    We characterize those identities and independencies which hold for all probability functions on a unary language satisfying the Principle of Atom Exchangeability. We then show that if this is strengthen to the requirement that Johnson's Sufficientness Principle holds, thus giving Carnap's Continuum of inductive methods for languages with at least two predicates, then new and somewhat inexplicable identities and independencies emerge, the latter even in the case of Carnap's Continuum for the language with just a single predicate

    Absence of a dose-rate effect in the transformation of C3H 10T1/2 cells by α-particles

    The findings of Hill et al. (1984) on the greatly enhanced transformation frequencies at very low dose rates of fission neutrons induced us to perform an analogous study with -particles at comparable dose rates. Transformation frequencies were determined with γ-rays at high dose rate (0·5 Gy/min), and with -particles at high (0·2 Gy/min) and at low dose rates (0·83-2·5 mGy/min) in the C3H 10T1/2 cell system. α-particles were substantially more effective than γ-rays, both for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation at high and low dose rates. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation was of similar magnitude, and ranged from about 3 at an -particle dose of 2 Gy to values of the order of 10 at 0·25 Gy. In contrast to the experiments of Hill et al. (1984) with fission neutrons, no increased transformation frequencies were observed when the -particle dose was protracted over several hours

    Optimizing wide-area sound reproduction using a single subwoofer with dynamic signal decorrelation

    A central goal in small room sound reproduction is achieving consistent sound energy distribution across a wide listening area. This is especially difficult at low-frequencies where room-modes result in highly position-dependent listening experiences. While numerous techniques for multiple-degree-of-freedom systems exist and have proven to be highly effective, this work focuses on achieving position-independent low-frequency listening experiences with a single subwoofer. The negative effects due to room-modes and comb-filtering are mitigated by applying a time-varying decorrelation method known as dynamic diffuse signal processing. Results indicate that spatial variance in magnitude response can be significantly reduced, although there is a sharp trade-off between the algorithm’s effectiveness and the resulting perceptual coloration of the audio signal.N/

    Magnetoelectric susceptibility of a metamaterial built from split ring resonators have been investigated both experimentally and within an equivalent circuit model. The absolute values have been shown to exceed by two orders of magnitude that of classical magnetoelectric materials. The metamaterial investigated reaches the theoretically predicted value of the magnetoelectric susceptibility which is equal to the geometric average of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Violation of the Wiedemann-Franz Law in a Large-N Solution of the t-J Model

    We show that the Wiedemann-Franz law, which holds for Landau Fermi liquids, breaks down in a large-n treatment of the t-J model. The calculated ratio of the in-plane thermal and electrical conductivities agrees quantitatively with experiments on the normal state of the electron-doped Pr_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 (x = 0.15) cuprate superconductor. The violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in the uniform phase contrasts with other properties of the phase that are Fermi liquid like.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     Cooling rate dependence of the antiferromagnetic domain structure of a single crystalline charge ordered manganite

    The low temperature phase of single crystals of Nd0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 and Gd0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 manganites is investigated by squid magnetometry. Nd0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 undergoes a charge-ordering transition at TCOT_{CO}=245K, and a long range CE-type antiferromagnetic state is established at TNT_N=145K. The dc-magnetization shows a cooling rate dependence below TNT_N, associated with a weak spontaneous moment. The associated excess magnetization is related to uncompensated spins in the CE-type antiferromagnetic structure, and to the presence in this state of fully orbital ordered regions separated by orbital domain walls. The observed cooling rate dependence is interpreted to be a consequence of the rearrangement of the orbital domain state induced by the large structural changes occurring upon cooling.Comment: REVTeX4; 7 pages, 4 figures.
