    Properties of Phase transitions of a Higher Order

    The following is a thermodynamic analysis of a III order (and some aspects of a IV order) phase transition. Such a transition can occur in a superconductor if the normal state is a diamagnet. The equation for a phase boundary in an H-T (H is the magnetic field, T, the temperature) plane is derived. by considering two possible forms of the gradient energy, it is possible to construct a field theory which describes a III or a IV order transition and permits a study of thermal fluctuations and inhomogeneous order parameters.Comment: 13 pages, revtex, no figure

    Hypercholesterolemia, a well-known cardiovascular risk factor, is associated with prolonged action potential duration, longer QTc intervals (rate controlled QT interval), suggested that Hypercholesterolemia may have a direct effect on ventricular repolarization. Hypercholesterolemia was induced in rabbits and L-arginine was given orally to animals for sixteen weeks. The isoproterenol was injected in all the animals to produce electrocardiographic changes. ECG was recorded in lead II at start of study, after hypercholesterolemic diet and/ or L-arginine supplementation

    As people of every walk of life are using Internet for various purposes there is growing evidence of proliferation of sensitive information. Security and privacy of data became an important concern. For this reason privacy preserving data mining (PPDM) has been an active research area. PPDM is a process discovering knowledge from voluminous data while protecting sensitive information. In this paper we explore the present state-of-the-art of secure and privacy preserving data mining algorithms or techniques which will help in real world usage of enterprise applications. The techniques discussed include randomized method, k-Anonymity, l-Diversity, t-Closeness, m-Privacy and other PPDM approaches. This paper also focuses on SQL injection attacks and prevention measures. The paper provides research insights into the areas of secure and privacy preserving data mining techniques or algorithms besides presenting gaps in the research that can be used to plan future research

    Organic acids as cloud condensation nuclei: Laboratory studies of highly soluble and insoluble species

    International audienceThe ability of sub-micron-sized organic acid particles to act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) has been examined at room temperature using a newly constructed continuous-flow, thermal-gradient diffusion chamber (TGDC). The organic acids studied were: oxalic, malonic, glutaric, oleic and stearic. The CCN properties of the highly soluble acids - oxalic, malonic and glutaric - match very closely Köhler theory predictions which assume full dissolution of the dry particle and a surface tension of the growing droplet equal to that of water. In particular, for supersaturations between 0.3 and 0.6, agreement between the dry particle diameter which gives 50% activation and that calculated from Köhler theory is to within 3nm on average. In the course of the experiments, considerable instability of glutaric acid particles was observed as a function of time and there is evidence that they fragment to some degree to smaller particles. Stearic acid and oleic acid, which are both highly insoluble in water, did not activate at supersaturations of 0.6% with dry diameters up to 140nm. Finally, to validate the performance of the TGDC, we present results for the activation of ammonium sulfate particles that demonstrate good agreement with Köhler theory if solution non-ideality is considered. Our findings support earlier studies in the literature that showed highly soluble organics to be CCN active but insoluble species to be largely inactive

    Efficacy of Fungicides for Control of White Mold (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum Lib.) De Bary in Lima Bean

    White mold of lima bean (Phaseolous lunatus) caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a major disease in India. Isolates of the pathogen from different region of Uttar Pradesh were assayed both in vitro and in the greenhouse (in vivo) for their sensitivity to eight commercially available fungicides, viz., dithiocarbamic acid, carbendazim, ziram, phenylthiourea, carboxin + dithiocarbamic acid, difenoconazole, hydrogen sulphide, and mancozeb. Phenylthiourea and difenoconazole were found to be most effective and these inhibited radial growth of the test organism a level of to 71.5% and 70.5%, respectively. These two fungicides were also found as most promising in controlling the disease under greenhouse conditions, reducing disease severity to 0.14% and 0.22%, respectively compared to the control where it was 18.9%

    Anomalous Raman scattering from phonons and electrons of superconducting FeSe0.82_{0.82}

    We report interesting anomalies in the temperature dependent Raman spectra of FeSe0.82_{0.82} measured from 3K to 300K in the spectral range from 60 to 1800 cm1^{-1} and determine their origin using complementary first-principles density functional calculations. A phonon mode near 100 cm1^{-1} exhibits a sharp increase by \sim 5% in frequency below a temperature Ts_s (\sim 100 K) attributed to strong spin-phonon coupling and onset of short-range antiferromagnetic order. In addition, two high frequency modes are observed at 1350 cm1^{-1} and 1600 cm1^{-1}, attributed to electronic Raman scattering from (x2y2x^2-y^2)to xzxz / yzyz dd-orbitals of Fe.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Acoustic horn design for joining metallic wire with flat metallic sheet by ultrasonic vibrations

    Ultrasonic Metal Welding is a green manufacturing technique and one of the most advanced solid state welding processes in which similar or dissimilar metallic components are joined by the application of high frequency vibrations (> 20 kHz) and pressure. Ultrasonic metal welding is accompanied by slip and plastic deformation so that the base metals being welded will not melt and in turn forms a homogenous coalescence of two metals at the joining area so that the joint retains the parent metal properties. The major problem faced by the industries using ultrasonic metal welding process is the poor weld quality and weld strength. The design of acoustic horn or sonotrode plays a dominant role in producing quality welds. The primary function of sonotrode is to vibrate at a level required for welding and also to transmit the vibration energy to the point where welding of metals takes place. For producing quality welds, the vibration energy is to be transmitted to the weld interface without much loss. Therefore, there is a need for accurate design of sonotrodes in ultrasonic metal welding process. This work focuses on designing a stepped sonotrode used for joining metallic wire with metallic sheet based on significant design parameters such as amplitude gain and von Mises stress factor using modal and harmonic analysis. Experimental trials are conducted using the stepped sonotrodes and the effectiveness of the designed sonotrodes is evaluated based on improvement of strength of the joint in tension

    The admissible tsunamigenic source region of 24 September 2013 land-based earthquake application of backward ray tracing technique

    A minor tsunami of about 50 cm was generated along the coast of Qurayat near Makran subduction zone in the Arabian Sea due to the 24 September 2013 Pakistan earthquake of magnitude 7.6 Mw(mB),although its source was ~200 km far inland of the Makran trench. The real time sea level observation network in the Arabian Sea recorded minor tsunami arrivals. In an attempt to explain the mechanism of this unusual tsunami, we use backward ray tracing technique to map the admissible region of tsunamigenic source. Basically, in this technique the ray equations are integrated starting from the specific locations of tsunami observations, in all possible directions. The known travel time of the initial waves to the respective tide gauges and tsunami buoys is used in this method. Backward wave front is constructed by joining all endpoints of the rays from each of the locations. The region where the envelope of all backward wave fronts converges is considered as the source of the tsunami, which is ~470 km from the earthquake epicentre with the location at 24.8 N and 61.5E. The admissible region identified is an undersea section between Chabahar and Gwadar, where a mud island had appeared subsequent to this earthquake. Convergence of the tsunami source zone and location of the mud island suggest that the sudden uplift must have caused the tsunam

    Background: Strong surveillance systems which include both active and passive surveillance are the important steps to halt a disease outbreak by early case detection and management, which helps in breaking the chain of transmission. The main aim of this article is to share our experience regarding the active and passive surveillance done during COVID 19 spread in the year 2021.Methods: The early case detection of COVID 19 cases through active and passive surveillance was slightly different from the usual methods that are carried out for regular known communicable diseases. Active surveillance was done round the clock by screening of all vehicles entering the union-territory of Puducherry and by house-to-house survey. Passive surveillance was carried out by screening of various symptomatic patients attending to hospitals which needed motivation of health personnel as well as awareness among the general public.Results: Out of 12 Govt. PHCs (3,30,000population) where active and passive surveillance was conducted, the total number of individuals referred to designated COVID centre by active and passive surveillance is 30 and 110 respectively for COVID testing and further management.Conclusions: Active and Passive surveillance plays a major role in early case detection and prevention of disease spread in COVID-19 pandemic
