Qualitative Criterion for Interception in a Pursuit/Evasion Game
A qualitative account is given of a differential pursuit/evasion game. A
criterion for the existence of an intercept solution is obtained using future
cones that contain all attainable trajectories of target or interceptor
originating from an initial position. A sufficient and necessary conditon that
an opportunity to intercept always exist is that, after some initial time, the
future cone of the target be contained within the future cone of the
interceptor. The sufficient condition may be regarded as a kind of Nash

Interplay of charge and spin correlations in nickel perovskites
Analyzing the motion of low--spin holes in a high--spin
background, we derive a sort of generalized t--J Hamiltonian for the planes of Sr--doped nickelates. In addition to the rather complex
carrier--spin and spin--spin couplings we take into account the coupling of the
doped holes to in--plane oxygen breathing modes by a Holstein--type interaction
term. Because of strong magnetic confinement effects the holes are nearly
entirely prelocalized and the electron--phonon coupling becomes much more
effective in forming polarons than in the isostructural cuprates. In the light
of recent experiments on we discuss how the variety of
the observed transport and charge/spin--ordering phenomena can be qualitatively

Hsp90 as a Gatekeeper of Tumor Angiogenesis: Clinical Promise and Potential Pitfalls
Tumor vascularization is an essential modulator of early tumor growth, progression, and therapeutic outcome. Although antiangiogenic treatments appear promising, intrinsic and acquired tumor resistance contributes to treatment failure. Clinical inhibition of the molecular chaperone heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) provides an opportunity to target multiple aspects of this signaling resiliency, which may elicit more robust and enduring tumor repression relative to effects elicited by specifically targeted agents. This review highlights several primary effectors of angiogenesis modulated by Hsp90 and describes the clinical challenges posed by the redundant circuitry of these pathways. The four main topics addressed include (1) Hsp90-mediated regulation of HIF/VEGF signaling, (2) chaperone-dependent regulation of HIF-independent VEGF-mediated angiogenesis, (3) Hsp90-dependent targeting of key proangiogenic receptor tyrosine kinases and modulation of drug resistance, and (4) consideration of factors such as tumor microenvironment that pose several challenges for the clinical efficacy of anti-angiogenic therapy and Hsp90-targeted strategies
Knowledge Cartography for Controversies: The Iraq Debate
In analysing controversies and debates—which would include reviewing a literature in order to plan research, or assessing intelligence to formulate policy—there is no one worldview which can be mapped, for instance as a single, coherent concept map. The cartographic challenge is to show which facts are agreed and contested, and the different kinds of narrative links that use facts as evidence to define the nature of the problem, what to do about it, and why. We will use the debate around the invasion of Iraq to demonstrate the methodology of using a knowledge mapping tool to extract key ideas from source materials, in order to classify and connect them within and across a set of perspectives of interest to the analyst. We reflect on the value that this approach adds, and how it relates to other argument mapping approaches
Ab initio calculations of the hydrogen bond
Recent x-ray Compton scattering experiments in ice have provided useful
information about the quantum nature of the interaction between HO
monomers. The hydrogen bond is characterized by a certain amount of charge
transfer which could be determined in a Compton experiment. We use ab-initio
simulations to investigate the hydrogen bond in HO structures by
calculating the Compton profile and related quantities in three different
systems, namely the water dimer, a cluster containing 12 water molecules and
the ice crystal. We show how to extract estimates of the charge transfer from

Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering from Valence Excitations in Insulating Copper-Oxides
We report resonant inelastic x-ray measurements of insulating LaCuO
and SrCuOCl taken with the incident energy tuned near the Cu K
absorption edge. We show that the spectra are well described in a shakeup
picture in 3rd order perturbation theory which exhibits both incoming and
outgoing resonances, and demonstrate how to extract a spectral function from
the raw data. We conclude by showing {\bf q}-dependent measurements of the

The Liberal Playground: Susan Isaacs, Psychoanalysis and Progressive Education in the Interwar Era
The Cambridge Malting House, an experimental school, serves here as a case study for investigating the tensions within 1920s liberal elites between their desire to abandon some Victorian and Edwardian sets of values in favour of more democratic ones, and at the same time their insistence on preserving themselves as an integral part of the English upper class. Susan Isaacs, the manager of the Malting House, provided the parents – some of whom were the most famous scientists and intellectuals of their age – with an opportunity to fulfil their ‘fantasy’ of bringing up children in total freedom. In retrospect, however, she deeply criticized those from their milieu for not fully understanding the real socio-cultural implications of their ideological decision to make independence and freedom the core values in their children’s education. Thus, 1920s progressive education is a paradigmatic case study of the cultural and ideological inner contradictions within liberal thought in the interwar era. The article also shows how psychoanalysis – which attracted many progressive educators – played a crucial role in providing liberals of all sorts with a new language to articulate their political visions, but, at the same time, explored the limits of the liberal discourse as a whole
The Online Dissemination of Nature–Health Concepts: Lessons from Sentiment Analysis of Social Media Relating to “Nature-Deficit Disorder”
Evidence continues to grow supporting the idea that restorative environments, green exercise, and nature-based activities positively impact human health. Nature-deficit disorder, a journalistic term proposed to describe the ill effects of people's alienation from nature, is not yet formally recognized as a medical diagnosis. However, over the past decade, the phrase has been enthusiastically taken up by some segments of the lay public. Social media, such as Twitter, with its opportunities to gather "big data" related to public opinions, offers a medium for exploring the discourse and dissemination around nature-deficit disorder and other nature-health concepts. In this paper, we report our experience of collecting more than 175,000 tweets, applying sentiment analysis to measure positive, neutral or negative feelings, and preliminarily mapping the impact on dissemination. Sentiment analysis is currently used to investigate the repercussions of events in social networks, scrutinize opinions about products and services, and understand various aspects of the communication in Web-based communities. Based on a comparison of nature-deficit-disorder "hashtags" and more generic nature hashtags, we make recommendations for the better dissemination of public health messages through changes to the framing of messages. Group Chase and Escape
We describe here a new concept of one group chasing another, called "group
chase and escape", by presenting a simple model. We will show that even a
simple model can demonstrate rather rich and complex behavior. In particular,
there are cases in which an optimal number of chasers exists for a given number
of escapees (or targets) to minimize the cost of catching all targets. We have
also found an indication of self-organized spatial structures formed by both
