    Does accelerating universe indicates Brans-Dicke theory

    The evolution of universe in Brans-Dicke (BD) theory is discussed in this paper. Considering a parameterized scenario for BD scalar field ϕ=ϕ0aα\phi=\phi_{0}a^{\alpha} which plays the role of gravitational "constant" GG, we apply the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to investigate a global constraints on BD theory with a self-interacting potential according to the current observational data: Union2 dataset of type supernovae Ia (SNIa), high-redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) data, observational Hubble data (OHD), the cluster X-ray gas mass fraction, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. It is shown that an expanded universe from deceleration to acceleration is given in this theory, and the constraint results of dimensionless matter density Ω0m\Omega_{0m} and parameter α\alpha are, Ω0m=0.2860.0390.047+0.037+0.050\Omega_{0m}=0.286^{+0.037+0.050}_{-0.039-0.047} and α=0.00460.01710.0206+0.0149+0.0171\alpha=0.0046^{+0.0149+0.0171}_{-0.0171-0.0206} which is consistent with the result of current experiment exploration, α0.132124\mid\alpha\mid \leq 0.132124. In addition, we use the geometrical diagnostic method, jerk parameter jj, to distinguish the BD theory and cosmological constant model in Einstein's theory of general relativity.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

    Hermitian K-theory and 2-regularity for totally real number fields

    We completely determine the 2-primary torsion subgroups of the hermitian K-groups of rings of 2-integers in totally real 2-regular number fields. The result is almost periodic with period 8. We also identify the homotopy fibers of the forgetful and hyperbolic maps relating hermitian and algebraic K-theory. The result is then exactly periodic of period 8. In both the orthogonal and symplectic cases, we prove the 2-primary hermitian Quillen-Lichtenbaum conjecture.Comment: To appear in Mathematische Annale

    Automation of Cardiopulmonary Bypass Data Collection

    A computer assisted data collection system is presented. The system is comprised of a microprocessor with permanent memory, a general purpose interface board capable of analog to digital conversion, and communication ports to collect data from other microprocessors. Continuous in-line blood gas values and ventilation control parameter values are passed to the microprocessor for storage in an addressable memory location. Analog signals for blood flow, patient temperatures and pressures are also stored and referenced to real time. This system provides the perfusionist with the following capabilities in the in vivo laboratory and OH surgical suite; minute-by-minute trending of the progress of perfusion, documentation of device and perfusionist performance and patient response to dynamic changes. Physiological transformations and calculations are automatically performed and the microprocessor notifies the perfusionist of user defined alarm situations. Analysis of the data base created on-line by this system leads to learning situations that improve open heart surgical teamwork, the consistency of patient care, and provides a possible defense against medical legal complication
