    Lake Kivu Water Chemistry Variation with Depth Over Time, Northwestern Rwanda

    The water of East African rift lakes contains large amounts of dissolved chemicals such as carbon dioxide, methane greatly and others like  phosphate, silicate, Sulfate, Sulfide, Iron, Ammonia, Alkalinity etc. Lake Kivu is a large, deep rift basin lake located in the western branch of the East African rift zone that contains a methane gas deposit of great economic interest with two main sources: Inorganic carbon dioxide CO2 + 4H2 = CH4 + 2H2O and Organic methanogenesis CH3COOH =CH4 + CO2. Lake Kivu is a stratified, meromictic lake bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The lake has a surface area of 2,370 Km2, a volume of 580 Km3 and a maximum water depth of 485 m. To characterize the vertical variation of Lake Kivu water chemistry, 8 samples of water were collected using Niskin bottles in Lake Kivu near Gisenyi town. Water samples were therefore collected at different depths: 0 m, 40 m, 90 m, 240 m, 290 m, 340 m, 340 m, and 390 m. Hatch kits were used to analyze  water chemistry of samples taken of Sulfate, Sulfide, Iron, Ammonia, Alkalinity, Silica, PO4,andphosphorus.The results revealed that alkalinity  increases in the monimolimnion part due to the precipitation of calcium carbonate in the upper levels of the water column and dissolution in the monimolimnion. The conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature and pH weremeasured by CTD Sonde. Water column data from these studies showed increasing concentrations with depth. The divide between the mixolimnion and monomolimnion is estimated at a depth of around 40 m. Higher amounts of silica observed closer to the shoreline is likely a result of an influx of siliciclastic sediment and increased silica with depth is likely a result of the dissolution of diatoms below the photic zone.     Exact asymptotics of the freezing transition of a logarithmically correlated random energy model

    We consider a logarithmically correlated random energy model, namely a model for directed polymers on a Cayley tree, which was introduced by Derrida and Spohn. We prove asymptotic properties of a generating function of the partition function of the model by studying a discrete time analogy of the KPP-equation - thus translating Bramson's work on the KPP-equation into a discrete time case. We also discuss connections to extreme value statistics of a branching random walk and a rescaled multiplicative cascade measure beyond the critical point

    A volcanic tuff rock known as cangahua (Ecuador) or tepetate (Mexico) is found throughout the Andes. Problems have arisen as the layers of light but fragile soil that once covered the tuff have been lost for both natural (environmental) reasons and because of over-cultivation. When the soil is gone, the tuff is impermeable and sterile. Now, a project in Ecuador has determined that the tuff itself can be reclaimed and is supporting a programme that sends bulldozers to the tuff regions to break up the rock and create a new fertile soil

    A new straight line reconstruction methodology from multi-spectral stereo aerial images

    In this study, a new methodology for the reconstruction of line features from multispectral stereo aerial images is presented. We take full advantage of the existing multispectral information in aerial images all over the steps of pre-processing and edge detection. To accurately describe the straight line segments, a principal component analysis technique is adapted. The line to line correspondences between the stereo images are established using a new pair-wise stereo matching approach. The approach involves new constraints, and the redundancy inherent in pair relations gives us a possibility to reduce the number of false matches in a probabilistic manner. The methodology is tested over three different urban test sites and provided good results for line matching and reconstruction

    Evaluations of gaming simulations and business games as teaching devices are typically end-state driven. This emphasis fails to detect how the simulation being evaluated does or does not bring about its desired consequences. This paper advances the use of a logic model approach which possesses a holistic perspective that aims at including all elements associated with the situation created by a game. The use of the logic model approach is illustrated as applied to Simgame, a board game created for secondary school level business education in six European Union countries

    The Sigma 13 (10-14) twin in alpha-Al2O3: A model for a general grain boundary

    The atomistic structure and energetics of the Sigma 13 (10-14)[1-210] symmetrical tilt grain boundary in alpha-Al2O3 are studied by first-principles calculations based on the local-density-functional theory with a mixed-basis pseudopotential method. Three configurations, stable with respect to intergranular cleavage, are identified: one Al-terminated glide-mirror twin boundary, and two O-terminated twin boundaries, with glide-mirror and two-fold screw-rotation symmetries, respectively. Their relative energetics as a function of axial grain separation are described, and the local electronic structure and bonding are analysed. The Al-terminated variant is predicted to be the most stable one, confirming previous empirical calculations, but in contrast with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations on high-purity diffusion-bonded bicrystals, which resulted in an O-terminated structure. An explanation of this discrepancy is proposed, based on the different relative energetics of the internal interfaces with respect to the free surfaces
