Stable Direct Adaptive Control of Linear Infinite-dimensional Systems Using a Command Generator Tracker Approach
A command generator tracker approach to model following contol of linear distributed parameter systems (DPS) whose dynamics are described on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces is presented. This method generates finite dimensional controllers capable of exponentially stable tracking of the reference trajectories when certain ideal trajectories are known to exist for the open loop DPS; we present conditions for the existence of these ideal trajectories. An adaptive version of this type of controller is also presented and shown to achieve (in some cases, asymptotically) stable finite dimensional control of the infinite dimensional DPS
The Production of HI in Photodissociation Regions and A Comparison with CO(1-0) Emission
The gas at the surfaces of molecular clouds in galaxies is heated and
dissociated by photons from young stars both near and far. HI resulting from
the dissociation of molecular hydrogen H2 emits hyperfine line emission at 21
cm, and warmed CO emits dipole rotational lines such as the 2.6 mm line of
CO(1-0). We use previously developed models for photodissociation regions
(PDRs) to compute the intensities of these HI and CO(1-0) lines as a function
of the total volume density n in the cloud and the far ultraviolet flux G0
incident upon it and present the results in units familiar to observers. The
intensities of these two lines behave differently with changing physical
conditions in the PDR, and, taken together, the two lines can provide a
ground-based radio astronomy diagnostic for determining n and G0 separately in
distant molecular clouds. This diagnostic is particularly useful in the range
Gzero <~ 100, 10 cm^{-3} <~ n <~ 10^5 cm^{-3}, which applies to a large
fraction of the volume of the interstellar medium in galaxies. If the molecular
cloud is located near discrete sources of far-UV (FUV) emission, the
PDR-generated HI and CO(1-0) emission on the cloud surface can be more easily
identified, appearing as layered ``blankets'' or ``blisters'' on the side of
the cloud nearest to the FUV source. As an illustration, we consider the
Galactic object G216 -2.5, i.e. ``Maddalena's Cloud'', which has been
previously identified as a large PDR in the Galaxy. We determine that this
cloud has n ~ 200 cm^{-3}, G0 ~ 0.8, consistent with other data.Comment: 13 Pages, 3 Figures. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical

MSFC Doppler Lidar Science experiments and operations plans for 1981 airborne test flight
The flight experiment and operations plans for the Doppler Lidar System (DLS) are provided. Application of DLS to the study of severe storms and local weather penomena is addressed. Test plans involve 66 hours of flight time. Plans also include ground based severe storm and local weather data acquisition
Unified constitutive material models for nonlinear finite-element structural analysis
Unified constitutive material models were developed for structural analyses of aircraft gas turbine engine components with particular application to isotropic materials used for high-pressure stage turbine blades and vanes. Forms or combinations of models independently proposed by Bodner and Walker were considered. These theories combine time-dependent and time-independent aspects of inelasticity into a continuous spectrum of behavior. This is in sharp contrast to previous classical approaches that partition inelastic strain into uncoupled plastic and creep components. Predicted stress-strain responses from these models were evaluated against monotonic and cyclic test results for uniaxial specimens of two cast nickel-base alloys, B1900+Hf and Rene' 80. Previously obtained tension-torsion test results for Hastelloy X alloy were used to evaluate multiaxial stress-strain cycle predictions. The unified models, as well as appropriate algorithms for integrating the constitutive equations, were implemented in finite-element computer codes

Fundamental ignition study for material fire safety improvement, part 2
The autoignition behavior of polymeric compositions in oxidizing media was investigated as well as the nature and relative concentration of the volatiles produced during oxidative decomposition culminating in combustion. The materials investigated were Teflon, Fluorel KF-2140 raw gum and its compounded versions Refset and Ladicote, 45B3 intumenscent paint, and Ames isocyanurate foam. The majority of the tests were conducted using a stagnation burner arrangement which provided a laminar gas flow and allowed the sample block and gas temperatures to be varied independently. The oxidizing atmospheres were essentially air and oxygen, although in the case of the Fluorel family of materials, due to partial blockage of the gas inlet system, some tests were performed unintentionally in enriched air (not oxygen). The 45B3 paint was not amenable to sampling in a dynamic system, due to its highly intumescent nature. Consequently, selected experiments were conducted using a sealed tube technique both in air and oxygen media

Cross Linking and Degradation Mechanisms in Model Sealant Candidates
Model compounds were investigated as to which type of heterocyclic ring is the most advantageous for curing sealants based on perfluoroalkylether chains. The relative thermal, thermal oxidative, hydrolytic, and fuel stability of potential crosslinks were determined. Specifically substituted materials were synthesized and evaluation of their stabilities in air, inert atmosphere, water, and Jet-A fuel at 235 and 325 C was made. Three heterocyclic ring systems were considered, namely, triazine, 1,2,4- and 1,3,4-oxadiazoles
