Adherence of Prime-Time Television Advertising Disclosures to the “Clear and Conspicuous Standard: 1990 vs. 2002

    Get PDF
In 1990, one-fourth of all national television commercials contained disclosures, yet none of the disclosures adhered to all of the Federal Trade Commission\u27s clear and conspicuous standard (CCS). As a result of marketplace changes and a 2001 Federal Trade Commission and National Advertising Division joint workshop, the authors anticipate an increase in the number of disclosures and greater adherence to the CCS. The authors find a significant increase in disclosure incidence; however, adherence declines or remains unchanged for most individual guidelines. Finally, the authors provide public policy implications and offer suggestions to increase adherence to the CCS

Titanium and advanced composite structures for a supersonic cruise arrow wing configuration

Structural design studies were made, based on current technology and on an estimate of technology to be available in the mid 1980's, to assess the relative merits of structural concepts and materials for an advanced arrow wing configuration cruising at Mach 2.7. Preliminary studies were made to insure compliance of the configuration with general design criteria, integrate the propulsion system with the airframe, and define an efficient structural arrangement. Material and concept selection, detailed structural analysis, structural design and airplane mass analysis were completed based on current technology. Based on estimated future technology, structural sizing for strength and a preliminary assessment of the flutter of a strength designed composite structure were completed. An advanced computerized structural design system was used, in conjunction with a relatively complex finite element model, for detailed analysis and sizing of structural members

Active controls technology to maximize structural efficiency

    Get PDF
The implication of the dependence on active controls technology during the design phase of transport structures is considered. Critical loading conditions are discussed along with probable ways of alleviating these loads. Why fatigue requirements may be critical and can only be partially alleviated is explained. The significance of certain flutter suppression system criteria is examined

A method for the analysis of the benefits and costs for aeronautical research and technology

    Get PDF
A relatively simple, consistent, and reasonable methodology for performing cost-benefit analyses which can be used to guide, justify, and explain investments in aeronautical research and technology is presented. The elements of this methodology (labeled ABC-ART for the Analysis of the Benefits and Costs of Aeronautical Research and Technology) include estimation of aircraft markets; manufacturer costs and return on investment versus aircraft price; airline costs and return on investment versus aircraft price and passenger yield; and potential system benefits--fuel savings, cost savings, and noise reduction. The application of this methodology is explained using the introduction of an advanced turboprop powered transport aircraft in the medium range market in 1978 as an example

HORIZONTAL DIFFERENTIATION WITH DIFFERENTIAL INPUT COSTS: RETAIL PRICES FOR MILK BY FAT CONTENT

    Get PDF
Markets for horizontally differentiated products with differential costs are important and have unique features. This paper studies sellers' pricing strategy and market equilibrium in these markets under various competition scenarios in the context of retail milk markets. An empirical study is also conducted to examine the effects of cost factors on retail milk prices and to characterize competition in markets in four California cities.Marketing,
