The estimation of black-hole masses in distant radio galaxies
We have estimated the masses of the central supermassive black holes of 2442
radio galaxies froma catalog compiled using data from the NED, SDSS, and CATS
databases. Mass estimates based on optical photometry and radio data are
compared. Relationships between the mass of the central black hole
and the redshift are constructed for both wavelength ranges. The
distribution of the galaxies in these diagrams and systematic effects
influencing estimation of the black-hole parameters are discussed.
Upperenvelope cubic regression fits are obtained using the maximum estimates of
the black-hole masses. The optical and radio upper envelopes show similar
behavior, and have very similar peaks in position, , and
amplitude, = 9.4. This is consistent with a model in which the
growth of the supermassive black holes is self-regulating, with this redshift
corresponding to the epoch when the accretion-flow phase begins to end and the
nuclear activity falls off.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) geological site characterization report, Big Hill Salt Dome
Geological and geophysical analyses of the Big Hill Salt Dome were performed to determine the suitability of this site for use in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). Development of 140 million barrels (MMB) of storage capacity in the Big Hill Salt Dome is planned as part of the SPR expansion to achieve 750 MMB of storage capacity. Objectives of the study were to: (1) Acquire, evaluate, and interpret existing data pertinent to geological characterization of the Big Hill Dome; (2) Characterize the surface and near-surface geology and hydrology; (3) Characterize the geology and hydrology of the overlying cap rock; (4) Define the geometry and geology of the dome; (5) Determine the feasibility of locating and constructing 14 10-MMB storage caverns in the south portion of the dome; and (6) Assess the effects of natural hazards on the SPR site. Recommendations are included. (DMC

Site geotechnical considerations for expansion of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to one billion barrels
Eight Gulf Coast salt domes have emerged as candidate sites for possible expansion of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to one billion barrels. Two existing SPR sites, Big Hill, TX, and Weeks Island, LA, are among the eight that are being considered. To achieve the billion barrel capacity, some 25 new leached caverns would be constructed, and would probably be established in two separate sites in Louisiana and Texas because of distribution requirements. Geotechnical factors involved in siting studies have centered first and foremost on cavern integrity and environmental acceptability, once logistical suitability is realized. Other factors have involved subsidence and flooding potential, loss of coastal marshlands, seismicity, brine injection well utility, and co-use by multiple operators. 5 refs., 11 figs., 2 tabs
