Analytic Torsion on Hyperbolic Manifolds and the Semiclassical Approximation for Chern-Simons Theory
The invariant integration method for Chern-Simons theory for gauge group
SU(2) and manifold \Gamma\H^3 is verified in the semiclassical approximation.
The semiclassical limit for the partition function associated with a connected
sum of hyperbolic 3-manifolds is presented. We discuss briefly L^2 - analytical
and topological torsions of a manifold with boundary.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX fil
Modeling the spectrum of gravitational waves in the primordial Universe
Recent observations from type Ia Supernovae and from cosmic microwave
background (CMB) anisotropies have revealed that most of the matter of the
Universe interacts in a repulsive manner, composing the so-called dark energy
constituent of the Universe. The analysis of cosmic gravitational waves (GW)
represents, besides the CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies, an
additional approach in the determination of parameters that may constrain the
dark energy models and their consistence. In recent work, a generalized
Chaplygin gas model was considered in a flat universe and the corresponding
spectrum of gravitational waves was obtained. The present work adds a massless
gas component to that model and the new spectrum is compared to the previous
one. The Chaplygin gas is also used to simulate a -CDM model by means
of a particular combination of parameters so that the Chaplygin gas and the
-CDM models can be easily distinguished in the theoretical scenarios
here established. The lack of direct observational data is partialy solved when
the signature of the GW on the CMB spectra is determined.Comment: Proc. of the Conference on Magnetic Fields in the Universe: from

Qualitative analysis of a scalar-tensor theory with exponential potential
A qualitative analysis of a scalar-tensor cosmological model, with an
exponential potential for the scalar field, is performed. The phase diagram for
the flat case is constructed. It is shown that solutions with an initial and
final inflationary behaviour appear. The conditions for which the scenario
favored by supernova type Ia observations becomes an attractor in the space of
the solutions are established.Comment: Latex file, 9 pages, 1 figur
Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health of Ilhas Selvagens, Portugal
In September 2015, National Geographic's Pristine Seas project, in conjunction with the Instituto Universitário-Portugal, The Waitt Institute, the University of Western Australia, and partners conducted a comprehensive assessment of the rarely surveyed Ilhas Selvagens to explore the marine environment, especially the poorly understood deep sea and open ocean areas, and quantify the biodiversity of the nearshore marine environment
The anisotropic XY model on the inhomogeneous periodic chain
The static and dynamic properties of the anisotropic XY-model on
the inhomogeneous periodic chain, composed of cells with different
exchange interactions and magnetic moments, in a transverse field are
determined exactly at arbitrary temperatures. The properties are obtained by
introducing the Jordan-Wigner fermionization and by reducing the problem to a
diagonalization of a finite matrix of order. The quantum transitions are
determined exactly by analyzing, as a function of the field, the induced
magnetization 1/n\sum_{m=1}^{n}\mu_{m}\left ( denotes
the cell, the site within the cell, the magnetic moment at site
within the cell) and the spontaneous magnetization which is obtained from the correlations for large spin separations. These results,
which are obtained for infinite chains, correspond to an extension of the ones
obtained by Tong and Zhong(\textit{Physica B} \textbf{304,}91 (2001)). The
dynamic correlations, , and the dynamic
susceptibility, are also obtained at arbitrary
temperatures. Explicit results are presented in the limit T=0, where the
critical behaviour occurs, for the static susceptibility as
a function of the transverse field , and for the frequency dependency of
dynamic susceptibility .Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, 01 table. Revised version (minor corrections)

Drug-induced stress granule formation protects sensory hair cells in mouse cochlear explants during ototoxicity
Stress granules regulate RNA translation during cellular stress, a mechanism that is generally presumed to be protective, since stress granule dysregulation caused by mutation or ageing is associated with neurodegenerative disease. Here, we investigate whether pharmacological manipulation of the stress granule pathway in the auditory organ, the cochlea, affects the survival of sensory hair cells during aminoglycoside ototoxicity, a common cause of acquired hearing loss. We show that hydroxamate (-)-9, a silvestrol analogue that inhibits eIF4A, induces stress granule formation in both an auditory cell line and ex-vivo cochlear cultures and that it prevents ototoxin-induced hair-cell death. In contrast, preventing stress granule formation using the small molecule inhibitor ISRIB increases hair-cell death. Furthermore, we provide the first evidence of stress granule formation in mammalian hair cells in-vivo triggered by aminoglycoside treatment. Our results demonstrate that pharmacological induction of stress granules enhances cell survival in native-tissue, in a clinically-relevant context. This establishes stress granules as a viable therapeutic target not only for hearing loss but also other neurodegenerative diseases.EI:595 - Action on Hearing Loss; 091092/Z/09/Z - Wellcome Trust (Wellcome); MR/N004329/1 - RCUK | Medical Research Council (MRC)Published versio
No-horizon theorem for spacetimes with spacelike G1 isometry groups
We consider four-dimensional spacetimes which obey the
Einstein equations , and admit a global spacelike
isometry group. By means of dimensional reduction and local
analyis on the reduced (2+1) spacetime, we obtain a sufficient condition on
which guarantees that cannot contain apparent
horizons. Given any (3+1) spacetime with spacelike translational isometry, the
no-horizon condition can be readily tested without the need for dimensional
reduction. This provides thus a useful and encompassing apparent horizon test
for -symmetric spacetimes. We argue that this adds further evidence
towards the validity of the hoop conjecture, and signals possible violations of
strong cosmic censorship.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, uses IOP package; published in Class. Quantum Gra
Mercapturate Pathway in the Tubulocentric Perspective of Diabetic Kidney Disease
BACKGROUND: The recent growing evidence that the proximal tubule underlies the
early pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is unveiling novel and
promising perspectives. This pathophysiological concept links tubulointerstitial
oxidative stress, inflammation, hypoxia, and fibrosis with the progression of
DKD. In this new angle for DKD, the prevailing molecular mechanisms on proximal
tubular cells emerge as an innovative opportunity for prevention and management
of DKD as well as to improve diabetic dysmetabolism.
SUMMARY: The mercapturate pathway (MAP) is a classical metabolic detoxification
route for xenobiotics that is emerging as an integrative circuitry detrimental to
resolve tubular inflammation caused by endogenous electrophilic species. Herein
we review why and how it might underlie DKD. Key Messages: MAP is a hallmark of
proximal tubular cell function, and cysteine-S-conjugates might represent targets
for early intervention in DKD. Moreover, the biomonitoring of urinary
mercapturates from metabolic inflammation products might be relevant for the
implementation of preventive/management strategies in DKD.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
