Demographic factors influencing consent for cadaver organ donation
The records of all donor referrals to Groote Schuur Hospital over a 5½-year period were retrospectively examined to determine which factors influenced the families' decision on organ donation. In 35% of these referrals the families were not approached for consent. The reasons for this included the potential donor being unsuitable for organ donation or not meeting all the criteria for brain death. The effects of the age, sex, race and the cause of death of the potential donor on whether the family gave consent were investigated. This study demonstrates that consent was given more readily when the potential donor was aged ≥10 years, that the sex of the potential donor appeared to have no effect on the decision by the family about organ donation, that black families gave consent for organ donation less frequently than families of other race groups and that consent was obtained more easily when death was due to suicide
The first 100 kidney transplants from living related donors at Groote Schuur Hospital
Improved results with cadaver kidney transplantation and the increase in the number of cadaver organs have caused the continued use of donor kidneys from living relatives to be questioned. In this analysis of our first 100 renal transplants involving a living related donor, the 5-year graft survival rate was 70%. The 5-year graft survival rate for recipients of grafts from HLA-identical donors was 81%, as opposed to the 64% survival rate for grafts from one-haplotype donors. Recipients of grafts from one-haplotype-matched donors who received donor-specific blood transfusions demonstrated better graft survival than those who were not transfused. This analysis demonstrates that the results of living related kidney transplantation are good, and suggests that donor-specific blood transfusions may be beneficial
From Analysis Model to Software Architecture: a PIM2PIM Mapping.
To our knowledge, no current software development methodology explicitly describes how to transit from the analysis model to the software architecture of the application. This paper presents a method to derive the
software architecture of a system from its analysis model. To do this, we are going to use MDA. Both the analysis model and the architectural model are PIMs described with UML 2. The model type mapping designed consists of
several rules (expressed using OCL and natural language) that, when applied to the analysis artifacts, generate the software architecture of the application.
Specifically the rules act on elements of the UML 2 metamodel (metamodel mapping). We have developed a tool (using Smalltalk) that permits the automatic application of these rules to an analysis model defined in RoseTM to
generate the application architecture expressed in the architectural style C2
On Slow Light as a Black Hole Analogue
Although slow light (electromagnetically induced transparency) would seem an
ideal medium in which to institute a ``dumb hole'' (black hole analog), it
suffers from a number of problems. We show that the high phase velocity in the
slow light regime ensures that the system cannot be used as an analog
displaying Hawking radiation. Even though an appropriately designed slow-light
set-up may simulate classical features of black holes -- such as horizon, mode
mixing, Bogoliubov coefficients, etc. -- it does not reproduce the related

Quantum Correlation in One-dimensional Extend Quantum Compass Model
We study the correlations in the one-dimensional extended quantum compass
model in a transverse magnetic field. By exactly solving the Hamiltonian, we
find that the quantum correlation of the ground state of one-dimensional
quantum compass model is vanishing. We show that quantum discord can not only
locate the quantum critical points, but also discern the orders of phase
transitions. Furthermore, entanglement quantified by concurrence is also

Three-Dimensional Gravity with Conformal Scalar and Asymptotic Virasoro Algebra
Strominger has derived the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the BTZ black hole
using asymptotic Virasoro algebra. We apply Strominger's method to a black hole
solution found by Martinez and Zanelli (MZ). This is a solution of
three-dimensional gravity with a conformal scalar field. The solution is not
, but it is asymptotically ; therefore, it has the asymptotic
Virasoro algebra. We compute the central charge for the theory and compares
Cardy's formula with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. It turns out that the
functional form does agree, but the overall numerical coefficient does not.
This is because this approach gives the "maximum possible entropy" for the

Variations on the Seventh Route to Relativity
As motivated in the full abstract, this paper further investigates Barbour,
Foster and O Murchadha (BFO)'s 3-space formulation of GR. This is based on
best-matched lapse-eliminated actions and gives rise to several theories
including GR and a conformal gravity theory. We study the simplicity postulates
assumed in BFO's work and how to weaken them, so as to permit the inclusion of
the full set of matter fields known to occur in nature.
We study the configuration spaces of gravity-matter systems upon which BFO's
formulation leans. In further developments the lapse-eliminated actions used by
BFO become impractical and require generalization. We circumvent many of these
problems by the equivalent use of lapse-uneliminated actions, which furthermore
permit us to interpret BFO's formulation within Kuchar's generally covariant
hypersurface framework. This viewpoint provides alternative reasons to BFO's as
to why the inclusion of bosonic fields in the 3-space approach gives rise to
minimally-coupled scalar fields, electromagnetism and Yang--Mills theory. This
viewpoint also permits us to quickly exhibit further GR-matter theories
admitted by the 3-space formulation. In particular, we show that the spin-1/2
fermions of the theories of Dirac, Maxwell--Dirac and Yang--Mills--Dirac, all
coupled to GR, are admitted by the generalized 3-space formulation we present.
Thus all the known fundamental matter fields can be accommodated. This
corresponds to being able to pick actions for all these theories which have
less kinematics than suggested by the generally covariant hypersurface
framework. For all these theories, Wheeler's thin sandwich conjecture may be

Cosmological equations and Thermodynamics on Apparent Horizon in Thick Braneworld
We derive the generalized Friedmann equation governing the cosmological
evolution inside the thick brane model in the presence of two curvature
correction terms: a four-dimensional scalar curvature from induced gravity on
the brane, and a five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet curvature term. We find two
effective four-dimensional reductions of the Friedmann equation in some limits
and demonstrate that they can be rewritten as the first law of thermodynamics
