Lorentz Symmetry and the Internal Structure of the Nucleon
To investigate the internal structure of the nucleon, it is useful to
introduce quantities that do not transform properly under Lorentz symmetry,
such as the four-momentum of the quarks in the nucleon, the amount of the
nucleon spin contributed by quark spin, etc. In this paper, we discuss to what
extent these quantities do provide Lorentz-invariant descriptions of the
nucleon structure.Comment: 6 pages, no figur
Effective range expansion in various scenarios of EFT(\notpi)
Using rigorous solutions, we compare the ERE parameters obtained in three
different scenarios of EFT(\notpi) in nonperturbative regime. A scenario with
unconventional power counting (like KSW) is shown to be disfavored by the PSA
data, while the one with elaborate prescription of renormalization but keeping
conventional power counting intact seems more promising.Comment: 6 pages, 3 tables, no figure, revtex4-1, minor revisions, to appear

Leading Chiral Contributions to the Spin Structure of the Proton
The leading chiral contributions to the quark and gluon components of the
proton spin are calculated using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory.
Similar calculations are done for the moments of the generalized parton
distributions relevant to the quark and gluon angular momentum densities. These
results provide useful insight about the role of pions in the spin structure of
the nucleon, and can serve as a guidance for extrapolating lattice QCD
calculations at large quark masses to the chiral limit.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; a typo in Ref. 7 correcte
Heisenberg-picture approach to the exact quantum motion of a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator
In the Heisenberg picture, the generalized invariant and exact quantum
motions are found for a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator. We find the
eigenstate and the coherent state of the invariant and show that the
dispersions of these quantum states do not depend on the external force. Our
formalism is applied to several interesting cases.Comment: 15 pages, two eps files, to appear in Phys. Rev. A 53 (6) (1996
A Contour Integral Representation for the Dual Five-Point Function and a Symmetry of the Genus Four Surface in R6
The invention of the "dual resonance model" N-point functions BN motivated
the development of current string theory. The simplest of these models, the
four-point function B4, is the classical Euler Beta function. Many standard
methods of complex analysis in a single variable have been applied to elucidate
the properties of the Euler Beta function, leading, for example, to analytic
continuation formulas such as the contour-integral representation obtained by
Pochhammer in 1890. Here we explore the geometry underlying the dual five-point
function B5, the simplest generalization of the Euler Beta function. Analyzing
the B5 integrand leads to a polyhedral structure for the five-crosscap surface,
embedded in RP5, that has 12 pentagonal faces and a symmetry group of order 120
in PGL(6). We find a Pochhammer-like representation for B5 that is a contour
integral along a surface of genus five. The symmetric embedding of the
five-crosscap surface in RP5 is doubly covered by a symmetric embedding of the
surface of genus four in R6 that has a polyhedral structure with 24 pentagonal
faces and a symmetry group of order 240 in O(6). The methods appear
generalizable to all N, and the resulting structures seem to be related to
associahedra in arbitrary dimensions.Comment: 43 pages and 44 figure
A model of driven and decaying magnetic turbulence in a cylinder
Using mean-field theory, we compute the evolution of the magnetic field in a
cylinder with outer perfectly conducting boundaries, an imposed axial magnetic
and electric field. The thus injected magnetic helicity in the system can be
redistributed by magnetic helicity fluxes down the gradient of the local
current helicity of the small-scale magnetic field. A weak reversal of the
axial magnetic field is found to be a consequence of the magnetic helicity flux
in the system. Such fluxes are known to alleviate so-called catastrophic
quenching of the {\alpha}-effect in astrophysical applications. Application to
the reversed field pinch in plasma confinement devices is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Electrical Control of Dynamic Spin Splitting Induced by Exchange Interaction as Revealed by Time Resolved Kerr Rotation in a Degenerate Spin-Polarized Electron Gas
The manipulation of spin degree of freedom have been demonstrated in spin
polarized electron plasma in a heterostructure by using exchange-interaction
induced dynamic spin splitting rather than the Rashba and Dresselhaus types, as
revealed by time resolved Kerr rotation. The measured spin splitting increases
from 0.256meV to 0.559meV as the bias varies from -0.3V to -0.6V. Both the sign
switch of Kerr signal and the phase reversal of Larmor precessions have been
observed with biases, which all fit into the framework of
exchange-interaction-induced spin splitting. The electrical control of it may
provide a new effective scheme for manipulating spin-selected transport in spin
FET-like devices.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures ; added some discussion
