Transport in the Heavy Fermion Superconductor UPt3
We report new theoretical results and analysis for the transport properties
of superconducting UPt3 based on the leading models for the pairing symmetry.
We use Fermi surface data and the measured inelastic scattering rate to show
that the low-temperature thermal conductivity and transverse sound attenuation
in the A and B phase of UPt3 are in excellent agreement with pairing states
belonging to the two-dimensional orbital E2u representation.Comment: 2 pages, contribution at Int. Conf. LT-22, Helsinki, Finland, 4-11

High frequency sound in superfluid 3He-B
We present measurements of the absolute phase velocity of transverse and
longitudinal sound in superfluid 3He-B at low temperature, extending from the
imaginary squashing mode to near pair-breaking. Changes in the transverse phase
velocity near pair-breaking have been explained in terms of an order parameter
collective mode that arises from f-wave pairing interactions, the so-called
J=4- mode. Using these measurements, we establish lower bounds on the energy
gap in the B-phase. Measurement of attenuation of longitudinal sound at low
temperature and energies far above the pair-breaking threshold, are in
agreement with the lower bounds set on pair-breaking. Finally, we discuss our
estimations for the strength of the f-wave pairing interactions and the Fermi
liquid parameter, F4s.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted to J. Low Temp. Phy

Thermodynamic Potential for Superfluid 3He in Aerogel
We present a free energy functional for superfluid 3He in the presence of
homogeneously distributed impurity disorder which extends the Ginzburg-Landau
free energy functional to all temperatures. We use the new free energy
functional to calculate the thermodynamic potential, entropy, heat capacity and
density of states for the B-phase of superfluid 3He in homogeneous, isotropic
aerogel.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Reply to ``Comment on `Magnetic field effects on neutron diffraction in the antiferromagnetic phase of '''
Fak, van Dijk and Wills (FDW) question our interpretation of elastic
neutron-scattering experiments in the antiferromagnetic phase of UPt_3. They
state that our analysis is incorrect because we average over magnetic
structures that are disallowed by symmetry. We disagree with FDW and reply to
their criticism. FDW also point out that we have mistaken the magnetic field
direction in the experiment reported by N. H. van Dijk et al. [Phys. Rev. B 58,
3186 (1998)]. We correct this error and note that our previous conclusion is
also valid for the correct field orientation.Comment: 3 page
Imaginary Squashing Mode Spectroscopy of Helium Three B
We have made precision measurements of the frequency of a collective mode of
the superfluid 3He-B order parameter, the J=2- imaginary squashing mode.
Measurements were performed at multiple pressures using interference of
transverse sound in an acoustic cavity. Transverse waves propagate in the
vicinity of this order parameter mode owing to off-resonant coupling. At the
crossing of the sound mode and the order parameter mode, the sound wave is
strongly attenuated. We use both velocity and attenuation measurements to
determine precise values of the mode frequency with a resolution between 0.1%
and 0.25%.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to proceedings of Quantum Fluids and

Antiferromagnetic Domains and Superconductivity in UPt3
We explore the response of an unconventional superconductor to spatially
inhomogeneous antiferromagnetism (SIAFM). Symmetry allows the superconducting
order parameter in the E-representation models for UPt3 to couple directly to
the AFM order parameter. The Ginzburg-Landau equations for coupled
superconductivity and SIAFM are solved numerically for two possible SIAFM
configurations: (I) abutting antiferromagnetic domains of uniform size, and
(II) quenched random disorder of `nanodomains' in a uniform AFM background. We
discuss the contributions to the free energy, specific heat, and order
parameter for these models. Neither model provides a satisfactory account of
experiment, but results from the two models differ significantly. Our results
demonstrate that the response of an E_{2u} superconductor to SIAFM is strongly
dependent on the spatial dependence of AFM order; no conclusion can be drawn
regarding the compatibility of E_{2u} superconductivity with UPt3 that is
independent of assumptions on the spatial dependence of AFMComment: 12 pages, 13 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Magnetic Field Effects on Neutron Diffraction in the Antiferromagnetic Phase of
We discuss possible magnetic structures in UPt based on our analysis of
elastic neutron-scattering experiments in high magnetic fields at temperatures
. The existing experimental data can be explained by a single-{\bf q}
antiferromagnetic structure with three independent domains. For modest in-plane
spin-orbit interactions, the Zeeman coupling between the antiferromagnetic
order parameter and the magnetic field induces a rotation of the magnetic
moments, but not an adjustment of the propagation vector of the magnetic order.
A triple-{\bf q} magnetic structure is also consistent with neutron
experiments, but in general leads to a non-uniform magnetization in the
crystal. New experiments could decide between these structures.Comment: 5 figures included in the tex
Transport and the Order Parameter of Superconducting UPt3
We calculate the ultrasonic absorption and the thermal conductivity in the
superconducting state of UPt as functions of temperature and direction of
propagation and polarization. Two leading candidates for the superconducting
order parameter are considered: the and representations. Both
can fit the data except for the ultrasonic absorption in the phase. To do
that, it is necessary to suppose that the system has only a single domain, and
that must be chosen as the most favorable one. However, the theory
requires fine-tuning of parameters to fit the low temperature thermal
conductivity. Thus, transport data favor the theory. Measurements of
the thermal conductivity as a function of pressure at low temperature could
help to further distinguish the two theories.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Effect of diffusive boundaries on surface superconductivity in unconventional superconductors
Boundary conditions for a superconducting order parameter at a diffusive
scattering boundary are derived from microscopic theory. The results indicate
that for all but isotropic gap functions the diffusive boundary almost
completely suppresses surface superconductivity in the Ginzburg-Landau regime.
This indicates that in anisotropic superconductors surface superconductivity
can only be observed for surface normals along high symmetry directions where
atomically clean surfaces can be cleaved.Comment: Latex File, 12 pages, 2 Postscript figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. B
