Free-flight measurements of dynamic stability derivatives of a blunted 120 deg cone in helium at Mach number 15.4
Free flight measurements of dynamic stability derivatives of blunted 120 deg cone in helium compared to unmodified Newtonian theory prediction
Two-dimensional oscillating airfoil test apparatus
A two dimensional oscillating airfoil test apparatus is presented as a method of measuring unsteady aerodynamic forces on an airfoil or rotor blade section. The oscillating airfoil test rig, which is being built for use in an 11 X 11-foot transonic wind tunnel (speed range M = 0.4 - 1.4), will allow determination of unsteady loadings and detailed pressure distributions on representative airfoil sections undergoing simulated pitching and flapping motions. The design details of the motion generating system and supporting structure are presented. This apparatus is now in the construction phase
Visualizing the geometry of state space in plane Couette flow
Motivated by recent experimental and numerical studies of coherent structures
in wall-bounded shear flows, we initiate a systematic exploration of the
hierarchy of unstable invariant solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. We
construct a dynamical, 10^5-dimensional state-space representation of plane
Couette flow at Re = 400 in a small, periodic cell and offer a new method of
visualizing invariant manifolds embedded in such high dimensions. We compute a
new equilibrium solution of plane Couette flow and the leading eigenvalues and
eigenfunctions of known equilibria at this Reynolds number and cell size. What
emerges from global continuations of their unstable manifolds is a surprisingly
elegant dynamical-systems visualization of moderate-Reynolds turbulence. The
invariant manifolds tessellate the region of state space explored by
transiently turbulent dynamics with a rigid web of continuous and discrete
symmetry-induced heteroclinic connections.Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures submitted to Journal of Fluid Mechanic
On Dwarf Galaxies as the Source of Intracluster Gas
Recent observational evidence for steep dwarf galaxy luminosity functions in
several rich clusters has led to speculation that their precursors may be the
source of the majority of gas and metals inferred from intracluster medium
(ICM) x-ray observations. Their deposition into the ICM is presumed to occur
through early supernovae-driven winds, the resultant systems reflecting the
photometric and chemical properties of the low luminosity dwarf spheroidals and
ellipticals we observe locally. We consider this scenario, utilising a
self-consistent model for spheroidal photo-chemical evolution and gas ejection
via galactic superwinds. Insisting that post-wind dwarfs obey the observed
colour-luminosity-metallicity relations, we conclude that the bulk of the ICM
gas and metals does not originate within their precursors.Comment: 43 pages, 8 figures, LaTeX, also available at

Three-nucleon interactions: A frontier in nuclear structure
Three-nucleon interactions are a frontier in understanding and predicting the
structure of strongly-interacting matter in laboratory nuclei and in the
cosmos. We present results and discuss the status of first calculations with
microscopic three-nucleon interactions beyond light nuclei. This coherent
effort is possible due to advances based on effective field theory and
renormalization group methods in nuclear physics.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures, talk at International Symposium on New Facet of

Importance of Baryon-Baryon Coupling in Hypernuclei
The coupling in --hypernuclei and coupling in --hypernuclei produce novel
physics not observed in the conventional, nonstrange sector. Effects of
conversion in H are reviewed.
The role of coupling suppression in the
--hypernuclei due to Pauli blocking is highlighted, and the
implications for the structure of B are explored.
Suppression of conversion in He is hypothesized as the reason that the
matrix element is small. Measurement of H is
proposed to investigate the full interaction. The
implication for analog states is discussed.Comment: 17 pages LATEX, 1 figure uuencoded postscrip
Brayton heat exchanger unit development program (alternate design)
A Brayton Heat Exchanger Unit Alternate Design (BHXU-Alternate) consisting of a recuperator, a heat sink heat exchanger, and a gas ducting system, was designed and fabricated. The design was formulated to provide a high performance unit suitable for use in a long-life Brayton-cycle powerplant. Emphasis was on double containment against external leakage and leakage of the organic coolant into the gas stream. A parametric analysis and design study was performed to establish the optimum component configurations to achieve low weight and size and high reliability, while meeting the requirements of high effectiveness and low pressure drop. Layout studies and detailed mechanical and structural design were performed to obtain a flight-type packaging arrangement, including the close-coupled integration of the BHXU-Alternate with the Brayton Rotating Unit (BRU)
AAT/WFI observations of the Extragalactic H I Cloud HIPASS J1712-64
AAT/WFI optical images of a candidate extragalactic HI cloud, HIPASS
J1712-64, are presented. The g and r-band CCD mosaic camera frames were
processed using a new data pipeline recently installed at the AAO. The
resultant stacked images reach significantly deeper levels than those of
previous published optical imaging of this candidate, providing a detection
limit M_g -7 at a distance of 3Mpc, the inferred distance to HIPASS J1712-64.
However, detailed analysis of the images fails to uncover any stellar
population associated with the HI emission. If this system is a member of the
Local Group then it is pathologically different to other members. Hence, our
observations reinforce earlier suggestions that this HI cloud is most likely
Galactic in origin and not a Local Volume dwarf galaxy.Comment: 8 pages, accepted for publication in PASA (Figures reduced in
