Growth or decline in the Church of England during the decade of Evangelism: did the Churchmanship of the Bishop matter?
The Decade of Evangelism occupied the attention of the Church of England throughout the 1990s. The present study employs the statistics routinely published by the Church of England in order to assess two matters: the extent to which these statistics suggest that the 43 individual dioceses finished the decade in a stronger or weaker position than they had entered it and the extent to which, according to these statistics, the performance of dioceses led by bishops shaped in the Evangelical tradition differed from the performance of dioceses led by bishops shaped in the Catholic tradition. The data demonstrated that the majority of dioceses were performing less effectively at the end of the decade than at the beginning, in terms of a range of membership statistics, and that the rate of decline varied considerably from one diocese to another. The only exception to the trend was provided by the diocese of London, which experienced some growth. The data also demonstrated that little depended on the churchmanship of the diocesan bishop in shaping diocesan outcomes on the performance indicators employed in the study
The teenage religion and values survey in England and Wales : an overview
The Teenage Religion and Values Survey was conducted throughout the 1990s among young people between the ages of 13 and 15 years. A total of 33,982 young people took part in the survey. As the next phase of this research begins for the twenty-first century this paper looks back at the survey conducted in the 1990s and considers two aspects of the research. First, this paper considers the methodology behind designing such a survey. Second, this paper considers some of the insights generated by the survey under five headings: personality, spiritual health, religious affiliation, belonging without believing, and church leaving
Prayer, personality and happiness: a study among undergraduate students in Wales
In order to examine the association between prayer and happiness, a sample of 131 undergraduate students attending a university in Wales completed three measures: the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, the abbreviated Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised, and prayer frequency assessed on a 5-point scale. The data demonstrated a significant positive correlation between prayer frequency and happiness before controlling for individual differences in personality. After controlling for personality, however, this apparent association vanished
Work-related psychological health and psychological type among lead elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom
Building on a series of recent studies concerned with assessing work-related psychological health and psychological type among various groups of church leaders, this study reports new data provided by 134 Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTS) together with the two scales of the Francis Burnout Inventory (FBI) concerned with emotional exhaustion and satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches reported lower levels of emotional exhaustion and higher levels of satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, there was a higher proportion of extraverts among Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches. There was only a weak association between psychological type and burnout
The Intermediate Line Region and the Baldwin Effect
Statistical investigations of samples of quasars have established that
clusters of properties are correlated. The strongest trends among the
ultraviolet emission-line properties are characterized by the object-to-object
variation of emission from low-velocity gas, the so-called ``intermediate-line
region'' or ILR. The strongest trends among the optical emission-line
properties are characterized by the object-to-object variation of the line
intensity ratio of [O III] 5007 to optical Fe II. Additionally, the strength of
ILR emission correlates with [O III]/Fe II, as well as with radio and X-ray
properties. The fundamental physical parameter driving these related
correlations is not yet identified. Because the variation in the ILR dominates
the variation in the equivalent widths of lines showing the Baldwin effect, it
is important to understand whether the physical parameter underlying this
variation also drives the Baldwin effect or is a primary source of scatter in
the Baldwin effect.Comment: 11 pages, to appear in the proceedings of the meeting on "Quasars as

Welsh language adaptation of the short-form Junior Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised (JEPQR-S)
A sample of 780 pupils attending year four, five, and six classes in Welsh medium primary schools completed a Welsh translation of the short-form Junior Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised. The findings support the satisfactory nature of the psychometric properties of the three ten-item scales designed to measure extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism, together with the ten-item lie scale
A Group of Red, Ly-alpha Emitting, High Redshift Galaxies
We have discovered two new high redshift (z=2.38) galaxies, near the
previously known z=2.38 galaxy 2139-4434 B1 (Francis et al. 1996).
All three galaxies are strong Ly-alpha emitters, and have much redder
continuum colors (I-K about 5) than other optically-selected high redshift
galaxies. We hypothesize that these three galaxies are QSO IIs; radio-quiet
counterparts of high redshift radio galaxies, containing concealed QSO nuclei.
The red colors are most easily modelled by an old (> 0.5 Gyr), massive (> 10E11
solar masses) stellar population. If true, this implies that at least one
galaxy cluster of mass much greater than 3E11 solar masses had collapsed before
redshift five.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, uses aaspp4 style file. Accepted for publication
