Symmetry Breaking in the Economical 3-3-1 Model

    A detailed study of the criteria for stability of the scalar potential and the proper electroweak symmetry breaking pattern in the economical 3-3-1 model, is presented. For the analysis we use, and improve, a method previously developed to study the scalar potential in the two-Higgs-doublet extension of the standard model. A new theorem related to the stability of the potential is stated. As a consequence of this study, the consistency of the economical 3-3-1 model emerges.Comment: to be published in EPJ C, 13 page

    On Vanishing Theorems For Vector Bundle Valued p-Forms And Their Applications

    Let F:[0,∞)→[0,∞)F: [0, \infty) \to [0, \infty) be a strictly increasing C2C^2 function with F(0)=0F(0)=0. We unify the concepts of FF-harmonic maps, minimal hypersurfaces, maximal spacelike hypersurfaces, and Yang-Mills Fields, and introduce FF-Yang-Mills fields, FF-degree, FF-lower degree, and generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld fields (with the plus sign or with the minus sign) on manifolds. When F(t)=t,1p(2t)p2,1+2t−1,F(t)=t, \frac 1p(2t)^{\frac p2}, \sqrt{1+2t} -1, and 1−1−2t,1-\sqrt{1-2t}, the FF-Yang-Mills field becomes an ordinary Yang-Mills field, pp-Yang-Mills field, a generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld field with the plus sign, and a generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld field with the minus sign on a manifold respectively. We also introduce the EF,g−E_{F,g}-energy functional (resp. FF-Yang-Mills functional) and derive the first variational formula of the EF,g−E_{F,g}-energy functional (resp. FF-Yang-Mills functional) with applications. In a more general frame, we use a unified method to study the stress-energy tensors that arise from calculating the rate of change of various functionals when the metric of the domain or base manifold is changed. These stress-energy tensors, linked to FF-conservation laws yield monotonicity formulae. A "macroscopic" version of these monotonicity inequalities enables us to derive some Liouville type results and vanishing theorems for p−p-forms with values in vector bundles, and to investigate constant Dirichlet boundary value problems for 1-forms. In particular, we obtain Liouville theorems for F−F-harmonic maps (e.g. pp-harmonic maps), and F−F-Yang-Mills fields (e.g. generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld fields on manifolds). We also obtain generalized Chern type results for constant mean curvature type equations for p−p-forms on Rm\Bbb{R}^m and on manifolds MM with the global doubling property by a different approach. The case p=0p=0 and M=RmM=\mathbb{R}^m is due to Chern.Comment: 1. This is a revised version with several new sections and an appendix that will appear in Communications in Mathematical Physics. 2.     Partially composite two-Higgs doublet model

    In the extra dimensional scenarios with gauge fields in the bulk, the Kaluza-Klein (KK) gauge bosons can induce Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type attractive four-fermion interactions, which can break electroweak symmetry dynamically with accompanying composite Higgs fields. We consider a possibility that electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) is triggered by both a fundamental Higgs and a composite Higgs arising in a dynamical symmetry breaking mechanism induced by a new strong dynamics. The resulting Higgs sector is a partially composite two-Higgs doublet model with specific boundary conditions on the coupling and mass parameters originating at a compositeness scale Λ\Lambda. The phenomenology of this model is discussed including the collider phenomenology at LHC and ILC.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure

    Finding Temporal Patterns in Noisy Longitudinal Data: A Study in Diabetic Retinopathy

    This paper describes an approach to temporal pattern mining using the concept of user defined temporal prototypes to define the nature of the trends of interests. The temporal patterns are defined in terms of sequences of support values associated with identified frequent patterns. The prototypes are defined mathematically so that they can be mapped onto the temporal patterns. The focus for the advocated temporal pattern mining process is a large longitudinal patient database collected as part of a diabetic retinopathy screening programme, The data set is, in itself, also of interest as it is very noisy (in common with other similar medical datasets) and does not feature a clear association between specific time stamps and subsets of the data. The diabetic retinopathy application, the data warehousing and cleaning process, and the frequent pattern mining procedure (together with the application of the prototype concept) are all described in the paper. An evaluation of the frequent pattern mining process is also presented

    Low-temperature anomalous specific heat without tunneling modes: a simulation for a-Si with voids

    Using empirical potential molecular dynamics we compute dynamical matrix eigenvalues and eigenvectors for a 4096 atom model of amorphous silicon and a set of models with voids of different size based on it. This information is then employed to study the localization properties of the low-energy vibrational states, calculate the specific heat C(T) and examine the low-temperature properties of our models usually attributed to the presence of tunneling states in amorphous silicon. The results of our calculations for C(T) and "excess specific heat bulge" in the C(T)/T^3 vs. T graph for voidless a-Si appear to be in good agreement with experiment; moreover our investigation shows that the presence of localized low-energy excitations in the vibrational spectrum of our models with voids strongly manifests itself as a sharp peak in C(T)/T^3 dependence at T < 3K. To our knowledge this is the first numerical simulation that provides adequate agreement with experiment for the very low-temperature properties of specific heat in disordered systems within the limits of harmonic approximation.Comment: 5 pages with 2 ps figures, submitted to PR

    Pinning of a solid--liquid--vapour interface by stripes of obstacles

    We use a macroscopic Hamiltonian approach to study the pinning of a solid--liquid--vapour contact line on an array of equidistant stripes of obstacles perpendicular to the liquid. We propose an estimate of the density of pinning stripes for which collective pinning of the contact line happens. This estimate is shown to be in good agreement with Langevin equation simulation of the macroscopic Hamiltonian. Finally we introduce a 2--dimensional mean field theory which for small strength of the pinning stripes and for small capillary length gives an excellent description of the averaged height of the contact line.Comment: Plain tex, 12 pages, 3 figures available upon reques
