Relationship regulation in the face of eye candy: A motivated cognition framework for understanding responses to attractive alternatives

    No full text
Item does not contain fulltextThe ability to maintain a satisfying and stable romantic relationship may promote health and well-being, yet, the stability of an ongoing relationship may sometimes be challenged by the availability of attractive alternative partners. We review recent findings demonstrating that people - deliberatively and automatically - display a number of strategies that help them protect their current relationship from attractive alternatives. For example, romantically involved individuals typically tend to derogate the physical attractiveness of potential alternative partners. We review different theoretical perspectives that explain why this occurs, and discuss possible mechanisms pertaining to how this occurs, focusing in particular on the independent and possibly interactive roles of motivation and self-regulatory capacity.5 p

A STRUCTURAL STUDY OF THE SMECTIC MESOPHASES OF TWO BIPHENYL COMPOUNDS AND AN X-RAY INVESTIGATION OF THE MISCIBILITY CRITERION

The biphenyl compounds 4'-n-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl and 4'-n-octyloxy-4-cyanobiphenyl form smectic phases of a novel type. The X-ray diffraction patterns are unlike any other previously reported ; they contain a sharp inner ring (corresponding to the layer thickness) and two diffuse outer rings. The layer thickness indicates some form of bilayer structure with molecules partially overlapping in the centre of the layer. A number of alternative models for the precise molecular arrangement are suggested. This smectic phase is miscible with the conventional SA phase formed by 2-(4'-n-octadecyloxybenzylideneamino) fluorene. X-ray investigations indicated that the layer thickness changes smoothly across the composition range. In spite of the difference in molecular length and the difference between the structures of the two pure smectic phases, it appears that in mixtures there is a complete and intimate mixing of the molecules

PHASE TRANSITIONS OBSERVED ON WARMING FAST-QUENCHED MBBA

When the nematic phase of MBBA is rapidly cooled by exposure to liquid nitrogen a glassy solid is formed which, X-ray diffraction studies indicate, has the nematic ordering quenchedin. The sequence of events which occur upon reheating this glass was monitored using X-ray diffraction and a differential thermal technique. A transition to a metastable crystalline phase occurs at about -14 °C and this phase converts into the nematic phase via some other phase, possibly the stable crystalline phase or a smectic mesophase. We propose the name anofropic for monotropic transitions that occur on heating

Strong but insecure: Examining the prevalence and correlates of insecure attachment bonds with attachment figures

    No full text
This study examined whether people can be insecurely attached to figures who are actively sought out (and not just desired) to fulfill attachment functions and whether this has negative consequences for psychological well-being. A total of 122 participants rated 3-15 relational targets on measures including the extent to which the target fulfills important attachment functions and the attachment style characterizing the relationship. Participants also completed general measures of well-being and attachment style. We specifically focused on targets who could be classified as attachment figures based on the WHOTO and examined the attachment style characterizing these relationships. Results show that a significant proportion of attachment bonds can be characterized by insecurity, which has consequences both for the extent to which these attachment figures can fulfill important attachment functions and for overall well-being. The discussion considers the implications of these results for attachment priming research and the distinction between attachment strength and security
