    Sequences of Willmore surfaces

In this paper we develop the theory of Willmore sequences for Willmore surfaces in the 4-sphere. We show that under appropriate conditions this sequence has to terminate. In this case the Willmore surface either is the twistor projection of a holomorphic curve into complex projective space or the inversion of a minimal surface with planar ends in 4-space. These results give a unified explanation of previous work on the characterization of Willmore spheres and Willmore tori with non-trivial normal bundles by various authors.Comment: 10 page

Curved Flats, Pluriharmonic Maps and Constant Curvature Immersions into Pseudo-Riemannian Space Forms

We study two aspects of the loop group formulation for isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of space forms. The first aspect is to examine the loop group maps along different ranges of the loop parameter. This leads to various equivalences between global isometric immersion problems among different space forms and pseudo-Riemannian space forms. As a corollary, we obtain a non-immersibility theorem for spheres into certain pseudo-Riemannian spheres and hyperbolic spaces. The second aspect pursued is to clarify the relationship between the loop group formulation of isometric immersions of space forms and that of pluriharmonic maps into symmetric spaces. We show that the objects in the first class are, in the real analytic case, extended pluriharmonic maps into certain symmetric spaces which satisfy an extra reality condition along a totally real submanifold. We show how to construct such pluriharmonic maps for general symmetric spaces from curved flats, using a generalised DPW method.Comment: 21 Pages, reference adde

Conformal maps from a 2-torus to the 4-sphere

We study the space of conformal immersions of a 2-torus into the 4-sphere. The moduli space of generalized Darboux transforms of such an immersed torus has the structure of a Riemann surface, the spectral curve. This Riemann surface arises as the zero locus of the determinant of a holomorphic family of Dirac type operators parameterized over the complexified dual torus. The kernel line bundle of this family over the spectral curve describes the generalized Darboux transforms of the conformally immersed torus. If the spectral curve has finite genus the kernel bundle can be extended to the compactification of the spectral curve and we obtain a linear 2-torus worth of algebraic curves in projective 3-space. The original conformal immersion of the 2-torus is recovered as the orbit under this family of the point at infinity on the spectral curve projected to the 4-sphere via the twistor fibration.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figure

Surfaces immersed in su(N+1) Lie algebras obtained from the CP^N sigma models

We study some geometrical aspects of two dimensional orientable surfaces arrising from the study of CP^N sigma models. To this aim we employ an identification of R^(N(N+2)) with the Lie algebra su(N+1) by means of which we construct a generalized Weierstrass formula for immersion of such surfaces. The structural elements of the surface like its moving frame, the Gauss-Weingarten and the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations are expressed in terms of the solution of the CP^N model defining it. Further, the first and second fundamental forms, the Gaussian curvature, the mean curvature vector, the Willmore functional and the topological charge of surfaces are expressed in terms of this solution. We present detailed implementation of these results for surfaces immersed in su(2) and su(3) Lie algebras.Comment: 32 pages, 1 figure; changes: major revision of presentation, clarifications adde

On semidiscrete constant mean curvature surfaces and their associated families

The present paper studies semidiscrete surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space within the framework of integrable systems. In particular, we investigate semidiscrete surfaces with constant mean curvature along with their associated families. The notion of mean curvature introduced in this paper is motivated by a recently developed curvature theory for quadrilateral meshes equipped with unit normal vectors at the vertices, and extends previous work on semidiscrete surfaces. In the situation of vanishing mean curvature, the associated families are defined via a Weierstrass representation. For the general cmc case, we introduce a Lax pair representation that directly defines associated families of cmc surfaces, and is connected to a semidiscrete [Formula: see text] -Gordon equation. Utilizing this theory we investigate semidiscrete Delaunay surfaces and their connection to elliptic billiards

Complex surfaces of constant mean curvature fibered by minimal surfaces

We define complex constant mean curvature immersions in complex three space using a natural extension of constant mean curvature immersions in Euclidean three space via loop group techniques. We then discuss the fundamental properties of these complex constant mean curvature immersions. In particular, we prove that these immersions are doubly ruled by holomorphic null curves. We present a construction of minimal immersions from constant mean curvature immersions in Euclidean three space via the associated complex constant mean curvature immersions
