Comparative Planetary Atmospheres: Models of TrES-1 and HD209458b
We present new self-consistent atmosphere models for transiting planets
TrES-1 and HD209458b. The planets were recently observed with the Spitzer Space
Telescope in bands centered on 4.5 and 8.0 m, for TrES-1, and 24 m,
for HD209458b. We find that standard solar metallicity models fit the
observations for HD209458b. For TrES-1, which has an T_eff ~300 K cooler, we
find that models with a metallicity 3-5 times enhanced over solar abundances
can match the 1 error bar at 4.5 m and 2 at 8.0m.
Models with solar abundances that included energy deposition into the
stratosphere give fluxes that fall within the 2 error bars in both
bands. The best-fit models for both planets assume that reradiation of absorbed
stellar flux occurs over the entire planet. For all models of both planets we
predict planet/star flux ratios in other Spitzer bandpasses.Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal Letters, May 17, 200
SWAS observations of comet 9P/Tempel 1 and Deep Impact
On 4 July 2005 at 1:52 UT the Deep Impact mission successfully completed its
goal to hit the nucleus of 9P/Tempel 1 with an impactor, forming a crater on
the nucleus and ejecting material into the coma of the comet. The 370 kg
impactor collided with the sunlit side of the nucleus with a relative velocity
of 10.2 km/s. NASA's Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) observed the
1(10)-1(01) ortho-water ground-state rotational transition in comet 9P/Tempel 1
before, during, and after the impact. No excess emission from the impact was
detected by SWAS. However, the water production rate of the comet showed large
natural variations of more than a factor of three during the weeks before the

Human Cortical Traveling Waves: Dynamical Properties and Correlations with Responses
The spatiotemporal behavior of human EEG oscillations is investigated. Traveling waves in the alpha and theta ranges are found to be common in both prestimulus and poststimulus EEG activity. The dynamical properties of these waves, including their speeds, directions, and durations, are systematically characterized for the first time, and the results show that there are significant changes of prestimulus spontaneous waves in the presence of an external stimulus. Furthermore, the functional relevance of these waves is examined by studying how they are correlated with reaction times on a single trial basis; prestimulus alpha waves traveling in the frontal-to-occipital direction are found to be most correlated to reaction speeds. These findings suggest that propagating waves of brain oscillations might be involved in mediating long-range interactions between widely distributed parts of human cortex
