Evidence of Early Enrichment of the Galactic Disk by Large-Scale Winds
Large-scale homogeneous surveys of Galactic stars may indicate that the
elemental abundance gradient evolves with cosmic time, a phenomenon that was
not foreseen in existing models of Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). If the
phenomenon is confirmed in future studies, we show that this effect, at least
in part, is due to large-scale winds that once enriched the disk. These set up
the steep abundance gradient in the inner disk (R <14 kpc). At the close of the
wind phase, chemical enrichment through accretion of metal-poor material from
the halo onto the disk gradually reduced the metallicity of the inner region,
whereas a slow increase in the metallicity proceeded beyond the solar circle.
Our "wind+infall" model accounts for flattening of the abundance gradient in
the inner disk, in good agreement with observations. Accordingly, we propose
that enrichment by large-scale winds is a crucial factor for chemical evolution
in the disk. We anticipate that rapid flattening of the abundance gradient is
the hallmarks of disk galaxies with significant central bulges.Comment: 9 pages including 5 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

Magnetization of La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+ delta) (0 < x < 0.5) and observation of novel memory effects
We have studied the magnetization of a series of spin-charge ordered
La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+delta) single crystals with 0 < x < 0.5. For fields applied
parallel to the ab plane there is a large irreversibility below a temperature
T(F1) ~ 50 K and a smaller irreversibility that persists up to near the charge
ordering temperature. We observed a novel memory effect in the thermo-remnant
magnetization across the entire doping range. We found that these materials
retain a memory of the temperature at which an external field was removed, and
that there is a pronounced increase in the thermo-remnant magnetization when
the system is warmed through a spin reorientation transition.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure
Magnetically Mediated Transparent Conductors: InO doped with Mo
First-principles band structure investigations of the electronic, optical and
magnetic properties of Mo-doped InO reveal the vital role of magnetic
interactions in determining both the electrical conductivity and the
Burstein-Moss shift which governs optical absorption. We demonstrate the
advantages of the transition metal doping which results in smaller effective
mass, larger fundamental band gap and better overall optical transmission in
the visible -- as compared to commercial Sn-doped InO. Similar behavior
is expected upon doping with other transition metals opening up an avenue for
the family of efficient transparent conductors mediated by magnetic
interactions
Vehicle test report: Battronic pickup truck
An electric pickup truck was tested to characterize certain parameters and to provide baseline data that can be used for the comparison of improved batteries that may be incorporated into the vehicle at a later time. The vehicle tests were concentrated on the electrical drive subsystem; i.e., the batteries, controller, and motor. The tests included coastdowns to characterize the road load and range evaluations for both cyclic and constant speed conditions. A qualitative evaluation of the vehicle's performance was made by comparing its constant speed range performance with other vehicles
The Temperature Evolution of the Out-of-Plane Correlation Lengths of Charge-Stripe Ordered La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4)
The temperature dependence of the magnetic order of stripe-ordered
La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4) is investigated by neutron diffraction. Upon cooling,
the widths if the magnetic Bragg peaks are observed to broaden. The degree of
broadening is found to be very different for l = odd-integer and l =
even-integer magnetic peaks. We argue that the observed behaviour is a result
of competition between magnetic and charge order.Comment: 3 figure
