Feasibility study of aileron and spoiler control systems for large horizontal axis wind turbines
The feasibility of using aileron or spoiler controls as alternates to pitch control for large horizontal axis wind turbines was studied. The NASA Mod-0 100 kw machine was used as the basis for the study. Specific performance studies were conducted for 20% chord ailerons over the outboard 30% span, and for 10% chord spoilers over the same portion of the span. Both control systems utilized control deflections up to 60 deg. Results of the study show that either ailerons or spoilers can provide the control necessary to limit turbine power in high wind conditions. The aileron system, as designed, provides overspeed protection at hurricane wind speeds, low wind speed starting torque of 778 N-m (574 ft. lb) at 3.6 m/sec, and a 1.3 to 1.5% increase in annual energy compared to a fixed pitch rotor. The aileron control system preliminary design study includes aileron loads analysis and the design of a failsafe flyweight actuator for overspeed protection in the event of a hydraulic system failure
Coupled-barrier diffusion: the case of oxygen in silicon
Oxygen migration in silicon corresponds to an apparently simple jump between
neighboring bridge sites. Yet, extensive theoretical calculations have so far
produced conflicting results and have failed to provide a satisfactory account
of the observed eV activation energy. We report a comprehensive set of
first-principles calculations that demonstrate that the seemingly simple oxygen
jump is actually a complex process involving coupled barriers and can be
properly described quantitatively in terms of an energy hypersurface with a
``saddle ridge'' and an activation energy of eV. Earlier

Linear Probability Models of the Demand for Attributes with an Empirical Application to Estimating the Preferences of Legislators
This paper formulates and estimates a rigorously-justified linear probability model of binary choices over alternatives characterized by unobserved attributes. The model is applied to estimate preferences of congressmen as expressed in their votes on bills. The effective dimension of the attribute space characterizing votes is larger than what has been estimated in recent influential studies of congressional voting by Poole and Rosenthal. Congressmen vote on more than ideology. Issue-specific attributes are an important determinant of congressional" voting patterns. The estimated dimension is too large for the median voter model to describe congressional voting
Cyclotomic integers, fusion categories, and subfactors
Dimensions of objects in fusion categories are cyclotomic integers, hence
number theoretic results have implications in the study of fusion categories
and finite depth subfactors. We give two such applications. The first
application is determining a complete list of numbers in the interval (2,
76/33) which can occur as the Frobenius-Perron dimension of an object in a
fusion category. The smallest number on this list is realized in a new fusion
category which is constructed in the appendix written by V. Ostrik, while the
others are all realized by known examples. The second application proves that
in any family of graphs obtained by adding a 2-valent tree to a fixed graph,
either only finitely many graphs are principal graphs of subfactors or the
family consists of the A_n or D_n Dynkin diagrams. This result is effective,
and we apply it to several families arising in the classification of subfactors

Design considerations for attaining 250-knot test velocities at the aircraft landing dynamics facility
Preliminary design studies are presented which consider the important parameters in providing 250 knot test velocities at the Aircraft Landing Dynamics Facility. Four major components of this facility are: the hydraulic jet catapult, the test carriage structure, the reaction turning bucket, and the wheels. Using the hydraulic-jet catapult characteristics, a target design point was selected and a carriage structure was sized to meet the required strength requirements. The preliminary design results indicate that to attain 250 knot test velocities for a given hydraulic jet catapult system, a carriage mass of 25,424 kg (56,000 lbm.) cannot be exceeded
Squeezed-light generation in a nonlinear planar waveguide with a periodic corrugation
Two-mode nonlinear interaction (second-harmonic and second-subharmonic
generation) in a planar waveguide with a small periodic corrugation at the
surface is studied. Scattering of the interacting fields on the corrugation
leads to constructive interference that enhances the nonlinear process provided
that all the interactions are phase matched. Conditions for the overall phase
matching are found. Compared with a perfectly quasi-phase-matched waveguide,
better values of squeezing as well as higher intensities are reached under
these conditions. Procedure for finding optimum values of parameters for
squeezed-light generation is described.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figure

Native American Children and Their Reports of Hope: Construct Validation of the Children's Hope Scale
Child reports of hope continue to be utilized as predictors of positive adjustment; however, the utilization of the hope construct has not been assessed within the culturally diverse Native American child group. The present study investigated the applicability of the Hope theory among 96 Native American children in the Midwest. Measures included the Children’s Hope Scale and a Hope Interview. Native American children in the current sample appear to conceptualize hope as a way to reach goals as did the children in the normative sample. Results from the factor analysis demonstrate that the factor structure found in the current study was similar to the factor structure found in the standardization sample. Because of the similar Hope theory conceptualization and factor structure, interventions focused on the positive psychology construct of hope may be applicable within a Native American child population
Stable spinning optical solitons in three dimensions
We introduce spatiotemporal spinning solitons (vortex tori) of the
three-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation with focusing cubic and
defocusing quintic nonlinearities. The first ever found completely stable
spatiotemporal vortex solitons are demonstrated. A general conclusion is that
stable spinning solitons are possible as a result of competition between
