    Fabrication and evaluation of low fiber content alumina fiber/aluminum composites

    The mechanical fabrication of low volume percent fiber, polycrystalline alumina fiber reinforced aluminum composites was accomplished. Wire preform material was prepared by liquid-metal infiltration of alumina fiber bundles. The wires were subsequently encapsulated with aluminum foil and fabricated into bulk composite material by hot-drawing. Extensive mechanical, thermal and chemical testing was conducted on preform and bulk material to develop a process and material data base. In addition, a preliminary investigation of mechanical forming of bulk alumina fiber reinforced aluminum composite material was conducted

    Outer jet X-ray and radio emission in R Aquarii: 1999.8 to 2004.0

    Chandra and VLA observations of the symbiotic star R Aqr in 2004 reveal significant changes over the three to four year interval between these observations and previous observations taken with the VLA in 1999 and with Chandra in 2000. This paper reports on the evolution of the outer thermal X-ray lobe-jets and radio jets. The emission from the outer X-ray lobe-jets lies farther away from the central binary than the outer radio jets, and comes from material interpreted as being shock heated to ~10^6 K, a likely result of collision between high speed material ejected from the central binary and regions of enhanced gas density. Between 2000 and 2004, the Northeast (NE) outer X-ray lobe-jet moved out away from the central binary, with an apparent projected motion of ~580 km s^-1. The Southwest (SW) outer X-ray lobe-jet almost disappeared between 2000 and 2004, presumably due to adiabatic expansion and cooling. The NE radio bright spot also moved away from the central binary between 2000 and 2004, but with a smaller apparent velocity than of the NE X-ray bright spot. The SW outer lobe-jet was not detected in the radio in either 1999 or 2004. The density and mass of the X-ray emitting material is estimated.     Integer Vector Addition Systems with States

    This paper studies reachability, coverability and inclusion problems for Integer Vector Addition Systems with States (ZVASS) and extensions and restrictions thereof. A ZVASS comprises a finite-state controller with a finite number of counters ranging over the integers. Although it is folklore that reachability in ZVASS is NP-complete, it turns out that despite their naturalness, from a complexity point of view this class has received little attention in the literature. We fill this gap by providing an in-depth analysis of the computational complexity of the aforementioned decision problems. Most interestingly, it turns out that while the addition of reset operations to ordinary VASS leads to undecidability and Ackermann-hardness of reachability and coverability, respectively, they can be added to ZVASS while retaining NP-completness of both coverability and reachability.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure

    A pilot study to evaluate the effects of C1 esterase inhibitor on the toxicity of high-dose interleukin 2.

    In a pilot study six patients received 4 days' treatment with interleukin 2 (IL-2) [cumulative dose (CD) 264 +/- 26 x 10(6) IU m-2] and C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) (loading dose 2,000 U, followed by 500-1,000 U twice daily). Toxicity was compared with that in patients given 4 days' treatment with standard (CD 66 +/- 12 x 10(6) IU m-2) or escalating-dose (CD 99 +/- 8 x 10(6) IU m-2) IL-2. IL-2-induced hypotension was equivalent and complement activation was less after IL-2 + C1-INH (C3a = 10.5 +/- 3.2 nmol l-1) than following standard (14.1 +/- 8.4 nmol l-1) or escalating-dose (18.3 +/- 2.9 nmol l-1) IL-2. This study demonstrates that C1-INH administration during IL-2 treatment is safe and warrants further study to evaluate its ability to ameliorate IL-2-induced toxicity

    On Languages Accepted by P/T Systems Composed of joins

    Recently, some studies linked the computational power of abstract computing systems based on multiset rewriting to models of Petri nets and the computation power of these nets to their topology. In turn, the computational power of these abstract computing devices can be understood by just looking at their topology, that is, information flow. Here we continue this line of research introducing J languages and proving that they can be accepted by place/transition systems whose underlying net is composed only of joins. Moreover, we investigate how J languages relate to other families of formal languages. In particular, we show that every J language can be accepted by a log n space-bounded non-deterministic Turing machine with a one-way read-only input. We also show that every J language has a semilinear Parikh map and that J languages and context-free languages (CFLs) are incomparable

    An Analytical and Numerical Study of Optimal Channel Networks

    We analyze the Optimal Channel Network model for river networks using both analytical and numerical approaches. This is a lattice model in which a functional describing the dissipated energy is introduced and minimized in order to find the optimal configurations. The fractal character of river networks is reflected in the power law behaviour of various quantities characterising the morphology of the basin. In the context of a finite size scaling Ansatz, the exponents describing the power law behaviour are calculated exactly and show mean field behaviour, except for two limiting values of a parameter characterizing the dissipated energy, for which the system belongs to different universality classes. Two modified versions of the model, incorporating quenched disorder are considered: the first simulates heterogeneities in the local properties of the soil, the second considers the effects of a non-uniform rainfall. In the region of mean field behaviour, the model is shown to be robust to both kinds of perturbations. In the two limiting cases the random rainfall is still irrelevant, whereas the heterogeneity in the soil properties leads to new universality classes. Results of a numerical analysis of the model are reported that confirm and complement the theoretical analysis of the global minimum. The statistics of the local minima are found to more strongly resemble observational data on real rivers.Comment: 27 pages, ps-file, 11 Postscript figure

    Condición de un pastizal del este del Chaco

    The aim of this study was to assess the condition of a grassland of Eastern Chaco. The work was done on a livestock ranch in Makalle (Chaco). Vegetation is characterized by herbaceous plants dominated by warm season grasses. Proportion of preferred, intermediate and undesirable species was determined, based on their forage attributes. Quantity of annuals and weed species, percent bare soil, vigour of best species and dry matter yield (Kg DM/ha) were also determined. The grassland had 40.4% preferred species with good vigour, low percentage of weeds (2%) and low bare soil (2%). Dry matter yield was 1639.1 kg DM/ha (seasonal mean). Condition was rated good to excellent. No deterioration was detected.El objetivo del presente trabajo fue establecer la condición de un pastizal del este de la provincia del Chaco. El trabajo se realizó en un establecimiento ganadero ubicado en la Localidad de Makallé. Se caracteriza por la presencia de un estrato herbáceo con predominio de gramíneas, de ciclo de crecimiento primavero-estival. Se determinó la proporción de especies clasificadas como preferidas, intermedias y/o indeseables, según sus características forrajeras; la cantidad de plantas anuales o malezas; la proporción de suelo desnudo; el vigor de las mejores especies y la producción estacional de materia seca. Teniendo en cuenta que el pastizal evaluado está integrado por un 40,4% de forrajeras preferidas que tuvieron un vigor alto; la cantidad de malezas fue baja (2%) al igual que la proporción de suelo desnudo sin cobertura vegetal (2%) y la producción forrajera fue de 1.639,1 kg/ha (promedio estacional). Se puede inferir en que la condición del pastizal es buena a excelente. No hay indicios en la vegetación y la producción del pastizal que manifiesten el comienzo de su deterioro

    The large-scale ionised outflow of CH Cygni

    HST and ground-based [OII} and [NII] images obtained from 1996 to 1999 reveal the existence of a ionised optical nebula around the symbiotic binary CH Cyg extending out to 5000 A.U. from the central stars. The observed velocity range of the nebula, derived from long-slit echelle spectra, is of 130 km/s. In spite of its complex appearence, the velocity data show that the basic morphology of the inner regions of the optical nebula is that of a bipolar (or conical) outflow extending nearly along the plane of the sky out to some 2000 A.U. from the centre. Even if the extension of this bipolar outflow and its position angle are consistent with those of the radio jet produced in 1984 (extrapolated to the time of our optical imagery), no obvious counterpart is visible of the original, dense radio bullets ejected by the system. We speculate that the optical bipolar outflow might be the remannt of the interaction of the bullets with a relatively dense circumstellar medium.Comment: 8 text pages + 3 figures (jpeg).     Unified View of Scaling Laws for River Networks

    Scaling laws that describe the structure of river networks are shown to follow from three simple assumptions. These assumptions are: (1) river networks are structurally self-similar, (2) single channels are self-affine, and (3) overland flow into channels occurs over a characteristic distance (drainage density is uniform). We obtain a complete set of scaling relations connecting the exponents of these scaling laws and find that only two of these exponents are independent. We further demonstrate that the two predominant descriptions of network structure (Tokunaga's law and Horton's laws) are equivalent in the case of landscapes with uniform drainage density.
