Restriction on the energy and luminosity of e+e- storage rings due to beamstrahlung

The role of beamstrahlung in high-energy e+e- storage-ring colliders (SRCs) is examined. Particle loss due to the emission of single energetic beamstrahlung photons is shown to impose a fundamental limit on SRC luminosities at energies 2E_0 >~ 140 GeV for head-on collisions and 2E_0 >~ 40 GeV for crab-waist collisions. With beamstrahlung taken into account, we explore the viability of SRCs in the E_0=240-500 GeV range, which is of interest in the precision study of the Higgs boson. At 2E_0=240 GeV, SRCs are found to be competitive with linear colliders; however, at 2E_0=400-500 GeV, the attainable SRC luminosity would be a factor 15-25 smaller than desired.Comment: Latex, 5 pages. v2 differs only by minor changes is abstract and introduction, one reference is added. v3 corresponds to the paper published in PR

The CLIC Programme: Towards a Staged e+e- Linear Collider Exploring the Terascale : CLIC Conceptual Design Report

This report describes the exploration of fundamental questions in particle physics at the energy frontier with a future TeV-scale e+e- linear collider based on the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) two-beam acceleration technology. A high-luminosity high-energy e+e- collider allows for the exploration of Standard Model physics, such as precise measurements of the Higgs, top and gauge sectors, as well as for a multitude of searches for New Physics, either through direct discovery or indirectly, via high-precision observables. Given the current state of knowledge, following the observation of a 125 GeV Higgs-like particle at the LHC, and pending further LHC results at 8 TeV and 14 TeV, a linear e+e- collider built and operated in centre-of-mass energy stages from a few-hundred GeV up to a few TeV will be an ideal physics exploration tool, complementing the LHC. In this document, an overview of the physics potential of CLIC is given. Two example scenarios are presented for a CLIC accelerator built in three main stages of 500 GeV, 1.4 (1.5) TeV, and 3 TeV, together with operating schemes that will make full use of the machine capacity to explore the physics. The accelerator design, construction, and performance are presented, as well as the layout and performance of the experiments. The proposed staging example is accompanied by cost estimates of the accelerator and detectors and by estimates of operating parameters, such as power consumption. The resulting physics potential and measurement precisions are illustrated through detector simulations under realistic beam conditions.Comment: 84 pages, published as CERN Yellow Report https://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/147522

Hybrid Software Development Approaches in Practice: A European Perspective

    Get PDF
Agile and traditional development approaches are used in combination in todays software development. To improve the understanding and to provide better guidance for selecting appropriate development approaches, it is important to analyze such combinations in practice. Results obtained from an online survey strongly confirm that hybrid development approaches are widely used in industry. Our results show that hybrid development approaches: (i) have become reality for nearly all companies; (ii) are applied to specific projects even in the presence of company-wide policies for process usage; (iii) are neither planned nor designed but emerge from the evolution of different work practices; and, (iv) are consistently used regardless of company size or industry secto

Interictal and postictal cognitive changes in migraine

The question whether symptom-free migraine patients show cognitive impairments compared to matched control subjects is addressed, and also whether migraine patients show transient cognitive impairments induced by an attack. The Neuropsychological Evaluation System (NES2) was administered once in an interictal period and twice within 30 h after different migraine attacks. Since cognitive impairments could be related to attack duration or severity, cognitive performance was compared during a postictal period after sumatriptan use and during a postictal period after habitual nonvasoactive medication use. Twenty migraineurs without aura, 10 migraineurs with aura, and 30 matched headache-free controls participated in the study. During a headache-free period, migraineurs without aura responded as quickly as controls, while migraineurs with aura were slower than controls during all tasks specifically requiring selective attention. These effects were not aggravated by a preceding migraine attack, irrespective of medication use and attack duration

Reference intervals for Sysmex XN hematological parameters as assessed in the Dutch Lifelines cohort

Our aim was to derive reference intervals for all Sysmex XN hematology analyzer parameters. The rationale behind the study was the lack of reference intervals for the XN analyzer cell population data (CPD) and functional parameters. Fresh fasting blood samples from 18,484 participants in the Dutch Lifelines study were analyzed using two automated XN analyzers. Structured health questionnaire data were used to select a subgroup of 15,803 apparently healthy individuals for inclusion in the reference population. The Latent Abnormal Values Exclusion (LAVE) approach was used to reduce the influence of latent diseases in the reference population on the resulting reference intervals. We applied analysis of variance to judge the need for partitioning of the reference intervals by sex or age. We report reference intervals for 105 XN analyzer hematological parameters with and without applying LAVE. Sex-related partitioning was required for red blood cells, (RBC, RBC-O), hemoglobin (HGB, HGB-O), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), reticulocyte production index (RPI), and side scattered light intensity of the red blood cell population in the RET channel (RBC-Z). Partitioning for age was not warranted. Body mass index (BMI) and smoking had moderate influence on a minority of the parameters. We provide reference intervals for all Sysmex XN analyzer routine, CPD and functional parameters, using a direct approach in a large cohort in the Netherlands
