Survival-Time Distribution for Inelastic Collapse
In a recent publication [PRL {\bf 81}, 1142 (1998)] it was argued that a
randomly forced particle which collides inelastically with a boundary can
undergo inelastic collapse and come to rest in a finite time. Here we discuss
the survival probability for the inelastic collapse transition. It is found
that the collapse-time distribution behaves asymptotically as a power-law in
time, and that the exponent governing this decay is non-universal. An
approximate calculation of the collapse-time exponent confirms this behaviour
and shows how inelastic collapse can be viewed as a generalised persistence

Charge and mass effects on the evaporation of higher-dimensional rotating black holes
To study the dynamics of discharge of a brane black hole in TeV gravity
scenarios, we obtain the approximate electromagnetic field due to the charged
black hole, by solving Maxwell's equations perturbatively on the brane. In
addition, arguments are given for brane metric corrections due to backreaction.
We couple brane scalar and brane fermion fields with non-zero mass and charge
to the background, and study the Hawking radiation process using well known low
energy approximations as well as a WKB approximation in the high energy limit.
We argue that contrary to common claims, the initial evaporation is not

The Non-linear Dynamics of Meaning-Processing in Social Systems
Social order cannot be considered as a stable phenomenon because it contains
an order of reproduced expectations. When the expectations operate upon one
another, they generate a non-linear dynamics that processes meaning. Specific
meaning can be stabilized, for example, in social institutions, but all meaning
arises from a horizon of possible meanings. Using Luhmann's (1984) social
systems theory and Rosen's (1985) theory of anticipatory systems, I submit
equations for modeling the processing of meaning in inter-human communication.
First, a self-referential system can use a model of itself for the
anticipation. Under the condition of functional differentiation, the social
system can be expected to entertain a set of models; each model can also
contain a model of the other models. Two anticipatory mechanisms are then
possible: one transversal between the models, and a longitudinal one providing
the modeled systems with meaning from the perspective of hindsight. A system
containing two anticipatory mechanisms can become hyper-incursive. Without
making decisions, however, a hyper-incursive system would be overloaded with
uncertainty. Under this pressure, informed decisions tend to replace the
"natural preferences" of agents and an order of cultural expectations can
increasingly be shaped
Fraction of uninfected walkers in the one-dimensional Potts model
The dynamics of the one-dimensional q-state Potts model, in the zero
temperature limit, can be formulated through the motion of random walkers which
either annihilate (A + A -> 0) or coalesce (A + A -> A) with a q-dependent
probability. We consider all of the walkers in this model to be mutually
infectious. Whenever two walkers meet, they experience mutual contamination.
Walkers which avoid an encounter with another random walker up to time t remain
uninfected. The fraction of uninfected walkers is investigated numerically and
found to decay algebraically, U(t) \sim t^{-\phi(q)}, with a nontrivial
exponent \phi(q). Our study is extended to include the coupled
diffusion-limited reaction A+A -> B, B+B -> A in one dimension with equal
initial densities of A and B particles. We find that the density of walkers
decays in this model as \rho(t) \sim t^{-1/2}. The fraction of sites unvisited
by either an A or a B particle is found to obey a power law, P(t) \sim
t^{-\theta} with \theta \simeq 1.33. We discuss these exponents within the
context of the q-state Potts model and present numerical evidence that the
fraction of walkers which remain uninfected decays as U(t) \sim t^{-\phi},
where \phi \simeq 1.13 when infection occurs between like particles only, and

Safety and efficacy of eculizumab in the prevention of antibody-mediated rejection in living-donor kidney transplant recipients requiring desensitization therapy: A randomized trial
We report results of a phase 2, randomized, multicenter, openâlabel, twoâarm study
evaluating the safety and efficacy of eculizumab in preventing acute antibodyâ
mediated rejection (AMR) in sensitized recipients of livingâdonor kidney transplants
requiring pretransplant desensitization (NCT01399593). In total, 102 patients underâ
went desensitization. Posttransplant, 51 patients received standard of care (SOC)
and 51 received eculizumab. The primary end point was week 9 posttransplant treatâ
ment failure rate, a composite of: biopsyâproven acute AMR (Banff 2007 grade II or
III; assessed by blinded central pathology); graft loss; death; or loss to followâup. Eculizumab was well tolerated with no new safety concerns. No significant difference
in treatment failure rate was observed between eculizumab (9.8%) and SOC (13.7%;
P = .760). To determine whether data assessment assumptions affected study outâ
come, biopsies were reanalyzed by central pathologists using clinical information. The
resulting treatment failure rates were 11.8% and 21.6% for the eculizumab and SOC
groups, respectively (nominal P = .288). When reassessment included grade I AMR,
the treatment failure rates were 11.8% (eculizumab) and 29.4% (SOC; nominal
P = .048). This finding suggests a potential benefit for eculizumab compared with
SOC in preventing acute AMR in recipients sensitized to their livingâdonor kidney

How does the replacement of rice flour with flours of higher nutritional quality impact the texture and sensory profile and acceptance of gluten-free chocolate cakes?
Gluten-free bakery products usually use rice flour as substitute for wheat flour. This paper aims to evaluate whether and how the substitution of rice flour for sorghum and teff flour changes the overall acceptance, texture and sensory profile of gluten-free chocolate cakes. An experimental design composed of three factors (rice, sorghum and teff flours) was developed, and formulations were analysed by acceptance test and fibre content. Four formulations were submitted to sensory descriptive analysis. The formulations did not show significant differences in the overall acceptance although the sensory profile has changed. The texture was affected by the type of flour, being the optimised formulation the softer among the samples. From these data, it can be concluded that it is possible to replace rice flour with sorghum and teff flour in chocolate cake formulations, since the change in the sensory profile did not affect the acceptance of the products.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Supersymmetric effects on Forward Backward asymmetries of
Leptonic and semi-leptonic rare decays of B-mesons are very clean (both
theoretically and experimentally) signatures of any new physics beyond the
Standard Model (SM). More specifically the decay \btokll has been theoretically
observed to be very sensitive to new physics as the Forward Backward (FB)
asymmetry in this decay mode vanishes in the SM. Supersymmetry, however,
predicts a non-vanishing value of this asymmetry. In this work we will study
the polarized lepton pair FB asymmetry, i.e. the FB asymmetry of the lepton
when one (or both) final state lepton(s) are polarized. We will study these
