Modeling river delta formation
A new model to simulate the time evolution of river delta formation process
is presented. It is based on the continuity equation for water and sediment
flow and a phenomenological sedimentation/ erosion law. Different delta types
are reproduced using different parameters and erosion rules. The structures of
the calculated patterns are analyzed in space and time and compared with real
data patterns. Furthermore our model is capable to simulate the rich dynamics
related to the switching of the mouth of the river delta. The simulation
results are then compared with geological records for the Mississippi river

A scale-dependent cosmology for the inhomogeneous Universe
A scale-dependent cosmology is proposed in which the Robertson-Walker metric
and the Einstein equation are modified in such a way that , and
the age of the Universe all become scale-dependent. Its implications on the
observational cosmology are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, in RevTex. To be appeared in TAUP '9
Dark Matters in Axino Gravitino Cosmology
It is suggested that the axino mass in the 1 MeV region and gravitino mass in
the eV region can provide an axino lifetime of order of the time of photon
decoupling. In this case, some undecayed axinos act like cold dark matters and
some axino decay products (gravitinos and hot axions) act like hot dark matters
at the time of galaxy formation.Comment: 9 pages, Late

Acute effects of elevated NEFA on vascular function: a comparison of SFA and MUFA
There is emerging evidence to show that high levels of NEFA contribute to endothelial dysfunction and impaired insulin sensitivity. However,
the impact of NEFA composition remains unclear. A total of ten healthy men consumed test drinks containing 50 g of palm stearin
(rich in SFA) or high-oleic sunflower oil (rich in MUFA) on separate occasions; a third day included no fat as a control. The fats were emulsified
into chocolate drinks and given as a bolus (approximately 10 g fat) at baseline followed by smaller amounts (approximately 3 g fat)
every 30 min throughout the 6 h study day. An intravenous heparin infusion was initiated 2 h after the bolus, which resulted in a three- to
fourfold increase in circulating NEFA level from baseline. Mean arterial stiffness as measured by digital volume pulse was higher during the
consumption of SFA (P,0·001) but not MUFA (P¼0·089) compared with the control. Overall insulin and gastric inhibitory peptide
response was greater during the consumption of both fats compared with the control (P,0·001); there was a second insulin peak in
response to MUFA unlike SFA. Consumption of SFA resulted in higher levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sI-CAM) at
330 min than that of MUFA or control (P#0·048). There was no effect of the test drinks on glucose, total nitrite, plasminogen activator
inhibitor-1 or endothelin-1 concentrations. The present study indicates a potential negative impact of elevated NEFA derived from the consumption
of SFA on arterial stiffness and sI-CAM levels. More studies are needed to fully investigate the impact of NEFA composition on risk
factors for CVD

What can polysemy tell us about theories of explanation?
Philosophical accounts of scientific explanation are broadly divided into ontic and epistemic views. This paper explores the idea that the lexical ambiguity of the verb to explain and its nominalisation supports an ontic conception of explanation. I analyse one argument which challenges this strategy by criticising the claim that explanatory talk is lexically ambiguous, 375–394, 2012). I propose that the linguistic mechanism of transfer of meaning, 109–132, 1995) provides a better account of the lexical alternations that figure in the systematic polysemy of explanatory talk, and evaluate the implications of this proposal for the debate between ontic and epistemic conceptions of scientific explanation

The Beagle landing site in Isidis Planitia
The Mars probe Beagle 2 will land in Isidis Planitia. This region satisfies the engineering constraints and has evidence for particularly volatile-rich subsoil. Isidis provides a suitable place for the lander to search for H2O and organic matter
